Mohammad Rafi – The Real God of Our Time

This article is written by Mr. Vinod Viplav.

Mohd RafiMohammad Rafi transformed thousands of ordinary songs into unforgettable & immortal with the touch of his charismatic voice. After the departure of this great legend, incalculable numbers of new singers came to light and many of his contemporary singers claimed to be best, but all disappeared in the dark. On other hand the magical effect of the songs of Rafi Sahab on the hearts of millions of music lovers is becoming deeper day by day.

It is said that time heals each and every wound, but there is a wound which is still uncured after passing of years, in fact this wound is becoming more and more painful day by day. This wound is nothing but the sad departure of Mohammad Rafi from this mortal world.

For many devotees, the passing of Mohammad Rafi was not less painful than the passing of any dearer family member. There are numerous music lovers who considered the death of Rafi Sahab more tragic than the death of any nearest family member or dearest friend. One can forget the passing of his family member in ten, twenty or thirty years, but the grief of the separation from Mohammad Rafi is becoming deeper and deeper with the passage of time. It is appropriate to say that Mohammad Rafi is the one and the only one icon of India for whom there is unspeakable amount of love and affection in the hearts of millions. There are many music lovers who sink in the ocean of their own tears when Rafi Sahab comes in their memory.

The reason is simple. Actually Mohammad Rafi is not just a singer for Rafi lovers, but he is a true friend in the time of pain and pleasure, he is the greatest guide who shows the right path in the darkness of the life and he is the reliever of pain and distress. Any person, no matter who he is and in which condition he is, can take the shelter of the songs of Rafi Sahab for the comfort of his aggrieved heart. The songs of Mohammad Rafi are like a cool shadow of a giant banyan tree where a sufferer of the “burning sun” of distress, poverty, harness of society, neglect, infidelity, cheating, despair and mental trauma gets much needed comfort. His voice gives great solace and mental peace like the lap of a caring mother, helping hands of an affectionate lover, supporting shoulder of a father and valuable lesson of an experienced teacher.

Mohd Rafi

There are a number of Rafi’s songs, which express the pain of the person who has insulated, snubbed and ill-treated in this selfish society and egocentric world. It is the power of Rafi Sahab to convey the suffering of a person who is yearning for ones love. There are many songs of Rafi Sahab which redefined the Hindi film music. Those singers who claim to be the best or superb are really unable to imitate the voice of Rafi Sahab. Mohammad Rafi has made a number of songs immortal with the power of his impressive voice that comes directly from the deep of the heart.

The importance of Mohammad Rafi, the epitome of music, is not only because of he sung all kinds of thousands of songs and his songs expresses the various aspects of life but also because of he is the greatest symbol of human values, patriotism, secularism and communal harmony in the age of social, ethnic and religious conservations. In the time of moral, social and emotional devaluation, his songs are still motivating us for human relations, morality and humanity. A number of years have passed after the departure of Mohammad Rafi, but the magic of his melodious voice continue to revitalize, energies and refresh millions of his fans and music lovers. This happens not only in India but each and every corner of the world. Mohammad Rafi is continue to live alive in the hearts of thousands of Rafi lovers and will be alive hundreds of forthcoming years.

In the age of short-lived popularity, it is amazing to see that there is a world of thousands of music lovers where after bread, clothing and shelter, voice of Mohammad Rafi is the basic necessity of life without which life is impossible. With the passing of time magic of enchanting and delightful voice of Mohammad Rafi become more and more fascinating.

Mohammad Rafi is not only a great singer and great human being; Mohammad Rafi became a good for music lovers. There is no shortage of such people who worship him in same manner as any human being worship God. Is there is any human being who is worshipped like a god. There are a number of persons like Umesh Makhija of Ahmedabad who have made temples of Rafi Sahab in their small home. I am totally agreed with these Rafi lovers. Why should we not worship Mohammad Rafi like a God? What God is supposed to give us? Nothing more than the peace of the mind. In the some way, songs of Mohammad Rafi provide us not only the peace of the mind but also ease our suffering and pain. There is such magic in his voice that after touching our ears, alleviate our all pain, despair, depression, frustration and mental tauma. There is no medicine in the ultramodern hospitals of this world which can take away the pain of the heart and mind within second. Only one thing can do this charisma and that is the voice of Mohammad Rafi. That is why we worship him.

