Rain songs by Mohammed RafiIt was a CLASSIC rain song sung by Rafi Saheb with beautiful composition by Roshan Saheb on extraordinary lyrics by Sahir Ludhyanvi from the film Barsat Ki Raat with perfect lip harmonization by Bharat Bhushan on whom good numbers of Rafi gems had been picturized and who came to spotlight of stardom with golden voice of Rafi Saheb. The said song was twice in the film, one solo by Rafi Saheb and one duet by RafI-Lata picturised on Bharat Bhushan and Madhubala. There was another classical rain song in the film “Garjat Barsat Sawan Aayo Re” which was sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot.

The soft romantic number “Pyar Hua Iqraar Hua Hai Pyar Se Phir Kou Darta Hai Dil” from “Sri 420”(1955) sung by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar is the milestone rain song of the Hindi Film Industry. The song had an everlasting melody by Shankar-Jaikishan, which depicted emotional chemistry between Raj Kapoor and Nargis under an umbrella and showing Raj Kapoor’s three real life son in a passing shot. As a Producer-Director, Raj Kapoor was the pioneer of the trend of rain songs in Hindi Cinema and his heroines from Nargis to Mandakini were all soaked in the rainfall or under a waterfall in his every film. “Dam Dam Diga Diga, Mausam Bhiga Bhiga” was another popular rain song picturised on Raj Kapoor sung by Mukesh Saheb from Monmohan Desai’s debut direction Chalia.

After “Pyar Hua Iqraar Hua”, “Rimjim Ke Tarane Leke Aayee Barsat” was the second landmark rain song of Hindi Film Industry from Kala Bazar (1958) picturised on evergreen actor Dev Anand and Waheeda Rahman under an Umbrella on a Mumbai Street. It was also one of the best background duets by Mohd. Rafi and Geeta Dutt. “Tu Kahan Yeh Bata Ish Nachili Raat Main” another rain song by Rafi Saheb well picturized on Dev Anand in a rainy night from the film Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) under composition of S. D. Burman and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri.

Rain songs are the good symbolic of Love and Romance in Hindi Film between the Hero and Heroine. Rafi Saheb had sung a good number of RAIN SONGS of HFM, most of which were Rafi-Lata duets. A brief account of this category as follows: –

The longing romantic number “Dil Tera Diwana Hai Sanam” by Rafi-Lata from Dil Tera Diwana (1962) was a grand tinkle by Shankar-Jaikishan and the song was picturised in a legitimate outdoor location with fabulous performances by SHAMMI KAPOOR and MALA SINHA drenched in rainfall.

The popular romantic number “Rim Jhim Ke Geet Sawan Gaye, Haye Bhigi Bhigi Raaton Main” a duet by Raf-Lata from Mohan Kumar’s Aanjana (1969) picturised on RAJENDRA KUMAR and BABITA SHIVDASANI in a rainy night. Another Rafi-Lata duet “Yeh Mausam Bhiga Bhiga Hai Hawa Bhi Taaza Taaza Hai, Kuo Na Maslega Dil Mera Tumko Pane Ka Irada Hai” from Sridhar’s Dharti (1970) was picturised on RAJENDRA KUMAR and WAHEEDA REHMAN in the bay of Sea.

“Badara Sayee Ke Jhoolee Par Gayee Haye Mele Lagee Hai Mach Gayee Dhoom” from the film AAYA SAWAN JHOOM KE picturised on DHARMENDRA and ASHA PAREKH with a group in a stunning garden. He-man Dharmendra came across very romantic in the song. Another rain song “Kuch Kehta Hai Saawan” from Raj Khosla’s MERA GAON MERA DESH by Rafi-Lata was also picturised on DHARMENDRA and ASHA PAREKH.

“Kabhi Kabhi Aaisa Bhi Tu Hota Hai Zindegi Main Rahoon Main Chalte Chalte Rahi Khoo Gayee Bekhudi Main” by Rafi-Lata picturised on JEETENDRA and HEMA MALINI in a MOTOR CAR superbly from the film WARIS. Another most popular Rafi-Lata duet “Haye Ra Haye Need Nahin Aayee Dil Main Tu Samay Aaya Pyar Bhara Mausam Deewana Deewana” from HUMJOLI was picturised on JEETENDRA and LEENA CHANDRAVAKAR in a dazzling countryside location with a bullock cart. The song deeply portrays the JUMPING JACK image of JEETENDRA, which he got with Rafi Saheb’s “CUCKOO” in the film FARZ (1967) followed by WARIS, JIGRI DOST, CARAVAN etc. with swift Rafi gems. Another romantic Rafi-Lata duet “Ek Baat Poochhon” from KATH PUTLI was also picturised on JEETENDRA and MUMTAZ in a rain sequence.

The Rafi-Lata duet from DO RAASTE (1969) “Chup Gaye Saare Nazare” which also exposed the best chemistry between superstar RAJESH KHANNA and MUMTAZ in rainfall in the last stanza of the song, who were the well-liked pair of Hindi Cinema. Another song of this category “Gore Rang Pe Itna Ghooma Na Kaar” sung by Kishore-Lata from the film ROTI was also beautifully picturised on them.

