Mohammed Rafi – Mujhe Darde Dil Ka Patha Na Tha
This article is written by Mr. Gaurav D Bijoor.
Mohammed Rafi – “Mujhe Darde Dil Ka Patha Na Tha Mujhe Aap Kis Liye Mil Gaye, Main Akela Yoon Hee Majhe Main Tha Mujhe Aap Kis Liye Mil Gaye”
A very rare and a beautiful duet between Mohammed Rafi Saab and Ronu Mukherjee (daughter of Hemant Kumar) titled “Sara mora gajra chhudaya toonhe, garva kaise lagaya toonhe, O rasiya mana basiya, teekha teekha kajra lagaya toonhe …. Ko jaadu jagaya toonhe” from the film “Do Dil” written by Kaifi Azmi and music scored by Hemant Kumar. This film had Biswajeet & Rajashri in the lead roles. The other great song from this film being a super solo sung by Rafi Saab is titled as “Tera husna rahe mera ishka rahe tho ye subha ho ye sham rahe na rahe” indeed a master-piece composition.
The few other great classics by Rafi Saab with Hemant Kumar are as follows
1)Â Â Â Â Â “Mori Vinathi Suno” a solo by Rafi Saab from the film Taj written by Rajinder Krishna
2)Â Â Â Â Â “Dil mein teri” a duet by Rafi Saab with Asha Bhosale from the film Badal Barsaat
3)Â Â Â Â Â “Yeh mard bade” a solo by Rafi Saab from the film Miss Marry
4)Â Â Â Â Â “Brindaban ka kishana kanaiya” from the film Miss Marry
5)Â Â Â Â Â “O raat ke musafir chanda jara batade” from the film Miss Marry
Friends I heard these classic renditions for the first ever time and was totally mesmerized and having no words at my disposal just uttered “Great Beauty”. Does the above few renditions belong to any generation, caste OR creed and whether the same pertains to any class belonging to either of the rich or the elite OR the poor and the downtrodden.
The sheer subject of Music I personally believe can never ever be a part or parcel of any past or future generations to come and simultaneously ones age cannot be a factor in simply determining the period of the music whatsoever.
When a nut of my caliber can enjoy the beauty & spirit of the by-gone music and melodies what makes the innumerable others like me to refrain from cherishing those great classics I deeply wonder? I have also been a great admirer and fan of Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher and several of the other present day other contemporaries ruling the roast of today’s cinema and music; but no one has ever stopped me in loving & respecting the Greatest of them all in the beautiful form of our beloved king of melody Mohammed Rafi Saab.
Let the period change as also the generation changes but where on Earth has the beautiful Nature changed and thus simply why are we all changing?
Indian cinema especially the hindi film industry has over the past several years have given us great artists, musicians, lyricists, great producers & directors, magnificent play-back singers and above all the unforgettable classic feature films which we today’s generation should equally love and respect and above all arrange to treasure these sentiments to enable us to pass on the same to the future generations to come and for them to cherish. Is this not our duty and part of our dear social obligations friends?
Today I would love to present a small list of the great renditions by Mohammed Rafi Saab which falls under the sad or the darda bhare naghme category and the same have been chosen from my very personal choice amongst the very few.

