For Your Eyes Only
This article is written by Mr. Anmol Singh.
The Eyes which are an integral part of our body are a gift of nature. Eyes can give an expression without words. The portrayal of love, emotions, fear, confusion, mischief, solitude, pain, cruelty, truthfulness, etc can be expressed through eyes. In the golden era of 50s and 60s when love was expressed through sensuality, eyes played an integral part of the characterization of a role. This provided a lot of scope to writers to pen down some of the evergreen writings in the form of songs, dialogs, scripts, etc.
Let’s start with love through eyes. Perhaps the best song which expresses love through eyes is “Teri Aankhon Ki sewa Duniya Mein†from Chirag. These beautiful eyes belong to Asha Parekh. The blinking of eyes has been compared with sunrise and sunset. Rafi gives the perfect expression of love to each and every word of the song. One more for Asha Parekh is the song “Yeh Aakhen Oof Yumaaâ€. Here Rafi Sahab mixes the Masti with Romance to match the stylish Dev Anand. Another gem delivered by Rafi Sahab for Dev is the song from CID, “Ankhoon Hi Ankhoon Mein Ishaara Ho Gayaaâ€. The song from Bharosa, “Yeh Jhuke Jhuke Naina†is again for the beautiful eyes of Asha Parekh portraying honestly. Rafi Sahab sings for Guru Dutt on screen. For Guru Dutt there is yet another classic sung by Rafi Sahab from the film Pyassa, “Ham Aap Ki Aankhon Mein Is Dil Ko Basaa Den Toâ€. The onscreen actress is Mala Sinha the one with big eyes. Who can forget the heart throb of the 60s, Sadhana. Some of songs written on her beautiful eyes include “Chalke Teri Aankhon Se†from Arzoo and “Mere Mehboob…..Phir Wohi Nargee Si Ankhon Ka Sahaara Dede†from Mere Mehmood. Sadhana’s expressions are stunning in both the songs. Rafi Sahab gives playback for Rajendar Kumar in both the songs, where he provides different expressions. The first one is a fun cum romantic song and the latter is a romantic ghazal where the lover has only seen the beautiful eyes during a close encounter. Sadhana’s eyes have been compared by a beautiful flower (Nargees) in the latter.
The song from Aarti “Ab Kya Misal Dun†includes a line “Aankhon Mein Hai Chaman Ki Jawan Raat Ka Suroor†which is great expression of gorgeous eyes of the “Tragedy Queen -Meena Kumariâ€. Her eyes have been compared with a pleasant evening breeze passing through a garden. Rafi Sahab does complete justice to this incredible poetry written by Majrooh with the perfect mood. One unforgettable score “Bahut Hasin Hein Tumhari Aankhen†is truly mind blowing and somewhat different from most the romantic songs. This is the beautiful eyes of actress from south Ragini.
There is another song on the beautiful eyes from the film Naina, “Hum Ko To Jaan Se Pyari Hai Yeh Kaali Aankhenâ€. These are the eyes of Moushumi Chatterjee, which kept hunting the hero (Shashi Kapoor) of the film. Once again Rafi Sahab gives a perfect expression for the hero who is search of these beautiful eyes. From the film “Mere Hum Dum Mere Dost†there is a song “Chalkaye Jaam Aayeeye Apkee Aankhon Ke Naam†picturized on Dharmendra singing for Sharmila Tagore. Rafi Sahab without influence of alcohol drunk gives a perfect expression as per the situation.
Love for eyes can also be expressed through Mischief (Masti / Sharaarat). To start with is a classical based song “Akhiyan Sang Akhiyaanâ€. Then there is a folk song from “Ganga Jamunaâ€; “Nainlad Jaihenâ€. This is for the round and beautiful eyes of Vijyantimala. Rafi Sahab matches Dilip Kumar’s masti the best in this song. On similar lines is the song “Dekha Hai Teri Aankhon Meinâ€. Once again it is for the big round eyes of Vijyantimala picturized on Dharmendra. Of course there is another unforgettable song “Gulabi Aankhen†from the film “The Trainâ€. Picturized on Rajesh Khanna is for the beautiful eyes of Nanda. From the film “Kashmir Ki Kali†there is a song “Ye Chand Sa Roshan Chehra†has a line “Ye Jheel Si Nili Aakhaneâ€. Picturized on Shammi Kapoor, Rafi Sahab has given maximum playback to match his every possible aspect of “Mastiâ€. Here the blue water of the lake has been compared with the beautiful eyes of Sharmila Tagore. Another song from the same film “Isharoon Ishroon Mein Dil Lene Waale†has a line “Nigahon Nigahon Mein Dil Lene Waale†sung by Shammi Kapoor for the “Sharaat Bhari Nazren†of Sharmilla.
Apart from fun and romance, songs have been written and composed to express sorrow & solitude through eyes as well. An all time classic is the song “Tere Bin Soone Nain Hamaare†expresses sorrow and solitude through eyes. Rafi Sahab does complete justice to Ashok Kumar’s expression. Another classic is the song “Apni Aankhon Mein Basakarâ€. The Bahadur Shah Zafar’s famous Ghazal, “Na Kisi Ki Aankh Ka Noor Hun†is a great expression of sorrow of losing every thing in life. The song “Yeh Aanson Mere Dil Ki Zuban Hai†from Hamrahi is another perfect example of expressing sorrow through eyes. The song “Kal Raat Zindagi Se Mulaakat†from Palki is a beautiful sad ghazal. In the film the character played by Rajendra Kumar recalls the beautiful eyes of his beloved (Waheeda Rehman) who is no more, through line “Aankhe Wohi Jin Aankhon Pe Dhokaa Ho Jaam Kaâ€.
The song “Tere Naino Se Mein Deep†from Anuraag doesn’t fall in any of the above categories. The song is a Rafi-Lata duet where Rafi sings for a blind character played by Moushumi Chatterjee. It’s amazing that even such expressionless eyes of a blind person can inspire poets to right. Rafi is once again at his best providing the final touch to Anand Bakshi’s work.
It is very difficult to do a complete justice on this subject. May be English is not the right language to write on this subject. It should be written in the original language -Urdu in which these great songs where written. Of course Rafi Sahab’s excellent pronunciation and clearly of speech in Urdu in every scale of singing, did the true justice to these great songs. Perhaps that is what makes them evergreen (Sadaa Bahaar).

