Mein Zindagi Ka Sath Nibhata Chala Gaya
This song review is written by Mr. Anmol Singh.
As individuals we all face a lot of ups and downs in life. Many occasions there are problems where we just don’t know what to do. We gradually learn to live with our problems. We realize that there is no point in thinking over the issues which practically have no solution as such.
MEIN ZINDAGI KA SATH NIBHATA CHALA GAYA
HAR FIKAR KO DHOEIN MEIN UDATA CHALA GAYA
When we experience a worst case situation in our lives, we just let go our problems like a passing moment of life speaking to ourselves “YE WAKHT BHI GUZAR JAAYEGA“.
BARBADIYON KA SOOG MANANA FAZOOL THA
BARBADIYON KA JASHAN MANATA CHALA GAYA
We realize that there is no point in thinking or mourning over the unsolvable issues and problems again and again, better to be relaxed.
JO MIL GAYA USI KO MUQADDAR SAMAJH LIYA
JO KHO GAYA MEIN US KO BHULATA CHALA GAYA
It’s better to accept life the way it comes and shut the doors of the past.
GHAM AUR KHOUSHI MEIN FARQ NA MAHSOOS HO JAHAN
MEIN DIL KO US MAQAM PE LATA CHALA GAYA

As it is said that one should not be too excited during good times and too dishearten during bad times. It’s better to be in a normal state of mind both in good and bad times of life. Perhaps it is not easy for us to be in such a state of mind at all times. But we as individuals do try to work out ways and means to achieve it. Some of us do meditation or some associate themselves with the Almighty.
Now coming to the picturization of song from the film “Hum Dono”, it is indeed Dev Anand’s one of the career best performances. Going through the story line Anand a character played by the Dev Anand faces at lot of up and downs in life. He has no aim in life prior to joining the army which was a sudden decision after facing insult and humiliation from his beloved’s father. Mita a character played by Sadhana is Anand’s beloved.
The most appealing part of the song “Mein Zindage Ka Saath Nibhata” is the casual and relaxed attitude portrayed by Capt Anand. But there are many things behind Capt Anand’s casualness. He is worried about many things. He knows that his mother is a widow staying alone and no one to look after her, since he is her only son away from home. If he is killed in the war then who will look after her there after. What will happen to his beloved Mita.
Later he survives the war successfully, gets promoted to a Major but also gets separated from his senior colleague and best friend Major Verma also played by Dev Anand with the mustache. Having returned home back from the war Major Anand has another challenge to face, to convey Major Verma’s death to his family.
Looking at Major Verma’s mother’s excitement played by Lalita Pawar and his wife’s (played by Nanda) illness Major Anand does not have the guts to convey to truth. As a result Major Anand is misunderstood as Major Verma without mustache by every one. So Major Anand again does not know what to do and moves on with time as the circumstances guide him. These circumstances lead to further misunderstandings between Major Anand and Mita. Finally the misunderstandings come to an end with the return of Major Verma resulting in some conflict and arguments between Major Anand and Major Verma.
The most appealing part of the film “Hum Dono” is the story line which moves as per the reality of life, offering a lot of scope for Sahir Ludhianvi to pen down some of the most unforgettable words of all times. Rafi Sahab does complete justice to Capt Anand’s body language, especially the way he sings line “HAR FIKAR KO DHOEIN MEIN UDATA”.
Apart from this the song “Kabhi Khud Pe, Kabhi Halaat Pe Ronaa Hai” is also truly mind blowing where Major Verma and Capt Anand share their grievances of a glass of wine. Rafi one again provides the perfect emotions and expressions as per the situation for this timeless ghazal written by Sahir.
No wonder well known lyrist Javed Akhtar once commented in his tribute to Rafi Sahab,
“The film industry will always miss Rafi Sahab very much. He could match the body language of an actor so well, that looking at the picturization one will say Aysa Lagta Hai Jaise Dev Anand Gaa Rahaa Hai Ya Dilip Sahab Ga Rahen Hai“.
Finally in the end one has to compliment Music Composer Jaidev for such an incredible composition which provides him a take off to his great career establishing him as a full fledged independent music composer. His magnificent work in “Hum Dono” will be remembered for many-many years to come.

THIS SONG IS A INSPIRATIONAL SONG FOR OVERCOMING ALL THE HURDLES IN LIFE ,IT TEACHES US TO WALK WITH THE LIFE ,RAFI SAHAB IS IMMORTAL THE TRUE LEGEND ,THIS MOVIE IS A MASTERPIECE ,HOW MANY TIMES WE USE TO LISTEN TO THIS SONG THE SAME FEEL I GET THE PLEASURE WHICH CAN’T BE EXPRESSED IN WORDS
I thing the quality of songs by the S.D.Burman/Md.Rafi tag for Dev Ananad Lips are much better than S.D.Burman/Kishore Kumar tag. I also don’t know how can you choose one song from Fafi chacha’s thousand greatsongs. My personal favourites are the 50s and early 60s.
Gautam Banerjee.
Very kind of you to remind Main Zindagi ka saath, I recall my good olds days when I bunked the class to see this movie. Evergreen song still fresh within me. Cinema hall where I saw this movie does not exist BUT song, film, rafi saab, dev saab still lingers in my mind.
Hello Guru Murthy Ji,
Possible people tend to smoke when they are tense or thinking some thing. I remember during my graduation days, one of my collegues use the smoke at least 4 packs a day during examinations because of the pressure and tension.
Plus the use of musical lighter gifted to Capt Anand by Mita would be incomplete without a few puffs of smoke. Here also Capt is tense trying to release it through smoking.
Dearest Rafi Fans,
Thanks for your appreciation and the love shown by you.
yeh song har ek music lover ka favourite song hai;p.m se le-kar, dev saabeb tak.
house no 42 of dev saaheb would be razed……..
dev saahebs landmark 35 year old studio cum bunglow at pali’s zig zag road – is being demolished says the mumbai mirror today – to make way for a grand skyscaper with 24 car sheds, a recording studio and maybe the house of dev saaheb . the building could also house a grand museum it’s felt.
said dev : ” i believe in moving with the times” – its time to spruce it up said the legend. in other words – “mai zindagi ka saath nibattha chala gaya”.
he continued : “This is where stalwarts of bollywood worked in the past. it has valuable film posters and photographs of an era gone by. many scripts are stored here.
it remains to be seen how well “vintage” will be housed in the all-new spectacle of a posh building.
mai zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya – is a “reality” for everyone……

