Book Review: Mohammed Rafi – My Abba A Mémoire

Sunday, June 1st, 2014

By Mohammed F.Taj, London.

Mohammed Rafi - My Abba A Memoire

Having just finished reading “Mohammed Rafi – My Abba A Mémoire” I must admit I am some what disappointed. What I expected to be anecdotes and insight into the life of the greatest Hindi playback singer in Bollywood history turned out to be far from that. An analogy would be that you buy Chicken burgers from the super market only to find that it only contains 20% chicken. (more…)

The Concert of My Dreams - Part-1

If God would say, ask for one boon. Some would ask for fame, some would like to be a billionaire, some would ask for power, but I will say give a few moments with Rafi Sahab. Perhaps a boon which even God cannot fulfill, “Kyon Ki Jaane Wale Kabhi Loat Kar Nahi Aate, Jaane Walon Kee Yaad Aati Hai“. This is what gives rise to fantasy or fiction and often makes us imagine something away from reality. I often dream of Rafi Sahab living beyond 1980. Based on my imagination I thought of writing a few words which has no reference to any incident in the past. (more…)

Rafi harmonic for first Lover Boy of Indian Cinema:Joy Mukherjee

Sunday, March 23rd, 2014

(A musical tribute to Joy Mukherjee on his 2nd death anniversary)

By Biman Baruah

Banda Parwar Tham Lo Jigar

Mohammed Rafi was the magical voice of actor Joy Mukherjee from LOVE IN SHIMLA (1960) to LOVE IN BOMBAY (2013). In the 100 years of Indian Cinema, it was a very exceptional case that release of film almost after 40 years from its completion. Normally, there is delay in completion of a film, but in this case the delay was in release. In 1971, Joy Mukherjee produced and directed LOVE IN BOMBAY at the huge budget of Rs. 30 to 35 lacs which was completed in 1973-74, but due to some unavoidable reasons he was not able to release the film in two-three attempts. Magic combination of Guru Dutt and Mohammad Rafi

Sunday, January 19th, 2014

By Dr. Souvik Chatterji

Mohd Rafi and Guru Dutt

Eminent director, actor and producer Guru Dutt had a great relationship with legendary singer great Mohammad Rafi Sahab. Just because the relationship lasted for 14 years till the sad death of Guru Dutt in 1964, Rafisahab did not get an opportunity to contribute in more than 100 songs for Guru Dutt. But majority of the songs were masterpieces which adorn the golden music of the 1950s and 1960s. (more…)

Profoundness of Rafi Sahab’s tonal pattern cannot be measured by human competences

Sunday, January 12th, 2014

By Mr. B.Koshy

His voice is incomparable thus every song became significant having asked to select one favorite song by my friend; I thought to do so would be disgraceful to the noble soul.

Therefore, I walked a little farther for those who love him and for those who couldn’t take delight in the nectar of his voice. (more…)

Rafiji’s Voice Range

Tuesday, December 24th, 2013

By Santhanakrishnan Srinivasan
I would like to dedicate this article to the uncrowned king amongst playback singers of our times, Rafi ji, on his 89th birth anniversary.

Mohammad Rafi

Human voice has many qualities.  Of these some such as melodious, pleasing, and gaambhirya are unexplainable and not measurable but can only be experienced.  Some qualities such as range are measurable.  What is range of voice – It is basically the range of musical notes  – that is the difference between  lowest note and the highest note that can be sung by a human voice.  Typically a human voice that can reproduce musical notes would cover in the range of 2 octaves.  An octave has 12 notes,  Shadja, Komal Risabh, Shuddha Rishabh, Komal gandhar, shuddh gandhar, shuddha madhyam and teevra madhyam, Pancham, komal dhaivat, shuddha dhaivat, Komal nishad and shuddha nishad. The note above Shuddha nishad, will be the Shadja of higher octave.  Well trained singers can cover more than two octaves.  (more…)