Mahatma Gandhi is great and will be great but I think he did some mistakes(as I think) but Mohd Rafi never did a mistake in world of music.as I said before Bharat Ratna award for who was great not who is great and will be great like Mahatma Gandhi and mohd Rafi….Bharat Ranta award is so small for Mahatma Gandhi and mohd rafi why great people like Mahatma Gandhi and Mohd rafi should get this small award as I said award should given in the name of Mahatma Gandhi and Mohd Rafi not they should get the award…………………plz and plz don’t speak abount Bharat Ranta award and don’t try that this awrad should go to Mohd Rafi ………when there is India there be a name remmber and he is Mahatma Gandhi and when there is singing be Mohd Rafi that is really gift of God to two great human Mahatma Gandhi and Mohd Rafi all other awards are so small in front of God award…………………………………..

  7. Post No. 40, Sanjay Srivastavaji,

Rightly said. Mohammed Rafi is Mahatma Gandhi of Indian Film Industry. Gandhiji never received any award. Let us remember that Gandhiji has not been given Bharat Ratna, but Gandhiji is still revered. Similarly whether Bharat Ratna is given to Rafiji or not, he will always be revered. I personally feel let us not be obsessed with Bharat Ratna for Rafiji. Of course, if it is awarded, it is very good, in fact, it will add lustre to the award itself. But if you count the people who have received these wards, some undeserving people have got and I feel, that has cost the award some of its importance.

  8. Hussein Sheikh says:

  11. Dear Vinodji, Really its tears wept on the black day of Rafi sahab’s demise. Your article made me and wife to cry! Really impressive you are.In India if anybody wants to glorify the award of “Bharat Ratna”, give to Mohd.Rafi. No award in the world can glorify Him.Vinodji, awards will be glorified if it is given to Greatest singer Rafi Sahab! Rafi sahab is Mahatma Gandhi of Bollywood -He was as great as Mahatma Gandhi was. Mahatma Gandhi did not received/accepted any reward during his lifetime. But he was greatest of all. Similarly, its lowering the heights of Rafi Sahab if his peronality is being tied with any rewards. RAFI sahab was extensive & exclusive in the backdrop of musical melodies! Vinodji, your article is really is really touching and hearfelt. Thanks. Vinod Viplavji, further to my earlier comments I want to inform that just two days back our External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukerjee who is on a visit to China presented the Padma Bhushan award to Chinese Indologist Ji Xianlin. Mukerjee visited the milatary hospital and presented the award personally to Ji. Better China-India relations are welcome. We Rafi fans have no complaints on who gets these high indian recognitions. We only feel sad that even after 28 years justice has not been done in properly recognising the greart contibution of the greatest singer of India- Rafi Saab. You have rightly said that even though they say that all wounds heal with the passage of time, in the case of Rafi fans, the sense of loss is only increasing and the pain in the heart is more because of the govt and society’s apathy. I request the Rafi Foundation and Mr Binu Nair, yourself and othe Rafi Fans to take the lead and make concentrated efforts to see that Rafi Saab is recognised properly. We have been trying for quite some time, but our efforts have not succeeded. It is also because the leading lights of the film industry who all benifited from Rafi Saab have all practically forgotten him, as they easily gave up on him during the last phase of his life.Let us discuss this subject separtely and come up with solutions – very important. Anothe point I want to make is that while your commentary was fantastic and heart touching, please avoid having a bright light behind you -like the door -while vedeo filming. The light should be on the subject and also a bigh photograph of Rafi Saab next to you would have been even more effectiveThis is only my humble suggestion and please continue to give us more of Rafi Saab.the ocean will not quench our thirst.

fantastic topic and writing.the wordings are just like a

I am a fan of rafi saab since 33 years and I feel very
lucky that I could live when he was alive.even his name
in a newspaper is enough for me to be happy by seeing
the name again and again.one porter in alleppy (kerala)
is conducting rafi night every 31st july with his hard
earned money and by borrowing from others.so many
rafi fans put his name for their sons and I am among
one.no words there how to express the affection to him.
i think no other artist in the world history like rafi saab
as far as the peoples love and affection is concerned.
i feel i am so lucky that i could be a part of rafi saabs fans.

