Mujeh Chu Rahi Hein

This article is written by Ms. Chandni

Mujeh Chu Rahi HeinLove and romance are always entwined to music. Music has the power to create illusions stronger than reality. This song from the movie ‘Swayamvar’, sung by the great Mohd Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar creates an unfathomable magic. Picturized on Sashi Kapoor and Mausumi Chaterjee, this song sounds very very sensuous. Even with Mausumi Chaterjee is fully draped in a very elegant black sari, she seems to be just looking as bootylicious as any of our so-called modern divas. Even the not so romantic and boyish looking Sashi Kapoor creates a spell with his eyes.

Shashi Kapoor, Maushumi Chatterji in SwayamvarThe strange thing about this song is even though it was shot in a very conservative Indian cinema of 1980s, without any sort of exposure, and only with the lyrics and music, it is able to touch us with a new sensation, each time you hear it. The young heart of any pair of lovers would melt with the wordings that gel sensuousness and immortal spirit of love at the same time. Rajesh Roshan, known for this imitable talent in composing great love songs may not have really touched many hearts with this number, but the truth remains that this song has a been written and sang with a completely new way of mingling love and senses.

The star cast or the picturization is very much lively. May be many would have preferred it to have been shot for a rain song creating a feast for your senses. But the director and music director must have decided to set a new trend by making the naive and cute Mausumi look like a sensuous diva, where as Sashi Kapoor to have just got up from a hallucination or a superior kind and imagining Mausumi to be a love fairy. The song, also keeping in mind the very Indian audience who condemn any love that doesn’t speak about a lifetime of togetherness, tied in the knot of marriage. So, this song does see the main characters promising each other of a life long relation and prophesizing each as the destiny of the other.

Love doesn’t seem to notice any sorts of barriers. This young couple also goes with the flow of the greatest known emotion on earth. The young and restless actors portray the invitation of love for crossing all limits and submitting to the power of love. Love makes days brighter and nights full of stars, spreading the fragrance everywhere, this songs captures it in the very soul. When words do not seem to work or seem to say so very less, eyes come to the rescue and the hero understand the shy and delicate heroine’s dilemma and asks her to speak with her eyes. The shy heroin understands everything and says with a naughty smile to speak less with the eyes as they make her blush. They promise to walk on the road of love till they find solace with each other’s company.

Shashi Kapoor, Maushumi Chatterji in SwayamvarHow can we being Indians just not love a song, which is so very Indian yet so very very sensuous and sultry? We dare see a cute to coquettish Mausumi Chaterjee, singing and swirling with Sashi Kapoor. If you want to please someone with your unique choice of retro romantic music, then go for this one. This will definitely speak volumes about your sensibility and sensuality.

This song is very melodious and great Rafi saheb and Lataji made this a treat to listen and enjoy. There are some other very melodious songs, which I would like you to comment on – like- Theheriye hosh me aa loon,to chale jayeega (mohabbat isko kehte hein), Sun sun sun o gulabi kali(sawan bhadon).dil pukaare,aa re aa re(jewel thief).among many more. Your observations are superb. Congrats

rafi, simply superb, this song is really touching and evergreen.
nowdays we really miss such a class, and also for a song to be evergreen every thing must be perfect just see the actors sashi kapoor (title:english man) and charming nanda both perfect for the treat. And off-course background it Rafi ji and lata ji

    DEAR MYK ( REF : POST-18 )

I TOO AGREE WITH YOU REGARDING YOUR COMMENTS RELATED TO
THE SONG ” KYA MAUSAM HAI …. ” FROM THE FILM ‘ DOOSRA AADMI ‘.
THE SONG AND THE MUSIC OF IT IS REALLY A FANTASTIC ONE .
THE SONG REACHES IT’S PEAK OF BEAUTY THROUGH RAFI SAHAB’S ENTRY !

REGARDING THE SONG OF ” HEERE ZEVRAT ” I HAVE NOT HEARD IT.
I AM MENTIONING ANOTHER SONG ” TERE DIL MEIN…. ” FROM THE FILM
‘ AAPKE DEEWANE ‘ -IN WHICH 3 LEGENDS ( RAFIJI, LATAJI & KISHOREJI ) SINGING TOGETHER . IT’S MUSIC TOO IS BY RAJESH ROSHAN .
IT HAS ALSO EXCELLENT MUSIC .

