Rafi and Roshan created history with melody in 60s
Written by Mr. Souvik Chatterji
Roshan Lal Nagrath, better known as Roshan was born in Gujranwala on 14th July, 1917. His lessons from Ustad Allauddin and Sarangi King Bundu Khan transformed himself into regular composer of All India Radio in the 40s.
He started his career as composer in bollywood films with the film Neki Aur Badi in 1949. In the early 50s Mukesh and Talat Mehmood featured in most of the films of Roshan. Some of the hit songs included “khayalon me”, “sun bairi balam” from Bawre Nain, “tare toote duniya dekhe” from Malhar. Although he had success in the films Shisham, Anhonee, Malhar, etc., his immense talent did not get recognition until he used the man with the golden voice Mohammad Rafi.
Roshan stormed bollywood music with brilliant composition in the film Barsaat Ki Raat. The romantic film of Bharat Bhushan and Madhubala did fantastic business. Roshan’s brilliant use of sarangi was evident in Rafi’s song “zindagi bhar nahi bhulenge woh barsaat ki raat”. The song was sung by Rafi and Lata at different time in the film. Barsaat Ki Raat was also known for the famous qawalli “na to karwaki talash hai” and “yeh ishq ishq hai isqh isqh” where Rafi and Manna Dey were equally brilliant. Sahir Ludhiyanvi also made brilliant use of words in the songs of the film.
In 1962 Roshan amazed the listeners with the brilliant composition in the film Aarti. Pradeep Kumar, Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari played the lead roles in the film. The film had every type of song including folk song and ghazals. The song “baar baar mohe kya samjhaye” sung by Rafi and Lata had complete balance of melody and rhythm. The slow numbers in the film like “ab kya misaal doon mai tumhare shabab ki” sung by Rafi and “aapne yaad dilaaya to mujhe yaad aya” sung by Rafi and Lata can be considered to be some of the best ghazals in the entire 60s. Lata’s song “baharon ki manzil rahi” was equally brilliant.
Roshan used Mukesh and Manna Dey in Raj Kapoor’s film Dil Hi to Hai. The song “laga chunari me daag chupayun kaise” was a fine example of classical excellence in the film where Manna Dey showed his class.
Roshan received filmfare award for the best composer for his landmark creation in Pradeep Kumar’s Taj Mahal. All the songs of the film displayed the royal andaz of songs sung during the mughal period. Pradeep Kumar played the role of Shahjehan and Bina Roy played the role of Mumtaz Mahal. Rafi’s duet with Lata “jo wada kiya hai nibhana parega”, was as outstanding as Rafi’s song “paon chulenedo phoolon ko inaayat hogi”. The use of sarangi require special mention in the song “jo baat tujhme hai teri tasveer me nahi”.
The Rafi Roshan magic continued in the film Chitralekha in 1964. Rafi’s song “man re tu kahe na dhir dhare” is still considered to be one the most landmark bhajans of all times. Roshan was at his best in the film Bheegi Raat. Rafi made the audience stand up on their feet with the song “dil jo na keh saka”. The same song was sung by Lata too in the film. Rafi presented the other ghazal in the film in style titled “jane woh kaun hai kya naam hai in ankhoka”.
The Rafi Roshan combination continued to produce evergreen gems in the films Noorjahan and Bahu Begum. All the songs of Bahu Begum were masterpieces including Rafi’s “hum intezar karenge”, Lata’s “duniya kare sawal to hum kya jawab de”, Asha’s “niklete kahan janeke liye”, to mention a few. Roshan Rafi combination was also evident in the film Mamta. Rafi’s song “in baharon me akela na phiro” was as brilliant as “rahe na rahe hum” sung by Lata.
It is not possible to highlight the significance of Rafi Roshan combination of the 60s in a small article. Separate articles can be written on the music of the films Surat Aur Seerat, Dooj Ka Chand, Bedaag, etc. It was very amazing that Roshan had just received only one filmfare award in his illustrious career. The music of Taj Mahal, Bheegi Raat, Barsaat Ki Raat could qualify for national awards in the respective years. Roshan died in 1969 and the royal combination of Rafi and Roshan also ended with it.
The films and the songs require re-examination, restoration and preservation.
you are better than the comedian sunil pal,kk giving more hits than rafi saab, under roshan saab, and you are a singer- kya fenny chad gayee
post 45 Sunil Pal,
Greetings from all of us in Bangalore…
We are all shocked by your analysis that Roshanji is a ordinary music director and kishore da has sung maximum with him… Can you please elucidate this point?
