By Vijay Bavdekar, Nagpur
Every Rafi fan remembers many melodious songs of Rafi, rendered under the baton of Great Music Directors like Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, S D Burman, Madan Mohan, Roshan, O P Nayyar, Ravi, Usha Khanna and the long list goes upto Bappi Lahiri. It will be very much interesting for us to take a deep dive into the ocean of Rafi’s songs to collect the gems produced by less remembered Music Directors or those who produced sparkling songs in their small career and disappeared like a firefly.
The few examples are as below. Let us start from

And the list goes on.. Actually these music directors & those whose names are not mentioned, have given many more melodious songs of Rafi which could not be mentioned here.
dear anonymous refi saab didi not sing for malyalam films perhaps he was too occupied with the hindi, urdu punjabi songs or may be he did not know devnagri calligraphiy. he used to sing hindi songs using urdu calligraphy . dear vijay your knowledge is very vast in this field it is glad that you are giving the rafi fans a real treat thru internet go on it wikll open new pleathora
sunil puranik nagpur
Thanks Mr Vijay for such a apinstaking & dedicated compilation. The list will go on……..
Anonymous people must not be allowed to post here. Hiding identities & trying to degrade Rafi Sahab with their jibes??? At least the language used should be befitting to the reverence displayed by such large contributors here. Rafi Sahabs lack of interest? U deserve a K…
Pran Sahib has passed on. Another gentleman for whom Rafi Sahib crooned.
It is very difficult to choose gems from ocean . The arena is huge .
THANKS VIJAY ji for the clarification re: Navkalpana nav roop se, a classic song.
Many of songs mentioned in the list already have been featured in our Live Musical Shows of Romantic Rafi or Shaam E Rafi Saaheb in Mumbai.
on july 20th we will hold Shankar Jaikishan Part III and some odd numbers are being incuded.
thanks for the list and the corrections.

I ALWAYS LOVED RAFI SAHAB’S SONGS
Vijay Ji, Great list. Thanks for compiling.
I will also like to see Ramlal composed songs from the movie Sahra, “Tum to pyaar ho” With Lata Ji. One of my all time favorite songs.
Can any one tell me why Rafi Sab had not sung in Malayalam films? Is it because of the presence of better voices in the language, or his lack of interest?
NICE INFORMATIVE ARTICLE..MISTAKE OF QUOTING ‘ KAHDO KOI NA KARE..’ BHARAT VYAS’ IMMORTAL POETRY IN RAFI’S POWERFUL VOICE, FROM GUNJ UTHI SHEHNAI AND NOT SEHRA, ALREADY RECTIFIED.. SHYAM JI GHANSHYAM JI’S SONG ‘APNI AANKHON ME BITHA KAR KOI IKRAAR KAROON, MAY FIND A PLACE IN THE LIST..
Indeed mr.nair, but”navkalpana nav roopse”this classic claasical number is from film”mrig trishna”-(1975)whose composer is ‘shambhoo sen’and not great pt.ravishankarji who scored music for ”godaan”.
Nakli nawab 1962 MD Babul
Cheda jo dil ka fasana from the film Nakli
in your list pl add the song composed by Sardar Mallik for the film Naag Mohini 1963 Hamne kya pyaar kiya lyricrs Bharat vyas
Binu Ji what a song you brought to my mind, ‘Mere mehboob kahin aur milakar mujhse’ .I had read some place that after the release of Leader’s “Ek shahanshah ne banwake haseen Tajmahal”, poet Sahir penned this song for the film Ghazal to show what his thoughts were with regards to the monument of Love. Both films were released in the year 1964.What a thought provoking song and what a dignified way to put in one’s views.
Very nice thought Vijayji, however although some of these MD’s may have had few films against their names but they were not lesser known as their songs were chartbusters then and even now they are worth gems eg Iqbal Qureshi, C.Arjun, SN Tripathi , Sapan Jagmohan. I consider myself lucky to have been brought up in the 80s when radio was still a powerful medium and unlike the various FM channels of today we were able to listen to music of all singers and MD’s without any bias on Vividh Bharati.
Vijaj Ji…..
Will you Not consider the Rafi saaheb gem:
“Navakalpana navroop se rachana rachi jab naar ki” Composing by Pt.Ravi Shankar – another veteran less remembered as a musician. He also gave music for Movie Godaan with another exquisite number from our hero.
=================================================
A rare number from Madan Mohan :
Yesterday after a music audition session, i just mentioned a song from movie Ghazal. A rarely heard number. Within minutes, this song was downloaded from You tube and our group was amazed by this number.
Rafi Saaheb crooning : “Meri Mehboob Kahin Aur Mila kar”….( About Taj Mahal)
Ek shhanshan ne daulat ka sahara lekar, Hum garibon ka udaya hai majaak,
Mere Mehboob Kahin Aur Mila Kar ……Sahirs words were rejected by Naushad ji its said and so it was given to Madan Mohan who did splendid work with it.
The lyrics and composing is Rare, Very Very Rare. Available on youtube.
No music lover must miss the song and its Lyrics.

i agree with you vinodji, but i have qouted few examples.if you look back into fifitees you will find”vatan ki rahme vatanke naujawan shaheed ho”from ”shaheed”composed by ghulam hyder,”aye dil tujhko neende na aayi tamam raat”from’shahnaaz’composed by ameerbai karnataki..and more..if you step in sixties you will find melodious”yeh raat yeh fizayen ”from batwara composed by s.madan…and more ,and you take a round in seventies you will enjoy a beautiful gazal”baithe baithe dil e nadaan”from ‘maykhana ‘composed by bhooshan and more like shamji ghanshyamji ,ratnadeep hemraj rtc etc.so that’s why i said the list will be a long one, thanks for your response vinodji.

R. Ishara ji and one more duet song of Rafi sahab and asha ji is recorded by sh. BRIJ JI in his own film Sanjhi, this film is never released.

vinod mehru
You are right Mr.Nair.The Sehra song is “taqdeer ka fasana jaakar kise sunayen”and not “kehdo koi na karen yahan pyaar”,i don’t know how i made mistake.Thanks.
A very interesting and informative piece. It is because of such write ups and comments that I visit this website several times everyday. Wasn’t Ghulam Mohammad the MD of Pakeeza? Pran Sahib I heard had refused his Filmfare award because Ghulam Sahib wasn’t given one. Anil Sahib I believe is a much celebrated and respected MD as well. I would appreciate additional information about the afore-mentioned music geniuses.
good article………But, Kehdo koyee na kare yahan pyar is Not from Sehra dear friend.
Its from Goonj Uthi Shehnai and music is by Vasant Desai.
This composer brought in Vani Jairam in movie Guddi who gave a big challenge to the existing singers.
After a recording with Vani Jairam, Rafi Saaheb commented: ” Kya gaati hai yeh ladki ” .
Tragically, Vasant Desai ji lost his life in a gruesome Lift accident in South Mumbai.
Anil Vishwas was top music director of 1940’s or we can say he was at top but he did a mistake not using Mohd Rafi and Naushad ji take over ……..
