Short man with a great voice

Friday, August 11th, 2006

It is now over 26 years since Mohammed Rafi passed away of a massive heart attack in Bombay on July 31, 1980. He was not yet 55. M Bhaktavatsala does a recap.

This article is taken from Sunday Herald,30-7-06. Slight update editing only – Mohanflora.

Anil Biswas once said that there have been many duplicate Mohammed Rafis but no imitators of Talat Mehamood who was his favorite singer. Then how come all these 25 years Rafi reigns supreme and every succeeding generation seems to instinctively fall in love with his voice? (more…)

Rafi and Yodeling

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

This article is by Pradeep.

In few of the comments that I read on this site, it seems many esp. Kishore Kumar fans are unaware about Rafi Sahab’s yodeling. Kishore Da is popular with this style of singing and probably due to this reason, Rafi Sahab didnt bother to make it his trademark. For a singer of Rafi Sahab’s caliber, yodeling was not much of a deal. (more…)

Remembering Rafi-the person

Monday, August 7th, 2006

The following article by Narender Kusnur is taken from Mid-day. Read what music-director Pyarelal of the great LP duo had to say about the persona of their favorite singer Mohammed Rafi – Mohanflora

When filmmaker Babubhai Mistry asked Laxmikant-Pyarelal to compose music for the low-budget costume drama Parasmani in 1963, the duo began thinking of which singers to choose. In his natural narrative style, Pyarelal recalls: (more…)

Down the memory lanes, Recount your personal experiences

Sunday, August 6th, 2006

This article is written by Nasir @ HF

We cannot do without movies and their ambience. A cinema-hall is a place where all castes and creeds visit with joy and expectation. We all have, I’m sure, different stories to tell. The younger generations need to know how things were different in the bygone era in this connection. We can go down to the 80’s, 70’e, 60’e, 50’s and even 40’s, depending upon our age and perigrinations. (more…)

The mammoth myth about Mohammed Rafi

Friday, August 4th, 2006

I came across this old article,by Rajiv Vijaykar, from a link provided by Anon in the comments page of the Rafi-Kishore saga on this site. As is well known, Rafisaab had gone into a self-imposed shell in the early 1970’s before returning to the music scene big-time in 1977 and ruled again till his passing away in 1980.The article provides a peek into some of the many good/popular songs of the singer during that early seventies period known as the “lean” phase then, but considered CLASSIC today! – Mohanflora

A legend, an inimitable singer and an exemplary human being. Mohd. Rafi was all this and more. July 31 marks his death anniversary and an occasion to go down memeory lane with his memorable songs… (more…)

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

This article is written by Mr. Naveen Zalpuri

Yet another July 31 went by but the popularity of our beloved Rafi Sahib seems to be ever increasing. It amazes me to see kids as young as 10 sing Rafi songs in the music programmes like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs. Zindagi Bar Nahin Bhoolege, (more…)