Only Mukeshji, Rafi sahab and Mannada have sung maximum songs with Roshanji all very meloidous ones and as far as Kishore da is concerned he has sung more songs with Rajesh roshan and less than 10 with his father Roshanji.
Have you heard songs from Taj Mahal,Babar,Barsaat ki Raat, Dil hi tho hai,Bheegi raat, Aakrhri khat, Aarthi , Nayi umar ki nayi fasal etc etc with so many melodious songs …..
The indian films the best quavali Ishq, isq was composed by none other than Roshanji…….
Kindly listen to all the melodious songs and then make a comment before just shooting of from your mind Pal,
Narayan, Usha,Ganesh, and friends,

Mr Sunil Pal – singer from Goa. Can you please tell me one song which Kishore Kumar has sung for Roshan. I am dying to hear it and acknowledge his “contribution” towards Roshan’s hit songs
Post no. 38 of Kishorefan!
You are very honest and sincere in admitting that Kishore Kumar does not have even 100 fans!!!
I congratulate you at least on this honest confession!
Venkat
Binu Nair ji, Venkatadri ji and Rafi fan ji,
Congratulations.
It is a thrill to watch rafi ji garnering number of votes everyday at whopopular.com. Very soon he is going to get highest number of votes in indian musicians category at the site.
I agree with venkatadri ji, close competitors i.e. illayaraja and a r rehman are currently active and so much relevance need not be placed on their votes. Rafi ji, who passed away 3 decades back is getting such votes i.e really amazing to see and a great feeling for all the rafi fans.
Even many others in the list are currently active, so nothing much to think about them. In the indian list of musicians only 4 playback singers who passed away decades back are enjoying popularity (with rafi ji leading by a remarkable popularity and majority in votes) in whopopular.com i.e. Mohd. rafi with top position, Kishore kumar, Geeta Dutt and ghantasala.
Remaining musicians are currently active musicians, so nothing much importance to place on them. It is really amazing to see the yester year artists enjoying popularity (even today) and who passed away decades back.
roashan had very little knowledge about music. roashan doesn’t need any votes.shankar jaikishan,op nayyar,sd burman, naushad etc were far far better than him. roashan learned music from bade ghulam ali khan sahab. also anil bishwas and naushad learned from him. producres wanted a variety in 60’s ,. they needed music directors who can give any type of music. roashan failed there . so he is not a very big music director.he is just a ordinary composer who can give the same music again and again. i believe even rd burman. even roashan’s son rajesh roashan are better than him who can give any type of music. roashan had most of his hit songs under talat mahmood and kishore da,not under rafi sahab. any way all three are great singers in their own way,but kishore da is the best who can sing any type os song under any composer.

Sunil Pal Post 27 – Are you kidding. Either you know too much about music or we know nothing.
Rafifan and venkatadri
I have seen the whopopular.com. When did the voting start, can anybody confirm, means when did the site started operating. Illayaraja, got so many votes, how did that happen. Is illayaraja so famous than mohd rafi in music world ? A r rehman, currently appears to be a famous musician. There are many other names as well among the top 20 indian musicians and and many are really not famous, but enjoy many votes ? Even lata mangeshkar, naushad etc. are not among the 20 musicians
Post 34: Do not bother about Naushad. Just think why Kishore has less votes than Rafi Saheb?
Post no. 34
God, what a twisted and perverted logic by this Kishorefan!!
Babu Moshai, that poll is surely reflecting a combination of ‘intrinsic talent’ and ‘public popularity’! Besides, it is also reflecting who has the highest number of ‘steadfast and loyal’ fans and not ‘transient, lip-sympathy fans’ who are in plenty for some ‘great’ singers!
Naushad Saab, while he scores very high in intrinsic talent, is not among the very popular ones as he has not caught the fancy of the public. Your Guru is medium on both counts and the poll is reflecting that!
Rafi Saab is very very high on both counts! And the poll is just reflecting that.
This is my last word on this subject and I would not entertain any more of perverted arguments from the likes of you!
Venkat
B Venkatadri ji,
It is really great to see your message and votes in favour of rafi ji and yes the closest competitors are Illayaraja (who is currently number one with rafi just behind him in second position) and the third trailing is A R rehman. There is a great chance for rafi to become number one in the category and we believe for sure he will, shortly.
Surprising to note that lata mangeshkar has very little votes – only 35 and for naushad – not even a single vote.
