Some Rare Diamonds Of Rafi Saab–9
(Mohammed Rafi with Khayyam)
Written by Venkatadri Brahmandam (venkat from HF)
Khayyam is a fine music director who created his own niche in HFM. But, he had to be among those highly talented, but not-so-fortunate, music directors. The main reason is, of course, lack of big banner films in his fold!
Khayyam actually started music direction in late forties under the name of “Sharma Ji”. Probably, only after mid-fifties did he revert back to his own original name.
Once in 1961, after Shola Aur Shabnam, Khayyam was seriously contemplating a total change in his style of music hoping that it would lead to greater success. But, in Khayyam’s own words on Vividhbharati, he was once passing by S.D.Burman who then advised him not to change his own natural style at any cost!
With Rafi Saab, whatever small quantity of songs he made were of very good quality. In fact, Khayyam made almost as many non-filmi songs with Rafi Saab as filmi songs. Even his non-fimi songs with Rafi Saab were of great quality and fairly successful too!
Khayyam once narrated the following on Vividhbahrati. During mid-sixties, Rafi Saab’s national and international musical shows/nites used to be a rage. Rafi Saab used to do these shows with very successful music directors of that time and mostly with Shankar Jaikishan. So, Khayyam too approached Rafi Saab once for doing one such show with him. But, Rafi Saaab, after consulting his brother-in-law, had politely told Khayyam something to this effect. “Khayyam Saab, Aap Aur Bhi Zara Stabilize Ho Jaayiye Aur Us Ke Baad Show Karne Se Achha Hoga!”. Khayyam was upset and peeved with Rafi Saab for a long time on account of this.
Today, let us discuss only Khayyam’s filmi songs with Rafi Saab.
Khayyam has made 12 to14 solos, 12 duets and 2 group songs with Rafi Saab, in all.

It contains one of my very favourites from Mohabbat Isko Kahte hain but you rightly said whenever I talk about this song and this movie, people talk about Theheriye Hosh Mein aa Loon.
Thanks again for the song from Barood. I admit that i am hearing it first time and its a pleasure.

Many sincere thanks to all the friends!
Anwar Ji, to the best of my information. the “Akele Mein Woh Ghabrate To Honge” from Film:Biwi (1950) was indeed composed by Sharma Ji (Khayyam)!
Actually, there are many films in olden days which had two MDs for the same film! For instance, Film:Bazar (1949) had two MDs, namely Shyam Sunder and Husnlal Bhagatram. Out of the five Rafi solos in Bazar(1949), three were composed by Shyam Sunder and two by Husnlal Bhagatram!!
Azeez Hindi could have composed some other song in this Biwi (1950), though I am not sure!
Bina, your post above shows your high musical taste and also how perceptive you are to the minute nuances of great songs!!
Yes, I certainly propose to dedicate my next article to the non-filmi songs of Rafi Saab with Khayyam!
Venkat
Dear Venkat jee:
Fantastic choice of MD, especially in light of the fact that he has just won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award along with Shashi Kapoor, though I feel he deserved more than a joint award..his contribution to HFM has always been quality oriented and the handful of songs you have mentioned here is proof enough …the anecdotes you have mentioned are also very interesting, shows us the business side of Rafi Saab..
1. Akele mein woh ghabrate toh honge. – Rafi Saab’s youthful voice and Khaiyyam Saab’s earliest works, this does not have the distinctness of the pahadi flavor that most of his later music had, that made him stand out among others. I believe he composed under the name of Sharmaji for this film..
2. Meri nigaah ne kya – a really beautiful song, and like you said, rarely heard. Thank you for bringing this gem to light..this song is more in Khaiyyam’s traditional style..”ke mujhse zarre ko chamkake aaftaab kiya..”wah Majrooh! Of note, Shashi Kapoor and Khaiyyam combination.
3. Teri aankhon ka rang niraala hai – The dholak is so distinct..he used it a lot..remember Jagjit Kaur’s gori sasural chali? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwljBvnRenM
4. Dekho zara ulfat ka asar – another lovely lesser heard song..!
Also it is interesting to note the few and fine film songs Khaiyyam has recorded with Rafi saab..I think you can write a separate article mentioning their non-filmi songs together, which are most wonderful and extremely popular, especially my favorites being the bhajans tere bharose hey nandlala and paun padun tore shyam.
Also the sweet tunes of:
tum aao rumjhum karti
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhdJkguRiKo
mere geeton ka singar ho tum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA6K5qjThSk&feature=related
Looking forward to your next in the series, Venkat.

Dear Venkatadri Brahmandam ji,
Once again really a brilliant article! You left nothing about this beautiful combo Rafi Sahab and Khayyam.
One question… As per my records, the song “Akele Mein Woh Ghabrate To Honge” is composed by Azeez Hindi and written by Wali Sahab. Could you please confirm that this song is composed by Khayyam, not by Azeez Hindi?
Thanks and best regards.