  14. Vinodji,

I want to tell all the fans that Kishoreda himself was a fan of rafisahab and in his one of the article he specified this thing. Reallly great singer rafisahab was. And about Bharat Ratna, Mohdrafi himself is our Bharat Ratna in our Film music industry.

  15. A S MURTY says:

the suggestions that the rafi-fans themselves institute an international award in the name of rafi sahab is something worth considering. yes there should not be any shortage of funds, what with millions of rafi-fans spread throughout the world. what one needs is to bring most of them under one umbrella and towards this end the rafi foundation can take the initiative by spreading this message across the media, word of mouth publicity etc. what i also suggest is that every rafi-fan should have a bye-line in his/her email id as a “signature” that reads something like “mohd rafi – a paragon of virtues” or anything that is very approrpriate to the persona that rafi sahab is. that way, every time a mail is sent by a rafi-fan to his/her contacts, the bye-line message will be conveyed to their contacts. they can also send message to their friends/relatives with a well drafted message on these lines and asking the message to be forwarded to as many people as possibly can. the international award is a good example to show to the powers-that-be that rafi-fans would not rest and will bestow the highest awards in rafi sahab’s names to the best of singers/composers/musicians, etc. i understand that the rafi foundation has also taken up steps to re-start the campaign for the bharat ratna to rafi sahab and that the ball will be set rolling shortly.

  16. Binu Nair says:

    re:post 31 & 32….

pratibha ji: right sentiments which is shared by millions of rafi fans. even, after 29 years rafi saaheb is loved and liked like a true saint. people in this time span forget many of their relatives but here we are; a great majority of music lovers – remembering rafi saaheb – “every day”.
in a recent musical of rafi show at mira road, mumbai, the three-and-half show went on without a break and people “struck” to their seats, not missing even a ounce of a rafi song – such was the rafi magic.
a journo from the ians next morning reported : a marriage band stopped its music to listen rafi tunes in the adjoining ground of gcc club, even the ipl match between mumbai and calcutta (sachin vs. dada ganguly) going on nearby at the club drew “scanty” crowds on a sunday evening and people did’nt even get up for a break. this is rafi’s popularity and we are blessed that we are in some small way – paying tributes to one of the greatest man born in this part of the world.
i have met ravi saaheb and he mentioned that rafi saaheb broke down during the rehearsal of the song “suddenly” at his home and he summoned Zaheer his brother-in-law and manager to know the reason.
the occassion was around rafi’s daughters marriage and rafi could not control his emotions for his daughter and the song rightly is “babul ki duwayen leti jaa” from neel kamal written by Sahir.
    ————————————————————————————

vinod ji: yes . i am confident of the bharat ratna movement getting steam and the next six months “every” rafi lover must send the appeal signed by them to the decision makers right from the prime minister, president, union ministers and beaureucrats.
many of them are rafi lovers and this is the best “opportunity” friends for honouring mohd rafi saaheb with the bharat ratna award.

let me mention that i am a very happy and content person today. the reason being that ” few acts done by us rafi lovers in mumbai along with mr.narayanan of bangalore to show our affection for rafi saaheb ” is growing and should i say “boomeranging” to many parts bringing joy and companionship to music lovers . This will never stop now and we have blissful days ahead to enjoy rafi works which is indeed the “food for our hungry souls”.