Venkatadri ji,
Naushad has got 0 votes in the poll. It is naushad who made rafi famous. What do you say for this? Is the poll site not a trick ?
Venkatadri ji,
Is it not surprising that lata mangeshkar has hardly got 35 votes in the poll and even other indian musicians such as kishore kumar, ghantasala, yesudas, spb etc. are ahead in the votes in whopopular.com as compared to lata mangeshkar. Is lata mangeshkar so cheap. Moreover, Saigal name is not present at all. Is saigal not a musician ? I doubt there is some trickery going on in this poll related sites. Moreover, I have seen every one hour one can sit and vote for the same musician. So if 100 people sit together and vote for one musician, say 10 votes per day makes 1000 and in 10 days 10000 votes. Something appears strange and tricky whether really the popularity measure is to be believed.
Venkatadri ji,
Popularity has nothing to do with gifted talent. There is no link between both at all. Many people with gifted talents are not known at all.
Ref Post 33 Mr. B. Venkatadri, very real statement and straight forward, must everybody to accept at any circumstances.
also from the film bedaag, the song – zindagi ke mod par jo koi rasta mila, teri gali se ja mila – is simply heavenly singing by rafi sahab.
Souvikji, there is one fabulous song from Dooj Ka Chand by Rafi Sahab, with female chorus – Sun ae mahjabeen mujhe tujhse ishq nahin. This is a typically arabic style of song and one will never tired of listening to Rafi sahab in the song. also, i feel this could be the only instance where rafi sahab sings only with female chorus.
Reg. Post No. s 26 and 28!
Let us try and understand the current poll that is going on at whopopular.
1. It is a very widely advertised/publicised poll, by any standards. Links to various celebrities on that poll are floating around by dozens on various popular websites, including facebook.
2. Now, it is in such a very widely advertised poll that Rafi Saab is soon (may be by March 15) going to be no. 1, not only among all singers (this, he is already!!), but among all ‘musicians’ of India!!
3. And who are his competitors? Very popular and today’s MDs like A.R.Rahman and Ilayaraja and very popular and today’s singers such as Sonu Nigam and Kumar Sanu!!
4. Frankly, I myself was amazed at such stellar performance of Rafi Saab in this poll. After all, he left this world physically as long back as 30 years back! While alive, he never tried even one bit to publicise/promote himself! He never knew ‘computers’, much less the internet!! In contrast, A.R.Rahman, Ilayaraja, etc. are very much alive and active still promoting their careers!
5. So, what does it show? (a) Rafi Saab has the highest number of ‘steadfast and loyal’ fans among all musicians of yesterday and today! The emphasis is on ‘steadfast and loyal’. (b) Rafi Saab’s fans are located all over the world and are of various age groups! (c) Rafi Saab’s fans are highly vocal about his unparalleled greatness and they mean it sincerely, unlike the sometimes ‘more vocal’ fans of some undeserving singer (s)!
6. Finally, I used to always make one pet statement! That is: The songs that are heard most at any given point in time are either the ‘songs of this calendar year’ or ‘Rafi songs’. It goes without saying that the ‘songs of this calendar year’ are not constant, but keep varying with each calendar year, whereas ‘Rafi songs’ are constant year after year, eternally.
Now, with the results of this poll, I can make that pet statement of mine far more emphatically.
7. Finally, I have a strong feeling that Rafi Saab’s popularity, defying the normal trends, is increasing as years are passing!! Many new generation fans are coming in constantly simply because the power of his hundreds of great songs is so potent and so difficult to resist/ignore, irrespective of time!!
8. RAFI SAAB= Highest Quantity of Greatest Quality in Mind-boggling Variety!
This point no. 8 is an absolute scientific truth as true as Sun rising everyday on the East!!
Venkat

Sunilji
Pardon my lack of knowledge, can you list out any one of the songs sung by
Kishore Kumar for Roshan.
Sir b.venkatadri…I am not Lata ji fan but at whopopular.com she got only 5 vote u don’t think that is unpair for this great singer Lata ji, If am not wrong she also got Bharat Ranta award!!!!!? as said by OPN that Mohd Rafi is good singer but better human…If we go whopopular.com we will see that mohd rafi is number 1 as singer and i don’t who is number 1 and from where also…no 2 is AR Rahman I feel he is nowhere to SJ,Madan Mohan,Naushand,SD……..
They will not going to give Bharat ratna award to Mohd Rafi but if they did so what because mohd rafi is world Ratna not only Bharat..many who got Bharat ratna award even we don’t remember them but Mohd rafi is become famous day after day..
