Concert in memory of legendary Indian singer

INDIAN music group Doha Waves will hold a concert in memory of legendary Indian singer Mohamed Rafi at the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) on August 31. It is being held in association with the ICC and Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF). Doha Bank is the main sponsor of the three-hour event that is being held as part of the 60th Indian Independence Day celebrations, to be organised by the forum.
It is for the 11th consecutive year that Waves, which consists of some of the best known singers of the expatriate community, is hosting an event in memory of the phenomenal Indian singer, who passed away on July 31, 1980.
The organisers of the concert said the proceeds from the event would go to the humanitarian activities of the ICBF, which works under the auspices of the Indian embassy.
Mohamed Thoyyib, organising secretary of the Doha Waves, said at a press conference held at the ICC on Thursday the group would hold similar music concerts in aid of the Indian community’s welfare activities in future too.
Indian embassy official Ravindra Jaiswal, chief patrons of the music group, ICC president Hassan Chougule, Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF) chief Nilangshu Dey, Doha Bank official K V Samuel, ICC cultural secretary Mosafi Mossamil and organiser Vijay Seshan were present at the press conference.
To mark the ticket sales, Jaiswal handed over a ticket to Samuel at the ceremony.
The concert ‘Rafi ki Yadein’ brings together a galaxy of performers in the Indian expatriate community for yet another occasion.
Besides Thoyyib, the other singers to enliven the evening include Saleem Pavaratty, Abdul Khair, Imtiaz, Rajeev Saxena, Aishwarya Murali, Parvati Chandran and Nadeer Abdul Salam among others.
A live orchestra will back up the performers. The event is scheduled for 7.30pm. Indian Ambassador Dr George Joseph will be the chief guest.
Indian Airlines is the associate sponsor of the concert.