    Janab Vinod Viplav Sahab,
Hearty congratulations for an excellant article, which touched every Rafi lover’s heart. rafi sahab died on 4th day of holy month of Ramzaan. There is a belief amongst muslims that any one who dies during this month reaches heaven. It is very interesting and to be noted that Maleka Tarrannum Noor Jahan Saheba also died during the month of Ramazan.
With regards to all Rafi lovers,
    Long live Rafi Sahab,

whatever you all are doing for his voice and his name, all reader and listener
    will be thank full.

    keep it up

  19. Vinod Viplav says:

I am agree with the suggestion that Mohammad Rafi is far avobe any award. We should pressurise Governments of India, Pakistan and Other contries to intitute Awards in the name of Mohammad Rafi and the imprtance of award should be more or at least same as Dada Sahab Phalke Award. I have a idea that beside putting presure on Governments we all Rafi Fains of the world collectively start an annual award on International Level and that award should be given on the basis of judgement of an International Jury of Rafi Fans, Music Directors and Singers. I think if all Rafi Fans do this work collectively, there will be no short of Money to start this type of initiative. Whem we will start this activity then Govt. will be forced to do the same.
I hope that some Rafi Fans will come forward and take responsibility to do this.
Secondly according to suggestion given by Mr. Binu Nair, each Rafi Fans should not only forwar mails to Politicians but each and every known persons, so that an suitable environment should be created and people verdict should be evolved.

  20. V. PRATHIBA says:

Vinod Viplav ji, I fully agree with you. You have brought out the inner feelings of most of the Rafi Saheb fans. Whether it is a philosophical song or song sung in a jolly mood, he brings out the best with full dedication. He takes us to the mood in which the song is composed. This is the god given talent to Rafi Saheb. Songs like Dekhi Jamaane ki Yaari (Kagaz ke phool), Ye Duniya agar mil bi jayato kya hai (Pyasa) are some of the songs to justify the above. Once in a Jayamala programme Music Director Ravi narrated the following: While he was composing music for the song “Babul ki duvaye leti jaa (Neel Kamal)’’ Rafi Saheb wept at the end of recording. Ravi asked for the reason. Then Rafi Saheb replied that his daughter is getting married soon and will be going to Sasuraal in near future and this thought brought tears in his eyes. This particular song definitely brings tears in the eyes of a father, who sends his daughter to in-law’s house. Some of his songs can give soothing effect to a disturbed mind, which one cannot explain but only has to experience.
He not only sang “Yaha ki daulat yaha rahegi….(Basti Basti) but also practised in life by helping the needy people. That shows how great a philanthropist he was. As pointed out by you some times I used to think that Rafi saheb could have lived for another fifty years.

  21. unknow says:

Dearest Binu Nair and Mohd Rafi fans
now is the time to start the campaign to Mohd Rafi should get award from Pakistan and other country where is Mohd rafi top singer in there country. Please think of sending mails to all the mp’s, ministers of Pakistan and other country not for Bharat ratna boz this award lost it honestly after human like ………had his award also don’t forget this award is for who was great and not for who is still great

  22. unknow says:

Dada Sahib Phalke award why Mohd Rafi not has this award boz this award is the name of who made the bollywood and Mohd Rafi is who changed bollwoody with his voice mohd Rafi from nothing, there should be award in the name of Mohd Rafi as same in Dada Sahib Phalke award.

  23. Arif says:

1st June, on NDTV i listen an interview of Manna Dey, he said that Rafi sahib was better singer than me, Rafi sahib’s voice was God gifted voice. no one can reach upto Rafi sahib height, he also praised kishore sahib and said he was also better singer than him. he just pointed kishore sahib’s ohter talents like, comedy, acting, music director. i have listen may interview of Manna Dey he always praise Rafi sahib no matter somebody ask about Rafi sahib or not.

  24. Dhani Ram says:

    All Rafi fans

It is a pity that the man who reached out to the largest number of people, who gave them the sweetest moments in their lives, whose voice creates a divine atmosphere wherever it is heard does not figure anywhere in the calculations of powers that be.Leave aside the Padmas etc awarded by the Government, the film industry itself has not given his due to Rafi Sahib. And I simply can’t understand how Dada Sahib Phalke award,an award for excellence in music,is being withheld from Rafi? I am not inclined to conspiracy theories but the trustees of the award should lay our doubts to rest by explaining to us what they find amiss in Rafi.