As sun is important for earth as I feel that mohd rafi is only sun in playback singing all others are stars some small and some big stars but stars light never be compare with sun light….
roashan is a great music director. but talat mahmood and kishore da have contributed more to him than rafi
. “man re tu” i like kishore da’s version more than rafi sahab’s. but it is my personal view.anyway both are great.
also other music directors like sj,lp,op nayyar, naushad,rd ,sd are far better than roashan. producers also ignored roashan because he had only little classical knowledge. other music directors could compose better westernized songs superbly. where roashan failed. madan mohan and he were very unlucky also because navketan,rk never used them for their films.
because as quality of music and songs were changing, they could not apply properly in the background.
Post 24.. I am with u mr.venkatadri. rafi is the uncrowned king. after 30 years is he evergreen and people love him and adore him.
after 5 years of a stars going, he is forgotten. every friday a stars fate is made and unmade.
many of the bharat ratnas are forgotten and are meant for the record books.
but, our rafi is “evergreen” and “immortal”. mohd rafi is simply “bharat ka ratna” the only true hero.
yours truly
binu nair….
Combination of Rafi Sb and Roshan was marvelous in movies like Barsat ki Raat, Bahu Begum and Taj Mahal. Whenever we think about some sweet royal music, Roshan Jee and Rafi Sb come into our minds. what a music they both have given to the music industry, brilliant.
Regards,
-Imran-
Binu Ji,
I had sent a mail and checked with whopopular.com. It appears that they have not fixed any timeline for this poll!!! Really funny!!!
All the same, let’s continue the good work of voting briskly and propfusely!!
Venkat
Souvik jee and Bhagchandani Jee:
Beautiful songs mentioned by both of you…really bemisaal and incomparable.
Rafi-Roshan is my own very favorite combination. I have loved music by Roshan Lal Nagrath right from his Malhar and Baanwre Nain days, where he has used only Mukesh.
But especially the Roshan-Sahir combination was heavenly, of which Rafi Saab was an intrinsic part…Taj Mahal, Barsaat Ki Raat, Chitralekha, Dooj Ka Chaand, Bahu Begum, Babar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onX9pNiuCO0)
Roshan-majrooh sultanpuri-Rafi gave us unforettable tunes from of Aarti, Bheegi Raat and Mamta.
Haan, I sort of agree with you Bhagchandani jee about the Wallah Kya Baat Hai song….aur yeh gaana suniye usi film se..kya aapko yeh bhi OPN lagta hai

RAFI SAAHEB NEEDS JUST 6000 ODD VOTES TO BE DECLARED THE NUMERO UNO SINGER. SO RAFI LOVERS ACT FAST. BE SWIFT AND THIS HAS TO BE ACHIEVED BY FEB 28, 2010.
PLEASE SEE POST NO 17 FOR MORE DETAILS.
happy voting to make the worlds finest singer the number one of all times.
for me the best rafi-roshon output is the following underrated ‘Babar’ song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r18Q8T5BlhQ&feature=related
Rafi sounded more melodious under roshan, compared to any other composer.
Post 17:
“…….you can vote as many times – every hour.”
this can’t be fair. it’s an insult to rafi. people expect better from you.
Souvik ji, very nice article on one of the greatest music director Hindi film music has ever seen. Almost 99% of the compostions of Roshan are brilliant. The unique style of Roshan was that the brief “pause” that used to happen in the interlude music or even in the mukhda or antara and then the song starts off brilliantly. I am not an expert in theoretical musin and hence unable to explain this clearly but can give some examples:
In the song baar baar mohe kya samjhaye payal ki jhankar, after the question”kya”? from Lata, Rafi continues “aa tohe sajni le chaloon nadiya ke paar” and the most brilliant piece is in the last stanza where the same part is played out so beautifully in flute. You would find this in many part of this song.
Another example is Dil jo na keha wohi raz-e-dil….in the part uchalo gulon ke tukde…ke rangeen fizaon mein….
Sorry Mr Somnath —although all other music directors you have mentioned are also great and in fact they are all my favourites also, Roshan is in the same league–number of films or commercial success is never a yardstick for judging an artist’s calibre. Jaidev composed for only 50-55 films in his entire career and similary Naushad for hardly 65-70 films but just what gems they had composed. Same with Roshan….
On behalf of all the rafian friends today 18th February I would like to wish a very very “happy marriage anniversary” to our rafian friend mr. prakash shah and mrs. Mallika shah.