i think the actor you are referring to is Waheeda Rehman’s late husband Kamaljeet.
Am i right?

Ref your quiz in post 40:
I think you are referring to the evergreen melody from Guide picturised on Dev Anand & Waheeda Rehman: Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hain… the lines specifically mentioned by you are from “tere dukh ab mere, mere sukh ab tere, tere ye do naina chand aur sooraj mere…O mere jeevan sathi”
Can there be any other singer who can just loads tons and tons of romance than our ever-smiling , dear Rafi sahab???!!!
ref post 40:
anmol ji, the first song was written by the great majrooh saab. In the second song, this chaudhvin ka chand’s eyes turned out to be fatal for guru dutt in real life. A few years later, another hero would also be disillusioned with her in “reel” life. But before that happened, he would fall in love with her, and promise that he would share her joys and sorrows. He would hold her hand, look into “her eyes” and compare them to chand and aftab. No more clues; let’s see who gets this one first.
DEAR RAFI FANS

Dr. Aliuddin Sahab,
Thanks for the update. The song from “Shola & Shabnam” is one of the best Ghazals rendered by Rafi. Every and every word has been presented to perfection.
Infact within the first few posts I got a feeling perhaps I have missed many classic songs which certainly should have been part of this article.
Ref Post – 37.

Excellent article, anmol ji. Many readers, especially Dr. Aliuddin and Mr. Salim, have provided great examples of rafi saab’s songs meant for “her eyes”. Here’s another in the same genre, written by dada’s “mozru”:
Palkon Ke Peechhe Se Kya Tumne Kah Daalaa
Phir Se To Faramaanaa
nainon ne Sapanon Ki Mehfil Sajaai Hai Tum Bhi Zaroor Aanaa
I was waiting for someone to post one of the most romantic songs in hfm, written by shakeel saab. Here’s the part that has both zulfein and aankhen:
Zulfein Hain Jaise Kaandhe Pe Baadal Jhuke Hue
Aankhen Hain Jaise Maey Ke Pyaale Bhare Hue
Masti Hai Jisme Pyaar Ki Tum, Woh Sharaab Ho
Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho …
Has anyone written more romantic words than these?

anmol ji: beauty lie in the “beholder’s” eyes. madhubala, sharmila and asha parekh along with meena kumari will give a fair run to anyone from todays showbiz.
the advent of the media has opened a huge market for beauty products and judges are often swayed by companies who want to market “big time” in our country. times also has changed anmol ji and we understand that in the fast paced life, even beauty can be skin deep.
as for songs from the golden era, they are olden and golden – without any shelf expiry dates and i believe what a composer said recently: in few years in time, there will be no songs in any of the films.
the ar rehmans and the new breed of composers “must” lose their sleep over this.

