Film industry mourns OP Nayyar’s death Press Trust of India Mumbai, January 28, 2007. Bollywood on Sunday mourned the death of music director OP Nayyar describing him as a composer with a distinctive style whose work was always original.

Singers and film personalities from across the spectrum paid rich tributes to Nayyar. Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who never worked with him during her career as a playback singer, said that his “music always carried its own distinct mark“.

His work was different from his contemporaries. One could always identify an OP song. He left his distinct mark on his songs,” Mangeshkar said.

Talking about her personal relations with Nayyar, she said, “I never sang for him, but contrary to what people say, we did not have any quarrel.”

Nayyar died aged 81 of a heart attack at Thane.

As news of his death spread, a pall of gloom descended on the film industry, where Nayyar was regarded as one of the greatest composers of all times even though he had not been in the limelight for close to three decades.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt described Nayyar — who was always seen in public in white attire and a hat — as “an audacious man who was a king in his time“. “Asha Bhosle owes whatever she is to him. The distinct sensuality that was injected into Asha’s singing was the contribution of this extraordinary man,” Bhatt said.

Extensive use of the typical Punjabi rhythm was the main characteristic of Nayyar’s music, Mangeshkar said.

Actress and Censor Board chief Sharmila Tagore, who starred in Kashmir Ki Kali, said, “We will remember him and his contributions will be there forever. His name will be there as long as there is the history of music.” Singer Manna Dey said he was saddened by Nayyar’s death as no one could replace him. Actor Rajesh Khanna said “originality was the symbol” of Nayyar, whom he described as a “charismatic personality“.

TV star and actress Tabassum said, “OP Nayyar’s death is yet another shock for us. We were still to recover from the sorrow at the demise of (noted writer) Kamleshwarji when we heard of the death of kind-hearted Nayyar sahab.”

Actor Shammi Kapoor, who had been the hero in many of Nayyar’s songs said, “He was one of the finest music directors. A man who have India it style and rhythm.” “He was very innovative about voice control. He gave style to Rafi sahab and Ashaji.”

Singer Sonu Nigam said it was a sad moment for the music industry because “we have lost a person of stature and calibre.” “I had some nice moments with him in Sa Re Ga Ma. Besides being a music director he was an idealist,” he added.

What a combination it was, O.P.Nayyar, Rafi and Asha. We also had Shamshad Begum, Geetha Dutt, Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, Mannadey, Talat and Hemant now and then. Vintage stuff, kept us glued to our Radio sets. Though in a way Nayyarji’s songs appeared to be repetitive, but still on close observation you could appreciate the uniqueness of each song. Ragini, Ek Musafir Ek Hasina, Baap Re Baap, Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hoon, Mere Sanam, Humsaya, Miiti Me Sona, Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye, Heera Moti, Kalpana, CID, Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Kashmir Ki Kali, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, CID 909, Kahin Dil Kahin Raat, Dil Aur Mohabbat, Sawan Ki Ghata, Mohabbat Zindagi Hai, Mr. & Mrs. 55, Bahare Phir Bhi Aayegi, Phagun, Kismat – each one a classic. The beauty of Nayyar’s music was that songs never used to be loud and melody was always predominant. But for Nayyarji’s music, Joy Mukherjee and Biswajit perhaps would not have the popular heroes that they were in the sixties. Nayyarji is no more but his songs are always with us.

MUHAMMAD RAFI – LIVE IN CONCERT

Muhammad Rafi was an outstanding singer and one of the most influential playback singers that our part of the world has ever produced, a voice which captured millions of heart’s and whose songs touched all generations.

This is the second time that I am going to comment about the master, who I had the privilege as a child to watch on stage at Bradford’s St George’s Hall, West Yorkshire [UK]. I actually grew up listening to his melodious voice as it soared all around me, whether I was watching a movie or listening to the radio set.

There came a time in my life when I was just ten years old, that I got the chance of watching Muhammad Rafi [The Legend] live on stage and in person performing live to a captivated audience. I had to be forced to go by one of my family friends who had bought 2 tickets for us both, so he literally had to twist my arm into going with him.