But I haven’t been able to understand one thing in the article. It is said that some singers claim or have claimed to be better than Rafi.Who are these singers? I don’t know of any singer of standing who has claimed to be better than Rafi.Kishore,Mukesh,Manna Dey,Mahendra Kapoor,Talat,Hemant,Jagjit,Mehandi Hassan,Yesudas,SP Balasubramaniam have never made any such claim. If some third rate singer has done it,let just have a hearty laugh and move on.

  25. Binu Nair says:

vinod ji: good one, straight from the heart. keep it up.

now is the time to start the Bharat Ratna campaign. Please think of sending mails to all the mp’s, ministers and the civil servants and six months of activity from each and every rafi lover will help the mission.
this is a grand opportunity and you being in delhi could support the cause in a big way and take it to it’s logical conclusions.

the mission must be taken “forward”

    binu nair….

  26. unknow says:

Sir vinod Viplavji and Mohd Rafi fans,
you don’t think that after a human like Lataji got Bharat Ranta award the same award should go to Mohd Rafi !!!!!offourse Lata ji was great singer,we should know that Bharat Ranta award given to who WAS great not to who is still great as our Mohd Rafi…..
I think we Mohd Rafi fans should speak to Gov’t of others country where people like Mohd Rafi more than there local singers these country should give award to Mohd Rafi……………..

  27. kn.kumar says:

A wonderful article on Rafi Saab, vinod Viplavji. I thank you a lot for putting in words the feelings of millions of Rafi fans.Rafi Saab was a ‘farishta”. He was a noble soul like Swami Vivekananda, Mahathma Gandhi, Mother Theresa and Vinoba Bhave. He was sent by God to do his duty for a certain period of time and then return back. He endeared himself to all he came in contact with.
He was blessed with a devine voice and that is why we miss him so much. Everyday unless we hear him, we feel that we have missed something. Even when we are hearing other singers, after sometime we want to hear Rafi Saab. That is the magic of his voice. Everytime we hear him, even though we are enjoying the song, there is a tinge of sadness that he is no more and what we are hearing is decades old recorded. Isn’t it true? Rafi Saab was the greatest secularist. How sad that this Govt which swears by secularism has not found fit to honor him adequately which would have gladened the hearts of millions worldwide. When Lataji was honored we all felt happy. She definately deserved the Bharat Ratn as did M.S.Subbalakshmi. Just a few days back I read that Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander who was the first to climb Mount Everest was posthomously awared the title Pamda Vibhushan. And the greatest singer India has produced, Rafi Saab, is continuosly ignored. Is there any justice in this world. Are we being ruled by ignorant people who do not know the contribution of Rafi Saab?Is there politics here also?Have we degraded to such an extent that we do not know how to honor the really deserving?Rafi Saab is beyond all the awards, titles, etc that any Govt can give.He never craved for anything in his life. That is why he lives in the hearts of millions of people worldwide and that too even after 28 years after his passing away. For us Rafi fans, he will always continue to be an ideal person worthy of emulation.

  28. Jayant Sanyal says:

    Dear Mr. Viplov,

Couldn’t agree with you more. Please accept my heartiest congratulations on the wonderful tribute that you have penned on Rafi Sahab. It is indeed a tradegy of mammoth proportions that this “VOICE OF GOD” has not got its due from this world- A world that has found solace in the soothing and peacful voice of the Late Maestro; A world that has been a fortunate recipient of the entertainment and sheer joy that Rafi Sahab’s songs have provided. What this world has to offer to Rafi Sahab- only a Padmshri and some filmfare awards? is that all? I agree with you when you say that rafi Sahab’s contribution towards maintaining the secular fabric of this nation is unparalled- A fact that the government of India has ignored.A fact that we as citizens of India have ignored. Rafi Sahab not only in his life time but long after his death continues to remain as the finest ambassador of melody, music, unity and champion of the cause of secularism- a shining example of our “Ganga-Jamuni Tahzeeb”.
Let us start a movemnt and raise awareness among people about Rafi Sahab and his contribution and make this world a more beautiful place top live in.