Thanks once again.
Anmol Singh.

Hello Binu Ji,
Well judges were not needed in the Golden era, since the beauty was natural. Plus only the best was preferred. In todays era beauty is materialistic with very little of honesty and grace. Analyzing the actresses from last 20 years, my personal option is that only Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla are some of the rare actress from 90s who fall in the category of actresses as that of the Golden era. What expressions we have seen in the golden era, to quiet an extend can see in these two actresses. Plus they never supported vulgarity to make success. They were successfull mainly with there own merit.
In other words honesty and beauty go hand in hand. The world will forget Ashwariyas, Sushmitas, etc. in the next 10 years, but actresses like Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Sadhana, etc will be remembered for years to come.

REGARDS/ A.T.M. SALIM.
Nice article, anmolji. compared to many nationalities, our indian women are beautiful and we had a host of beautiful actresses during the 50’s,60’s & 70’s.and this gave many of our song writers to come up with beautiful songs which are fresh in our memory even today.Of course to give a voice to these songs they had the incomparable Rafi Sahab who gave an indentity to each of the actors he sang for. that was a leasure period when the finer aspects of love and life was appreciated.nowadays what do you see the lovers doing?the girls have become more daring than the boys and both of them are more eager to jump into bed than appreciate the eyes.what a sorry state of affairs!
While driving around today heard LP’s songs with Rafi- “Tere Nain Nashe De Pyale” from Gora Aur Kala, “Shokhiyan Nazar Mein Hain Mastiyan hain chal mein” from Aasra, “Apne nainon ko samjhade yeh baat inhe tu batlade” from MAA aur Mamta among others!
Janab Anmol Singh Sahib, Adab Araz Hai,
Ref: to post 19. I will try my best to translate these words into English. Urdu words had several meanings depending on situation, poets imagination, time and place.
Rasme ulfath – Methodology of love
Custom of love
Tradition of love
Fasana – Storey
Neem baaz Aankhen – Half open tempting eyes
Indulging eyes
I hope this will help you to understand and enjoy the meaning of above written, Ashaar. I will be happy to talk to you on my cell phone, #847-910-1005.

So many love-ly eyes along with the article anmol. I am wondering where all these Miss India, Miss Universal, Miss world – judges were when such beautiful ladies of fifties, sixties and seventies – setting the screens on fire and cash registers ringing along with the unbeatable melodious voice of rafi saaheb…..

siva sahab, ref post 22. sure the word ‘tauba tauba’ has been rendered so excellently well by rafi sahab that it gives added dimension to the same word that the song writer had intended it for. i had not mentioned the same in my comment at post 16 only because it is part of the second stanza which is on “zulfen”. since the article was on ‘aankhen’ i had thought it appropriate to curtail my comment on the first stanza which is all about ‘nazaren’. however, like you say these ‘subtle naunces’ are one area which no other singer could trod on. even after rafi sahab no other singer could ever come up with these ‘special effects’ and that alone makes rafi sahab a unique phenomenon. yes, article after article and comments after comments can be showered on this one feature which was rafi sahab’s forceful domain. almost every song has one or two such extraordinary diction and rendition that it still baffles us all.
Excellent article and good additions by all others.
Mr A.S.Murthy–ref post 16 about the song ” main nigahen tere chhehere se…”. I hope all ardent fans of Rafi sahab would have noticed the line”tauba tauba..tauba tauba..tauba tauba ye nashaa hain ke bataoon kaise.. The third tauba tauba is the ultimate piece in that song–only Rafi sahab can take a song to such great heights. I hope someone would write an article on such subtle nuances in the style that Rafi sahab used to sing that makes them evergreen. As the Sanskrit term goes-Na bhooto na bhavishyati-meaning there was no one in the past and there shall be no one in the future..That is Rafi sahab-the IMMORTAL
the lyricist writes, composer tunes the lyrics and the singer sings and he becomes the face of the song.
the lyricist is very important link along with the singer. op nayyar will give more credit to the lyricist . my vote is to the singer and the lyricist in equal measure and then the composer.
binu nair,
DEAR RAFI FANS
I AM MENTIONING ONE MORE SONG OF RAFI SAHAB FOR THIS CATEGORY :
THE SONG IS ” TERI ZULFEN PARESHAN , TERI AANKHEN PASHEMAN …..” FROM THE FILM ‘ PREET NA JANE REET ‘ STARRING SHAMMI KAPOOR AND MUSIC BY KALYANDJI ANANDJI .