Rafi Saaheb Songs are a Ocean…. and many many singers are trying to reach out there and collect some Gems and Render those gems………..
The search of such Gems amidst the Ocean of Rafi Saaheb Songs will go on – From Generation to Generation.
Mohd Rafi is the Bharat Ka Ratan having left behind the Bharat Ratna singer miles behind in singing and in character – 32 years of his moving away from his Lovers.
The insecurity is ‘surely’ bothering few but the world is Enjoing Rafi Saheb Tunes.
Dear savita ji, raj ji!priya ji
mere post number 1292 ko mulahza karen,
rahi lata ji ke appraisal ki baat to chalo khushi hai ke aaj 29 saalon ke baad unki aankh to khuli. abe.tak to rafi saheb ke maamle mein unki zaban chup rahi, apne programmes mein rafi saheb ki aawaz mein gaane ke liye unho ne s.p.bala subramanium tak ko tarjeeh di lekin koi bhi rafi clone khawh woh shabbir kumar hon ya mohd.aziz hon unko nahi liya, shayad ghalti se ek baar shabbir kumar ko londaon ke 6 roz ke programme ke contact mein le gayee thee lekin jab 2 hi programmes mein shabbir kumar ne rafi saheb ke geeton ko gaate huey apni ek jagah banali aur log sirf rafi saheb ke hi geeton ko sunna chah rahey thay to unke bhai saheb ne shabbir bhai ke hathon mein wapsi ka ticket yeh kehte huey thama dia ke yahan log tumhe pasand nahi karrahay.
lata ji ek bahut badi bulkay female playback singers ki list mein sab se oonchi fankaar hain lekin kahin na kahin woh hamesha rafi saheb ki gayeki se khaufzada raheen. aaj 29 saal ke baad unka yeh iqraar rafi saheb ko badai nahi bukshta bulkay yeh alfaaz ada karke aaj woh khud badi ho gayee hain. aaj rafi saheb ke naam ka sahara lekar bahut saare puraane aur unke hum-asr fankaar hain jo headlines mein banay huey hain, khuda ne aql to sabhi ko ata kiya hai hum bhi aasani se is baat ka andaaza laga sakte hain khawh woh manna dey sb hon ya naushad saheb hon ya lata ji hon ya aarti mukherji hon.
naushad saheb ke geeton ko rafi saheb ne ‘laa-faani’ yani immortal banadiya,
waqt ke saath apne daur ka sab se bada music director bhi khamosh ho gaya lekin rafi saheb ki be waqt maut ne jaise unhe zindagi dedi aur woh ek baar phir se surkhiyon mein aagaye aur rafi saheb ki sari kaamyabi ka sehra unho ne sirf apne sar pe baandh liya.(meri baatein kuchh logon ko buri to zaroor lag rahi hain lekin yeh woh haqeeqat hai jis se inkaar mumkin nahi).
r.d.burman jin ke pehle geet ko aawaz dene ke liye s.d.burman sb ne rafi saheb se guzarish ki aur r.d.burman jis ki dhuno ko rafi saheb ne laa-zawal bana diya ….. misaal lijye……. arey o goria kahan tera des re, aaja aaja amin hoon pyar tera, tumne mujhe dekha ho ker, chura liya hai, pal do pal ka saath hamara, lekin fusion ke naam pe confusion ki jab hawa chali to r.d.sb bhi sari pichhli baatein bhool gaye.
asha ji apne kisi programme mein rafi saheb ka zikr tak nahi karteen, woh bhool gayeen ke diwana hua badal, isharon isharon mein dil lene walay, phir milogi kabhi is baat ka waada karlo, teri patli kamar, mujhe pyar ki zindagi dene walay, in geeton mein agar rafi saheb ki aawaz na hoti to ……….
aaj to woh khamosh hain lekin kuchh barson ke baad jab woh khud gumnaami ki raah pe chal padengi to achanak unhe khayal aayega ‘rafi bhaiya’ ka….. aur woh bhi baday khoobsurat bayan dekar khud ko limelight mein laengi………kyunki rafi saheb aaj ke daur ki ek aisi sachchai hain jinse inkaar mumkin nahi.

Gaurav ji..
I would like to rectify a mistake as you have written that the song”sara mora kajra”from do dil has been sung by Ronu Mukherji, it is not ronu mukherji but it is AArti Mukherji. and this song is perhaps the life time achievement for this female artiste, though she is a renowned name for the listeners.
My Favorite list mentioned by Mr. Gaurav D Bijoor in this article………
All mentioned songs are great hits of all time.
Regards,
-Imran-
I am very to say nobody has taken care of Great Music Director Shri Ramlal even his photo and biography is not available on internet. What is the reason i do not understand still peoples are rembering his melody song Taqdeer Ka Fasana.

While mentioning songs of Rafi and Hemantkumar, you have forgotten to mention beautiful number “Jane kaham dekha hai kaham dekha hai tume” from the Hrishida film “Biwi aur Makhan” this is very different, classic and melodious
Mr. Gaurav, the said duet, a short version of 1 stanza is available, mail me if you need it.
melodiousrafi@gmail.com
“Rahe na rahe hum maheka karenge” from the film Mamta is also a duet which has been sung by Rafi Saab & Suman Kalyanpur under the music supervision of Roshan. The solo version has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
If any good soul has this duet song please insert the same on this site which I am longing to collect since long. Can any graceful Uncle OR Aunt please do the needful.
Thanks & Warm Regards