    With Best Wishes!

    Jayant Sanyal

  29. M P Gurg, Delhi says:

I am a new visitor to this Website devoted to the memory of Rafi Sahab. I read this well written tribute full of emotions and deep feeling for Rafi Sahab. I am totally agree with the view and feelling of Vinod Viplav. Why we are behaving like a silent spectators and doing nothing. Today When all small singers getting highest awards but this great singer had been denied even award like Padam Bhushan and Dada Sahab Phalke. Manna Dey has been awarded by Dada Sahab Phalke Award who always say that Mohammad Rafi is the greatest singer. Why Govt is unaware of this simplest fact, that everybody know.

  30. Sivee Chawla says:

I am awestruck by the sincerity with which Vinod Viplav ji has given tribute to The Great Mohamad Rafi Sahab . It is also very true that in this age of short lived popularity , Rafi Sahab is still alive in the hearts of music lovers all over the world , which is indeed amusing. There has been no dearth of great musicians and singers during his times and the present times , but the only thing which , according to me , segregates him from others is the Divine touch in his voice which is the result of the beautiful heart bestowed to him by the Almighty.

As commented by many other Rafians fans in this article , he is indeed a “farishta” –
    “Khuda ke bande hain wo”

excellent write up Vinodji with following quotes are just superb:

His voice gives great solace and mental peace like the lap of a caring mother, helping hands of an affectionate lover, supporting shoulder of a father and valuable lesson of an experienced teacher

he is the greatest symbol of human values, patriotism, secularism and communal harmony in the age of social, ethnic and religious conservations

What God is supposed to give us? Nothing more than the peace of the mind. In the some way, songs of Mohammad Rafi provide us not only the peace of the mind but also ease our suffering and pain

after bread, clothing and shelter, voice of Mohammad Rafi is the basic necessity of life without which life is impossible.

my heartiest thanks for this write up and expect many more such gems from you

having posted my earlier comment, i just could not leave this page and was scrolling up and down several times through the article “the real god of our times”. in fact i like to type this phrase again and again. it feels very soothing. i was trying to read through the mind of vinod viplavji, for surely he has much more within his thoughts than he could have possibly expressed in an article like this. did he write the article with a lot of emotion ? i then went on to watch the two videos posted in the article and the picture becomes clearer. the second video conveys his true feelings and throws several questions to the government of the day, the political parties, the so-called secularists, the very many organizations professing by the name of rafi sahab, the several ‘musical nites’ organized every year on 31st july and 24 december, again in the name of rafi sahab and the various other groups of rafi-sahab’s fans. the pain in vinodji’s heart towards the great apathy shown by all concerned as far as rafi sahab is concerned is evident. he asks very pertinent questions. bharat ratna is one topic to which we shall return later on. vinodji asks that in our country which boasts of every other political leader’s statue in every street corner, why is there no street named after rafi sahab, why has never a statue of rafi sahab been installed in any of the cities, why no music academy has been started in the name of rafi sahab, why no library is named after rafi sahab and so on and so forth. very pertinent questions and which require reasonable and truthful answers. vinodji points out that rafi sahab could be the best example of secularism and no one could agree more on this score. yet, the cohorts of ‘secularism’ in our country have never given a thought to name rafi sahab as one of the greatest secularists. vinodji, i salute you on not only presenting your views through this article but also taking up an issue which all right thinking people should have taken up long ago. i also give below a link to an orkut group : Bharat ratna shri mohd. rafi sahab and ask all gmail users to join this group.

the final words of vinodji on the second video that there is no medicine available anywhere which will ease the pain of the heart and mind other than the sweet melody of rafi sahab’s voice. kudos once again to the author and to his commitment.