Dr. Khaja Aliuddin Sahab….
Adaab,
I like the way to acknowledge every article with a shaayeri. My Urdu Knowledge is very poor, hence requesting you to translate the following words into english.
rasme ulfath
fasana
Neem baaz
A T M Salim ji….
Thanks for the correction on the song from “Naina”. I haven’t seen the film…only read the film preview some where. But certainly try to see it.
To all the Rafians,
Thanks for the compliments and highlighting the songs which have been missed out, possibly should have been part of the article.
Thanks also for suggesting to write about “Zulfen”. Well “Zulfen” and “Aankhen” are two different aspects altogether. Perhaps it calls for a lot of research in going back in time.
the song – main nigahen tere chehre se hataoon kaise – entire stanza is on the beauty of the ‘eyes’. “shokh nazaren yeh shararat se na baaz aayengi, kabhi roothengi kabhi uth ke palat jayengi, tujh se nibh jayegi main inse nibhaoon kaise – main nigahen tere chehre se hataoon kaise”. the next stanza is ofcourse on the next in line article on “zulf”. true the subject could be better expressed in hindi-urdu than in english but anmol singhji has done a wonderful job giving us a lovely topic.
Then there is another song on the ‘eye-lids’ an extension of expression of the eyes – khuli palak mein jhoota gussa band palak mein pyar, jeena bhi mushkil marna bhi mushkil.
keep writing anmol singhji on similar subjects, for rafi sahab is front runner in extolling the beauty of nature. there is no dearth of subjects.
Excellent article. Rafi has also sung a wonderful patriotic song for the eyes expressions. It is from the film ‘Aankhen’: Us mulk ki sarhad ko koi choo nahin saktaa jis mulk ke sahad ki nigebaan nain aanken’ .
Nazar jab utayee duwa bangayee,
Nazar jab jukayee adaa bangayee,
Nazar jab milayee wafaa bangayee,
Nazar jab churayee kaza bangayee.
DEAR ANMOLJI
IT’S A FINE ARTICLE !

Outstanding article sir! It speaks volumes about your knowledge of music and splendid corelation in putting them in discernible words.
Eagerly waiting for your next article. Possibly on “Zulf”!

Shirish Kulkarni
anmol ji,
classic article,,,,,,just great….
regards;
Narayananji, Aankhen and Zulphe, both are there in the song “Yeh Reshami Zulphe, Yeh Sharbati Aankhen” of Do Raaste. Nice idea that Rafiji’s songs on “Zulphe” can be a topic for discussion.
Very interesting article by Mr. Amnol Singh. There’s a song “Aankhon Aankhon Mein Na Jaane Kya Ishaare Ho Gaye…” missing in the article.
Another Anmol gen from the author . Yes no other bollywood singer can express the romantic beauty of an actress like Rafi sahab. For ur eyes is very apt and the next could be woh haseen zulphe for which Rafi sahab has sung many romantic songs
Nice article mr. Anmol Singh. I remember also a very beautiful song of the king: Teri aankh ka jo ishaara na hoga from the film Nayee Roshni.
Janab Anmol Singh Sahab, Adab Araz Hai,
Congratulations for writing such a romantic topic connected with our “Awaz ke Badshah” Rafi Sahab. Rafi Sahab ki awaz aur unki gayeki , aisa laghtha hai jaise yeh gane rafi saheb ke hi liye likhe gai. Agar aap ijazath den to mai kuch ashaar aap ki nazar kartha hun.
” Dl ne aankhon se kahi aankhon ne dil se kahdi
Baat chal nikli hai, ab dekhen kahan tak pahunche”
” Thi khata unki, magar jab aagai woh samne
Jhuk gai meri hi aankhen, rasme ulfath dikhiye”
“Aankhon me nami si hai, chup chap se baithe hain
nazuk si nigahon me nazuk sa fasana hai”
“Neem baaz ankhon se yeh kiya nigah yar kiya