    BEST REGARDS/A.T.M. SALIM

  6. Thanks to all Rafians for reminding me of the movie name “Raja Saab” of Rafi-Lata duet “Humne Aajse Tumhe”. Incidentally, the movie had two more Rafi solos – title song “Raju Ka Hai Ek Khwab” in two versions, happy and sad and another solo of Rafiji with Saathi “Kisi Meharuban Ki Nazar Dhoondate Hai”, but the duet was simply top class.

Dear ATM Salim (Ref. Post 16):

‘Naraazgi yeh aap ki” is another amazing duet by Rafi-Suman under RR. The entry by Rafi saab is mindblowing, no other singer could make such an impact entering songs. The song has a nice tabla beat throughout, the orchestration is fantastic, and the melody is beautiful.

I agree with ztas77, Rafi would have produced so many more classics in the 80’s, the Swayamvar and Unees Bees songs are proof of that.

How about the best ever triad in HFM history (in my opinion), ‘Kya mausam hai’ from Doosra Aadmi, Rafi’s entry is out of this world, perfectly set up by RR.

Also, you are correct, in the film Swayamvar, there are two versions of ‘Mujhe chu rahi hai’, one by Rafi-Lata, and another by two other singers.

By the way, there is a Rafi-Lata duet entitled ‘Tumhare Liye’ from the unreleased film Heere Zevraat, composed by Rajesh Roshan.

the song” hamne aaj se tumhe yeh naam de diya” is fron raaja saab, music by kalyanji anandji. it is a failed shashi kapoor nanda starrer.
the whole movie is remembered just for this one song.

  15. ztas77 says:

Not only this song is an everlasting classic but it sounds so fresh even today. One of Rajesh Roshan’s great classics. Great composition, Great Lyrics and featuring the greatest of singers, Lata & Rafi. Its so unfortunate Rafi passed away at that time , imagine how many more 80s classics there would have been by Rafi.
I often ask myself, why was Rafi taken from us so early! Strange how Rafi, Mukesh & Kishore left us in their 50’s.

  16. myk says:

I didn’t mention this before, but a great article by Ms. Chandni, keep up the excellent work !.

  17. myk says:

This is one of the best Rafi-Lata duets ever, such a beautiful song composed by Rajesh Roshan. Rafi holds center-stage in this gem, which has outstanding orchestration, and a fantastic guitar that is used throughout the song as part of the rhythm (as well as in the interludes), along with the trademark RR percussion and congos. Excellent lyrics by Gulzar, this song is one of his best as well. Rajesh Roshan and Rafi had a great association, and RR was one of Rafi’s best later day music directors.

I would like to mention another beautiful Rafi song composed by Junior Roshan and that is ‘Teri Palkon Mein Kajal’ (with Suman) from the film Jay-Vijay, awesome composition.

  18. Hussein Sheikh says:

Nice article and beautiful song sung by Rafi Saheb with Lataji. There are many many duets by Rafi Saheb and Lataji, not possible to mention here. Rafi Saheb shines. melodiousrafi@yahoo.com

The song is written by Gulzar, perhaps one of the best composition done by Rajesh Roshan. Rafi Saab is too good here.

  22. What a coincidence. Yesterday being Sunday, I was listening to some Rafi – Lata duets on my PC and I heard this song. I also heard one more song which used to be very popular when it was released in the late sixties or so. The Rafi – Lata duet “Humne Aajse Tumhe Ye Naam De Diya, Janeman, Janeman, Janejaan, Jaanejan, Is Bahane Aapne Paigam De Diya, Janeman, Janeman, Janejaan, Jaanejan”. Such a beautiful song, some how it had slipped from my memory, but since yesterday, the song is lingering with me. I am not able to recollect the name of the movie, can anybody help me out?

  23. Dr. Khaja Aliuddin says:

Ms. Candni ji, Congratulations for such a well written article. This duet is no doubt a romantic one. Rafi and Lata are superb here.
    Long live rafi and Lata.
    With regards,
