What a romantic song! Sigh! One of the greatest romantic duets to have ever been written, ever been composed, ever been sung and ever been enacted.. A dashing Dev Anand imploring a fragile beauty Sadhana not to leave him as his heart is not yet filled with joy. The song Abhi na jao chodkar has several layers. On the surface it seems like a soft romantic song. But look beyond, you will find it is like a precursor to the twists and turns that unfold in the story. No wonder the hero is apprehensive that if the heroine leaves him, then their paths may not meet again. As it happens, the two part, face many tribulations and meet in the end. (more…)

This song has been rated as the best song by the Outlook survey some time back. What makes this song an all time great, perhaps the incredible lyrics written by Sahir or excellent delivery by Rafi or a great composition by Roshan. It is perhaps all the factors. Lets analyze the lyrics written by Sahir. (more…)

Jaane Kahan Gayi Dil Mera Le Gayi” is one of my favourite songs amongst innemerous songs by Rafisaab. I had neither seen this movie (Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi) nor this song on television or anywhere but I was always curious to know who might have leap singing this song on the screen as I was sure the hero Rajkumar was not the one. Recently I saw this song on ‘youtube’ and was surprised to find that it was a lesser known actor Raj Kishore (one of the Kishore Kumar’s musical mandli in Padosan) and that it was a street song. In the vast ocean of golden oldies, there are few pearls in which the tune, orchestration, lyrics and last but not least the singer come together in perfect unison to create sheer magic. The  song ” Johoom ke gaa yun aaj mere dil” from the film Patanga , with the magic combination of Rafi sahib’s golden voice , music by Shankar(Jaikishen) and lyrics by Neeraj is one such pearl. In 1965, 44 years back, actor Feroz Khan publicly declared on-screen, Hum Tum Se Judaa Ho Ke, Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke in the golden voice of Rafi Saheb. But in last 44 years he lived like a King both on-screen and off-screen. On Monday, last 27th April, he died at the age of 69, in his Bangalore farm house after battling with life due to cancer for last one year. (more…)

His Majesty’s Voice

By Mr. A.S.MURTY (asmurty2@rediffmail.com, rafimurty@gmail.com)

Shammi KapoorAmong the many boisterous fast songs sung by Mohd. Rafi Sahab, one song stands out as kingly as any can be. That song is the title song from the film RAAJKUMAR – Jaane Wale Zara Hoshiyar Yahan Ke Hum Hain Raajkumar. The song is picturised on the return of the prince to his kingdom from studies abroad and is so wonderfully picturised that one feels totally immersed in the sequence of events. Shammi Kapoor, the prince is atop a fully bedecked royal elephant, what with an entire band of trumpeteering band and scores of royal guards and aides in attendance. The setting is perfect for a royal entourage – the costumes, the glittering ornaments, the perfect lyrics and the fast paced music. (more…)

APRIL FOOL BANAYA TO UNKO GHUSSA AYA
MERA KIYA QUSUR, ZAMANE KA QUSUR
JISNE DASTUR BANAYA……………………………….

Mohd RafiMohammed Rafi Saheb had lent his golden voice in the above amusing song for romantic hero Biswajeet in Subodh Mukherjee’s APRIL FOOL (1964) under amazing composition by Shankar-Jaikishan in the lyrics of Hasrat Jaipuri and the song was picturised on Biswajeet and Saira Banu in the plot of April Fool. April Fools’ Day is a notable day celebrated in many countries on 1st April as a day marked by the charge of tricks and other practical jokes of varying cleverness on friends, enemies and neighbors or sending them on fools’ tasks with a aim to make uncomfortable the innocent. The history or origins of April fool’s Day custom are complex and a matter of much debate. It is likely a relic of the once common festivities held on the vernal equinox, which began on the 25th March, old New Year’s Day and ended on the 2nd April. However, the present thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX and New Year’s Day was moved from 25th March to 1st April. (more…)

Dil Jo Na Keh Saka

Dil Jo Na Keh Saka by Mohd RafiWhat could have been a better way to express the choked emotions in a love triangle than this song? The movie ‘Bheegi Raat’ (1965) had a number of very melodious songs including this ‘Dil Jo Na Kehesaka’. This is a song that has been marked as an all time Rafian hit. Sang on a rather high note with a suppressed chuckle, it suits the majestic persona of Pradeep Kumar. (more…)

Mohd Rafi and Dev AnandWhile viewing the song, DIN DHAL JAAYE HAAYE… RAAT NA JAA.YE. TU TO NA AAYE TERI..YAAD SATAAYE … from the 1965 film GUIDE, one can easily be filled up by number of thoughts. Even after listening the song NON STOP 3 horus, I still have desire for ONCE MORE…. The beauty of the song lies in the fact of “Dedicated Team Work”. Every member of the team had contributed the best and therefore the product has come out with the tag of Excellent Quality. The quality which lasts for the decades and centuries. (more…)

Mr. Bharatan,

I read your recent article “Pancham Revisited” in Hindustan Times (January 4, 2008). The article starts with the following statements about Pancham:

“He scored for 331 films in 32 years. How does his Kishore Kumar song-tally compare with Asha Bhosle’s? Where Kishore sang 558 songs for him (227 solo, 245 duets), Asha rendered 840 of his compositions (406 solo, 338 duets).” (more…)