However whilst attending the gig I was totally baffled at what I had just experienced on stage, he was right ahead of me… yes Muhammad Rafi Sahab singing live. He kicked off the show with ‘Bari Door Se Aaye Hain’, followed by many of his recent hits and past famous songs such as ‘Hum Bekhudi Main Sanam’, ‘Parda Hai Parda’, ‘Hum To Chale Pardes’, ‘Kiya Hua Tera Vaada’, ‘Sar Par Topi Lal Rumal’, ‘O Duniya Ke Rakhwale’, ‘Punjabi track’, and some other hits.

It’s been a long time now and for a ten year old it’s very hard to remember, but I never ever forgot that memorable night as some of it’s contents were captured onto one of those old movie cameras. Which were later distributed onto vhs tapes in the 80’s and sold for ridiculous high prices to anyone interested in buying a copy.

My dear father bought himself a copy of that recording which I’ve watched innumerable times over the last 25 years or so, but my vhs tape is failing me now in 2007. So I am going to have it’s contents transferred onto dvd format, once I manage to grab myself a good machine… it’s been over 2 months now since my last post in December 2006, but would you believe it – I’m still looking for one.

Once it’s been transferred entirely all onto dvd quality format, I can then distribute it by offering it to any buyers who will be interested in buying themselves a rare recording of the legendary Muhammad Rafi live in concert. Before all that I would like to put some clips on you tube first, just to give you a small little taste of what’s to come in the near future.

You may email me whenever you have the time

    Dear Rafians,
Last month there was a program in Bangalore by the rotary club of North west Bangalore where O.P.Nayyar sahab was honoured with the citation for great contribution in the field of music. Nayyar sahab came all the way from Mumbai and interacted with the great music lovers of Bangalore.
In the press conference he also mentioned that Rafi sahab was the only male singer with whom he had the best rapport except the couple of years where Rafi sahab after SJ recording couldnt reach in time. Till the last date OP sir regretted this decision. Inspite of this 94% of the male playback was with Rafi sahab in any O.P.Nayyar followed by Mahendra Kapoor during the few years. Maybe 2 songs each by Mukesh and KK.
Manna Dey sir had few songs with the legendry MD.

O P Nayyar was a complete music composer. His use of every single music instrument was very unique which could clearly identify the O P Nayyar trademark.

Particularly he gave a face lift to the Sarangi. O P Nayyar was the only music composer to use the Sarangi to represent a romantic or enthusiastic atmosphere. Otherwise most music composer have used the Sarangi for Sad atmosphere. His use of Sitare was also great, which could be heard in almost 80% of his songs. The Harmonium rythmn in the song “O Leke Pahla Pahla Pyar” is remembered till date. The Piano in “Aap Ke Hasine Rukh” is superb. The Xexophone in the song “Yeh Duniya Usee Kee” is also great. This are just few exmaple.

His western and Indian musical co-ordination in many songs was ultimate. On top of it he also use to alter the tempo (speed) of the song in the Asthai and the Antara. For exmaple in the song “Jaiye Aap Kahan Jaayen Ge”, in the Asthai O P Nayyar uses drums where as in the Antara he uses the Tabla.

Apart from Rafi he has used others singers also equally well. The song “Chal Akela” Sung by Mukesh is regarded as one of his best songs. The songs of “Ek Baar Muskura Do” Sung by KK are all great. Similarly he has used Mahendra Kapoor was very well. The song “Tumhara Chahne Waala”, “Lakhon Hai Dil Wale”, “Badal Jaaye Agar Maali”, etc. where all superb.

Long Live O P Nayyar. Though physically he has left the world but his music will remain immortal for ever.

Good comments about a brilliant music director. Sad to learn that he was an abandoned father and husband. But some greats are meant to be diffrent.

He was the first MD to command One Lakh rupees for a movie in 60’s.

I have always loved his songs as they had great punch and left lasting impression. I watched him a number of times on Sa Re Ga Ma and observed him to be very gentle and majestic.

I once listened to a radio programme in 1984 where he played Rafi’s songs for an hour AIR show. He claimed in that he got the best out of Mohd Rafi, no matter what some other musdic directors may claim. He also described Mohd Rafi as a Farishta and absolute gem.

What a pity that such a brilliant music director lived in oblivian without any work for 30 odd years barring Nischay and Ziddi in 90’s and likes of RD Burman ruled the roost.