Prakash Mehra’s first directorial venture MELA(1971) starring the real life brothers Sanjay Khan, Feroz Khan with Mumtaz had a hunting Rafi-Lata duet “Rut Hai Milan Ki Saathi Mere Aare” of this category and the song was marvelously picturised on FEROZ KHAN and NIKITA in a rainy night in the paddy field.

“Simti Hui Yeh Ghadiyan Phir Se Na Bikhar Jayee” from the film CHAMBAL KI KASAM picturised on RAAJ KUMAR and MOUSUMI CHATTERJEE in a River Boat.

Rafisaheb,ye woh naam hai ji par sangit ko hamesha naaz raha hai, unki awaz sidhe dil tak janewali thi, real melody thi, in mahanAtma ke jitne bhi kisse sune hai usse unko sirf karne ko hi haath uthta hai hamara shayad naseeb nahi tha unhe rubaru dekhne ka, iss Nature se muze hamesha ye shikayat rahegi ke usne hamare RAFISAHEB ko hamse hamesha k liye chhinkar kar le gayi, magar nature ko ye pata nahi k RAFISAHEB hamare dil me hamesha se rahe aur hamare marte dam tak rahenge, Zindagi to bewafa hai, ek din thukrayegi, maut mehbuba hai apne saath lekar jayegi, ye geet RAFISAHEB ne hi gaaya hai shayad iss mehbuba k baare me unhe pehle se pata tha, mai mere pariwar ki taraf se RAFISAHEB ko SHHRADDHANJALI arpit karta hu.

  11. The film SAWAN also had a good Rafi – Shamshad Begum duet “Bheega Bheega Pyaar Ka Sama”. SHOR had “Paani Re Paani”, Mukesh – Lata duet. Who can forget KK’s “Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhagisi” from CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI. Then ROTI KAPDA AUR MAKKAN had Lata’s “Hai Hai Ye Majboori” very sensuously picturised on Zeenat Aman. “Raton Ko Chori Chori” by Asha from MOHABBAT ZINDAGI HAI was another beauty.

Respected Binu Nair Ji and all other respected Rafi Lovers

Thanks a lot for all congratulations and appreciations. All are requested to post some clue/ data to my e-mail for SECOND PART OF RAIN SONGS to be published in July.

The climate of Assam is always in balance and rainfall started here from Feb/ March. In the last fortnight there was continuous rain here. Yesterday also, it was very hot in daytime due to genuine sunlight and night heavy rain. Thus, rain is a regular feature of Green Assam as said well by Sri Anmol Singh Ji and people of Assam also very simple, down to earth, straightforward and very facilitator to all.

    Thanking you all once again.

    With very best regards
    Biman Baruah

    Mr. Biman Baruah Ji,

You have done excellent analysis on rain songs. Possibly since u are from Assam, hence there is no person better than u in this forum you can feel the heaviest rain on earth.

To add a few more rain songs

Barkha Rani Zaraa Jamke Baorso – Mukesh

Rim Jhim Gire Saawan – KK / Lata
Ek Chatri Or Hum Hai Do – Rafi/Asha

  18. Ramesh Patel says:

Mohammed Rafi has the best rain songs in bollywood.

One such song comes to mind is from the movie Farz ki Jung (1989) “Phool ka shabab kya” picturised on Govinda and Neelam in a water fall. Also this was the last song of Mohammed Rafi saab’s in a movie released nine years after his sad demise.

  19. K.J.Ravi says:

One more fabulour rain song rendered superbly by Rafi Sahab is from the film Do Khiladi (1976, lyrics by Gauhar Kanpuri and music by Usha Khanna). During the course of the song, the manner in which Rafi Sahab lets his voice soar and then dip is something extraordianry.

  20. Ghulam Mujtaba says:

Nice Article I may request to add “Tum jo Milgai Hu Tu Yeh” film Hansty Zakham composed by Madan Mohan which is extra ordinary composed. However, an other outstanding duet with Lata ji, is “Yeh Mausum Bhiga Bhiga Hey Hawa Bi Ziada Ziada hey” Film “Dharti” is superb “specially when Rafi Sahib punched “Ijazat ho tu merey sakar key pehlo mein aajao” and 2nd one is “Mery sanso mein ghul jao” is wounderfull love passion. All other gems are noteable. Please keep it up.

    Thanks.

GHULAM MUJTABA / LAHORE (old home town of Rafi Sahib)

  21. anil cherian says:

No mention of ‘aaja re aa zarra……’?, a classic in this genre. There is also this ‘O mere dil… mere humdum….’. Can someone please tell me who is the female singer in the latter duet. Is it Latajee herself?

  22. The article missed one of the most popular rain songs in the Indian Film Industry – “Roop Tera Mastana” from Aradhana. Another song was from Kraanti – “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi”.

  23. Binu Nair says:

in the sultry and hot days of may month, it’s really heartening and cooling to read about rainy day songs of rafi saaheb, ably compelled by researcher and rafi fan biman baruah. the second part ought to come out in july – when we are all actually enjoying the rains.