It is indeed a pleasant surprise to read the beautiful thoughts of these young OR the second generation like-minded music lovers in the form of Gaurav Bijoor & others of his age in this greatest site dedicated in the everlasting memory of Rafi Saab. It is indeed a sign & message for most of us to gracefully think of retiring thereby allowing such young generated admirers to take the overall charge of the situation. I had the opportunity in my life-time of reading almost all the articles written down by Gaurav and I can easily gauge the deep love & respect he owes to music & especially the Legend Rafi Saab in particular.
Dear Gaurav, please pull on the strings and simaltaneously invite the others of your age & creed to continue with the great and noble work, which will enable fans like us to ultimately retire & die a very peaceful death which is eternal.
Great Gauravjee ……..
With all due respect and apologies – I left a very important person from the hindi film music world – the first lady of music directors Usha Khanna in my previous reply (8). Usha Khanna and Mohd Rafi had a perfect understanding, all the way from her first film Dil Dekhe Dekho (“Hum Aur Tum Aur Yeh Sama” and several other hits) to one of the final everlasting songs that they paired together, “Teri Galiyon Mein Na” from the film Hawas.
“Mujhe Dard-E-Dil Ka Patha Na Tha” is again one of the top most songs of Rafi Saab where everything came together – the poetry, tuning, singing, instrumentation, background score, recording, etc. Even now upon listening to this song – one would think it was recorded sometime recently in a modern recording studio witht the latest equipment. All credit to lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD Chitragupta (what a music director he was), Mohd Rafi and all the musicians and recordists associated with this gem of a song from the film “Akashdeep”.
Binu has hit the nail when he mentions that Rafi Saab’s competition was Rafi Saab himself. One of the greatest attributes of Mohd Rafi, besides his divine voice, control, scaling, pronounciation, sur, taal and all the human mechanics of singing in a studio was that he never stopped learning. This is a great lesson for all aspiring musicians who yearn to achieve the greatest pinnacle as a musician (whether to be a singer, instrument player or a composer). He always wanted to learn more – whether it was from a GS Kohli, Iqbal Qureshi, C. Arjun, SN Tripathi, Prem Dhawan, Dulal Sen, Ramlal, Bipin-Babul, Sapan Jagmohan, Sonik-Omi etc. (all very good MD’s who had a few films) or youngsters (in the early 60’s) like KA, LP or RDB. It is said that he used to say, “I will go to their music room and sit down with them, so that I can learn from them”. This is the same person who had one of the busiest schedules in Hindi Film Music during the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. Amazing quality !!
It is also a very well known fact that the established MD’s like Naushad, SDB, OPN, SJ, C. Ramachandra, Roshan, Madan Mohan, Ravi, Chitragupta, Jaidev, Vasant Desai, Hemant Kumar, KA, LP, RDB etc. loved Rafi Saab’s versatility and improvisation when he was first given a brand new song to render. Being a very accomplished musician himself, Mohd Rafi would listen to the Mukhdas and Antaras from the MD’s and then start bringing into the song the feeling that it truly deserved. He knew exactly who the song would be picturised on, the setting in the story line, the scenary (whether outdoors or indoors) and how hindi film music lovers would embrace or accept the song. They would just be amazed at how their simple creation of a tune would turn out to be a masterpiece through the voice of Rafi Saab. It stumped them throughout their long illustrious careers. Of course, there were a few MD’s in the midst (during the 50’s and 60’s – no names mentioned here) who resented the fact that their original tune was altered and rendered in an inimitable style by the great one himself. They could not stand it that their song with their original tuning stamp became a Rafi song that people just loved.
I will close my remarks by just asking all music lovers to listen to the just released CD – “Tere Bagair” (YashRaj Music) and Rafi Saab’s seven gems created by late MD Madan Mohan. The liner notes mention that the songs were created between 1964 and 1972. Even though Mr. Sanjeev Kohli (Madan Mohan’s son) has given it a modern touch and re-recorded some of the instrumental portions, Rafi Saab’s voice is just amazing starting with the first song “Kaise Kategi Zindagi..Tere Bagair..Tere Bagair”. It gives one goosebumps. There will never ever be another singer of his calibre.
gauravbhai, many congratulations to you for coming up with article after article. this shows that your passion and devotion towards rafi sahab is unending and is growing by the day. you have expressed in such fine words the feelings that are in your heart and we all appreciate the work that you are doing. rafi sahab, as you have very well noticed, had excelled in almost all genres of songs and these ‘dard bhare naghme’ are some of the most remarkable songs. you must listen to ‘main tooti huyi ik naiyya hun, mujhe chaahe jidhar le jaao’ from the film ‘aadmi’ several times and rafi sahab will transpond you to another world by his sheer magic. there so many other songs that come under this category for e.g. ‘zindagi bhar gham judaai ka mujhe tadpayega’ and also ‘taqdeer ka fasana’ etc. keep writing and we all enjoy reading these articles.
Gaurav ji

the story behind the song is very good and informative, this all articles are memorable and to store
best of luck
Well done, GAURAV BIJOOR, once yet again. good subject. good analysis. you would by experience find many more songs of mohd rafi in the “dard bhara” category of songs.
indeed, mohd rafi has sung songs of all nine moods – each of them excelling the others.
thus, in music history, it will be seen that the biggest competitor of mohd rafi in hindi music would be none other than mohammad rafi saaheb himself.
==================================================
a reminder too for mohd rafi fans……
every sunday tune to malayalam t.v. channel Kairali from 9 am Morning to 9.30 pm and enjoy the mohd rafi serial “hridayathil rafi”.

Dear Gaurav:
Good article, but the song “saara mora kajra” was sung by aarti mukheree, not by hemant kumar’s daughter. Also, hemanta da’s daughter’s name is ranu mukherjee. Incidentally, the very year mahendra kapoor won the best male singer award in a talent search competition, aarti mukherjee won the best female singer award.
“Mujhe dard e dil ka pata na tha” is indeed one of the most melodius and touching songs of all time. Yet it does not get it’s due and is not really talked about as much. It is only when you listen to it by chance you realize the beauty. Terrific composition by ChitraGupta. Other numbers “Dil ka diya” by Lata and “Cha ud ja re panchhi” from the same movie “Akash Deep” are memorable.
Other mentioned song “Tera husn rahe mera ishq rahe” is also pure honey.
A pity that composers like Chitra Gupt, Hemant Kumar, Ravi and Jaidev are not realy recongnized for their quality work.
Great Article dear Gauravjee, however the song “Sara mora gajara chudaya tunhe” from the film “Do Dil” is sung with Rafi Saab by Aarthi Mukherjee.