Dear Anmol Singh ji,
A very beautiful article on a beautiful song. Sahir put his unique style in this unforgettable ghazal; he majestically conveyed a philospohical theme in amazingly simple words. Jaidev provided an awesome melodious composition to these words and Rafi Sahab’s rendition is simply out of this world. A very memorable song by these greats! many thanks for writing such a beautiful article on this song.
Thanks and best regards.

Anmol singh ji, very nice article-in fact the lyrics of this great song sums up very great philosophical ideas in such a simple way. Sometimes you really wonder how Sahir, being an atheist , wrote some of the greatest philosophical songs about God, spirituality. Especially the line gham aur khushi mein farq na mehsoos ho jahan, mein dil ko us makam pe lata chala gaye summarises the equanimity concept laid out in many religions.
Taking a cue from another article posted yesterday by Shri Ramesh ji, when Rafi sahab , a divine singer sings such a song, it is bound to become an everlasting melody…thanks for such a beautiful review.
anmol ji,
yeh aapne bahut hi anmol kaam kiya hai gaane ka analysis bhi dilko choo gaya, sahir saheb ke shabad aur jaidev ( is music directorne jitna bhi kaam kiya uski taarif mein shabad nahin nikalate) ki is pyari is composition ke baare mein kya likhoon? kuch samajh nahin aata. i am eagerly awaitng for colour version of this film likely to be release shortly which is carrying outstanding performance by dev saheb, sadhana and nanda.outstanding music too.

anmol Ji your almost anmol
in Media theys mostly used KK with dev Ananad but few years back they asked Dev Ananad ji that you gave great songs with KK and Dev Ji answered I gave great songs with Mohd rafi .
also I agree KK gave great songs to Dev Ji please don’t t compare….
If am not wrong this song is the great Sachin T fav song……..
Anmolji,
Conrats. Hum Dono apart from Muzhe Jeeen Do, Alingan, Reshma Aur Shera, etc. depicts the class of Jaidev. Alas, the industry did not use him more. Hum Dono had wonderful songs, two Rafi solos, one duet, two Bhazans. All were picturised very well. But personally, I was bit disappointed when Dev sings few lines of this song with Cigarette between his lips. I could have digetsed this with some other film but not with a good and realistic film like Hum Dono.
Janab Anmol Singh Sahib,
Bahut Khoob, beautiful narratioin, ghazab ki “Tahreer” aap ne khalamband kiya hai. Excellant song selection. Aapne hamara dil khush kardiya.
Shukriya,
Dr. Khaja Aliuddin
anmol ji
yeh gaana aapke naam ki tarah hi hai. ANMOL.
it has been my mobile caller tune for the last ten years. need i say more about this wonderful song. it is a song that is inspiring, comforting, enlightening and at the same wonderfully philosophical.
you are right, life is full of ups and downs and the person who comes up trumps is someone who doesnt let success go to his head and also doesnt take failure to heart.
i derive great strength from this song and there isnt a day when i dont listen to it at least once. my colleagues and friends know that i hum this song all the time !!!
what makes the songly utterly beautiful is the minimal use of instruments, something typical of Jaidev and most of the songs in Hum Dono.
thanks for the write up anmol ji -you stole my song but i have no regrets about that. it must be many many people’s song.
thanks once again, anmol ji.

Anmol singhji, a great presentation of an iconic song of rafi sahab. this song written in the simplest of language by Sahir, is a song which a common man attaches to. Even today in our regular mehfil of our group, a young lady Shanti reminded her daddy K Sivaram to sing this song and the song defies the generation gap. Thanks for the lovely article.
Anmol saab,
Very well written piece on a wonderful song. We all seek equanimity in our lives: apni zindagi ko us makaam pe lana, jahaan gham aur khushi me fark na mehsoos ho, is the aim of all spiritual pursuits.
Keep writing, sir!
Gan
anmol singh,
aapkaa naam aur aapkaa article dono anmol hai. you have picked up one of my favourite songs. infact all songs of hum dono and all rafi sahab’s songs sung for deva anand are a natural hit.
somehow, rafi sahab, within his innermost self might have liked dev sahab immensely to have acted in his mind and sang all dev sahab’s songs so very perfectly.
hum dono was a runaway hit and the audience took an instant liking to such movies. movies like paying guest too achieved great popularity because of its all round ingredients from the story to actors to md to music and play back singing.
somebody truly said that if the 50’s and 60’s had not given us these memorable songs movies etc. – today we would not have been, writing on this forum – life would have been drab and meaningless.
with all this rafi sahab was the greatest gift to all us music lovers.
anmol singh bhai a great write up – keep writing.