Bhagwan kare ye jodi ta-qayamat salamat rahe !!!
Plz keep voting for “rafi sahab”…

Dear Shashankji, Binuji, Murthyji, Uttaraji and all the learned contributors of the forum,
Thanks for the comments made in respect of the relationship of Rafi and Roshan. In response to the comments of Somnathji, it can be said that the composition styles of giant composers cannot be compared. Naushad’s classical tunes having Lucknow gharana cannot be compared with Shankar Jaikishan’s westernized orchestration in Love in Tokyo or An Evening in Paris. Therefore Roshan’s use of raag pahari, use of sarangi, use of qawallies or ghazals creates a separate identity during the golden age.
He did not get great association of great producers like Madan Mohan also, so the classic music was composed in moderate budget films. Naushad was associated with Mehboob Khan, K. Asif, etc., Shankar Jaikishan worked with Raj Kapoor, OP Nayyar was associated with Guru Dutt, these were other factors for popularity other their immense talent.
Mohammad Rafi was the common factor for all these singers. So his combination most of the giant composers and lyricists of 50s and 60s require re-examination.
Souvik Chatterji

SO FAR PRIYA DUTTA AREA M.P. AND THE MUSLIM LEADERS (FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS) HAVE DONE NOTHING EXCEPT BEGGING FOR “votes” – come election times. they will be seen mostly in tree plantation drives, cricket matches, film releases and other sundry things – so that their pictures are flashed all around.
we must give our dead – dignity and comfort. it’s a serious issue and the rafi foundation will be writing to the heritage dept and cultural div. to maintain the graves of rafi and naushad as it is. it shuld be regarded as a “national monument.”

Very nice article, Sauvik Ji.
There was a film called Aji Bas Shukriya (1958). In this Film, Roshan composed one beautiful Rafi-Asha duet, “O Data O Data De Ham Ko Bhi Ek Pyaara Bangla, Arre Ham Bhi Tere Chahne Walon Mein Hain”.
Similarly, in 1959, there was a film called ‘Deep Jalta Rahe’. In this film, Roshan composed a fairly nice comical Rafi duet along with a literally unknown female singer called ‘Vijaya’. The song is : “Na Ro Bhai, Na Ro Bhai, Na Ro Bhai, Na, Kahin Chli Na Jaaye Meri Naukri, Na Ro Meri Jaan”!!!!
Then, there is that excellent and well-known solo from Film:Dooj Ka Chand (1964)! “Mehfil Se Uth Jaane Walon, Tum Logon Par Kya Ilzaam”.
All in all, Roshan would always be remembered as someone who could use Rafi Saab’s talent in the best possible way.
Venkat
thanks souvik ji. Roshan-Rafi songs- Maine shayad tumhe pehle bhi kabhi dekha hai (barsaat ki raat ), Mile na phool to kanton se dosti karli (same film as Mehlon ka raja mila ). Though not by Rafi- the soft “chhupa lo yoon dil me pyaar mera (film- Mamta-Hemant kumar-Lata),the High notes Ghazal -Zulme ulfat pe humen log sazaa dete hain (Tajmahal_-Lata)
dear souvik ji…
this is an excellent article…
thanks
Mr. nair,
I am shoked to read in times of india on dated 11th fab,10, that the graves of Madhubala , Naseem Banu , Shair ludhianvi and including Mohmmed Rafi has been disposed of their remaning and their tombs has been demolished to make space for new bodies.
This surprising act has been done by Juhu Muslim cemetery Authority without informing to their families.
Madhubala’s sister Madhur Bhushan has condemended this and said she is highly annoyed with the Authority.
every 31st july and 24th december hundred of people used to visit Rafi sahab’s greaver to pay their homege to the legendery singer. But now the above Authority has taken awaya this scope from the million of Rafi sahab’s fan acrrose the world.
I highly condemend it ————– Mohd . Zaman , Kolkata
Singers are never forgotten because their songs live. This is a way to remember them.
ANY OFFERING TO THE CAUSE OF GOLDEN ERA MUSIC IS JUST “PURE GOLD”.
ROSHAN SAAHEB IS MY FAVOURITE COMPOSER AND HIS SONGS ARE ALWAYS ON TOP OF THE MIND.
IF ROSHAN WOULD NOT HAVE HAD HIS FATAL MASSIVE HEART ATTACK DURING A FILM PARTY, HE WOULD HAVE HAD MORE STARS TO HIS CREDIT. TO SOME EXTENT, ROSHAN JUNIOR FILLED THE SLOT – BUT ROSHAN WAS ROSHAN.