Just a brief deviation from the main topic, to which I will return again with more of my comments.
“die hard rafian” from chennai, Sir, I quote below a message from ms. rajani nair for rafi-fans in chennai :

“”Dakshinaa – A socio cultural organisation in Chennai is organising “Raagam Sudarshanam” an evening of Mohd. Rafi Songs on June 21, 2008 At Kamarajar Hall, Teynampet, Chennai. Popular singer ANIL BAJPAI will render rare and evergreen Rafi numbers alongwith some other celebrity singers from Chennai. The program is a fund raiser for providing eye care for 1000 under previleged people in association with Sankara Netralaya. All Rafi fans are requested to come forward and make this programme a grand success!!””

sorry about the deviation friends, i will be back with more comments on this article and the theme shortly again.

    Vinodji,

Dil se badhaai… sachmuch rafi sahab ek farishta the jo duniya me logo ki paresanio ko dur karne k liye uparwale ka doot banke aaye aur apne kaam ko bakhuvi anjaam tak pahuchaya. Unke jane ke itne salo baad bhi unke gaano ko sunkar aisa lagta hai jaise wo hamare aas paas hi hai.. Jab bhi mai kaam se thak jata hoo to Rafi sahab ke geeto ko sunta hoo aur mera vishwas kijiye mai phir se taro taaza mahsoos karne lagta hoo, ye Rafi sahab ke aawaj ka hi to jaado hai…

ek baar phir se aapko badhaai…

  46. Die hard Rafian says:

I am totally agree with vinod viplav sahab and 1A S MURTY that Rafi was a Farishta who was send to earth to ease and relieve the pain and tension of human being with his voice. He did his responsibilty in superb manner. I want to share my personal feelling – I felt that when I am hearing songs of Rafi Sahab or remembring him, I feel secure from dangers. Many times when I drive car and hearing music of Rafi Sahab, I fell that some body is saving me from even minor accidents. I am not sure why I fell like this or is there any truth. Is there is some kind of supernatural power with the memory of Rafi Sahab. May be it is my personal thought. But I agree that Rafi Sahab was and is, because he is still with us, more than a human being. It is impossible for a human being to sing like Rafi Sahab.
    Die hard Rafian, Chennai

  47. Anmol Singh says:

    Vinod Viplav Ji,

Aap ne to apna dil khol ke rakh diya.

Before appreciating Rafi it is very important to feel the truthfullness of his voice. For that individual has to himself has be truthfull. Rafi Sahab was a highly spiritually enlightened soul. This can be felt from the devotional songs sung by Rafi Sahab from any belief.

Although Rafi Sahab has left his physical form by he will live forever as long as melody will exist.

  48. Recenty in one of the Kannada quiz program on TV, the participants were asked to identify, the person who was regarded as having “divine voice”. Of course, I immediately recognised but the TV participants did not. The answer given was “Mahammed Rafi”. True, Rafiji had a divine voice and I fully agree with the Author that in times of personal distress / tension, Rafiji’s voice is so soothing that one feels totally relaxed.

  49. Anup Dhir says:

I share the view expressed by Vinod Viplav. I also though many times that Mohammad Rafi is more than human being. Sonu Nigam always said that Mohammad Rafi is God for him, but I think that he is God for every person who love him.

  50. A S MURTY says:

Vinod Viplavji. first of hearty congratulations to you for writing straight out of your heart. The moment I saw this new article, its heading “the real god of our time” i knew that we are in for a write up that sums up the feelings of a great majority of music lovers and indeed all the rafi-fans put together. you deserve special accolades simply because you have echoed our feelings in such a super fashion. not long ago, a close friend of ours who is a rafi-fan to the core had remarked that rafi sahab was much more than a singer and a human being. that rafi sahab was almost equal to a ‘god’ and that a new religion called ‘rafism’ will evolve. while i was dumbfounded with this new theory at that time, i realise what he had meant is partly conveyed in your great write-up. many a times while browsing through various comments on articles on these pages or elsewhere and also on the videos of rafi sahab’s songs, i have come across a very apt phrase “the voice of god”. all that jells perfectly with what you have written in your article. you are a good writer both in hindi and english and please continue to spread your message across all fora available to you.