LATA MANGESHKAR HAD APPOINTED ROSHAN AS THE COMPOSER FOR HER MAIDEN ANNCOUNCED MOVIE – which did not take-off.
the last recording of the song composed by roshan was done by his wife and the song could be “mahlon ka raja mila”…..
yes all the songs of golden era needs restoration and preservation souvik ji. like the graves of rafi, naushad which is under threat of demolition – for lack of space in cash rich mumbai.

souvik ji, thank you for such a brilliant article about the Rafi Sahab and Roshan combination. It was a pleasure reading this wonderful article and you are right in saying you need much more space to write about such people who have enriched our lives from the time we were children and I thank them for being part of my life. It is only people like you who keep their memories alive and appreciate the contribution they have made in our lives. Thank you once again
see this article did not impress me.
roshan as a music director was jusT o.k. rafi sahab sang many songs composed by him but he had more hit songs under naUshad,sj and sd burman.
They were far better composers than roshan.ALL PRODUCERS IGNORED ROSHAN BECAUSE SOME OF HIS TUNES WERE NOT NICE. WESTERNIZED MUSIC WAS POPULAR IN 60’S WHICH HE COULD NOT GIVE PROPERLY.
BUT SOME SONGS HE COMPOSED WERE VERY GREAT.
THIS IS JUST MY PERSONAL VIEW. I AM NOT CRITICIZING ANY MUSIC DIRECTOR. BUT OTHER MUSIC MUSIC DIRECTORS ARE BETTER THAN HIM.THIS IS THE FACT AND ACCEPCT IT. RAFI SAHAB SANG SOME OF THE GOLDEN SONGS UNDER HIM BUT TALAT MAHMMOD AND MUKESH SANG BETTER SONGS UNDER HIM.

Sauvikji, its always nice to read ur article. Roshanji and rafi sahab together is simply a mastepice and thanx to you for presenting these masterpice work by ur excellent writing and understanding of music.
however, I miss to see ur little son`s pic with u.
Please keep on writing.many many thanx and best wishes!
I agree with Mr. Souvik Chatterji that Roshan-Rafi combination was so great that it can not be framed in one article. Roshan’s music had something very special and different that can only be felt. In my opinion in terms of stature, Rashan saab was in the same league as Naushad, S.D. Burman, Shankar Jaikishan or Madan Mohan. He has blessed us with some finest composed songs. And in combination with Rafiji, he created magic.
I would like to add few more songs (of Roshan-Rafi combination) that missed mention in the article:
(1) Aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai…. (Nai umar ki nai fasal)
(2) Sapne jhare phool se mit chubhe shool se…. (Nai umar ki nai fasal)
(3) Gam-e-hasti se bas begaanaa hota… (Wallah kya baat hai)
(4) Khanke jo khanke kyoon khanke… (Wallah kya baat hai)
(5) Hum Intezar karenge tera qayaamat tak… (Bahu Begum)
(6) Maayus to hoon wade se tere…. (Barsaat Ki Raat)
(7) Mohabbat se dekha khafaa ho gaye hain.. (Bheegee Raat)
Of above mentioned songs, I would like invite readers’ opinion on that wonderful song ‘Khanke jo knanke kyoon khanke jab raat ko….’ from film ‘Wallah kya baat hai’ sung by Rafi and Asha. For many years I was under the impression that the song is composed by O.P. Nayyar as the music is so much O.P Nayyar-like.
Apart of that legendary Barsaat ki Raat qawali, Roshan saab gave us many more qawalis. ‘Chandi saa badan sone ki nazar..’ (Taj Mahal), Parda uthe salaam hio jaaye.. (Dil Hi to hai), Nigaahen milane ko ji chahataa hai…. (Dil hi to hai) etc etc.
Souvikji great article by you once again. The songs from Barsaat Ki raat are unforgettable ones and so also from aarti. many thanks for coming up with article on roshan sahab.

sovik ji it is a great article. it is very sad that roashan did not get much filmfare awards. but the songs with rafi and roashan were really great
because of rafi sahab roashan really got a great path. all the songs were really great. but roashan did not give much songs to mahendra kapoor that was very sad. in the 60’s op nayyar, shankar jaikishan, naushad ,sd burman,lp,rd burman, etc were dominating. but still the songs roashan produced were diamond stones. his only bad luck was his films were not a big hit.
but still roashan ji is immortal and always live in our heart
