Disappointing Sonu Nigam at London on Rafi songs

Sonu Nigam, much to my expectations, sang Rafi songs very normally. In fact, I would rate him much much lower than what he used to sing when he came in about 13years ago through Saregama. His voice has conspicuously deteriorated with his singing all types of medlee/Hindi pop songs and of that sort.
He was always a fast singer and now-a-days with his singing Hindi pop and medlees, he is even faster. His first song Yaad Na Jaaye from Dil Ek Mandir was like traveling in Nilgiri Express, while the original song by Rafi is slow deep expressive and extremely emotional. This was the general pattern in which Sonu has been singing these days with his impatient attitude to sing slow numbers very fast is very painful. “Muje Teri Mohabbat Ka” from Aap Aaye bahar Aaye” was again a deep number with full of rhythm and Sonu sang like a breeze..
Rafi songs are predominantly slow with rhythm and with so much of labour in his singing – be it depth, dard, range, voice modulation, expression, emotion and what have you.
I was however amazed with the orchestral excellence with the british national giving interlude music to the T. The 75 piece orchestra was par excellence and I could not find anything different from the original music by the composers. Indian orchestra bands doing shows should take this as an example to see how well the symphony was directed and delivered. Another wonderful experience – nothing like original and natural instruments – playing with a 30 team violin for the right interlude music was way way ahead of playing the same tunes today on a key board.
I thoroughly enjoyed the orchestra and was really a treat.
THERE IS NOTHING TO COMPARE THE LEGENDS.BUT HOWEVER I CERTAINLY FEEL RAFI SAHAB IS THE GREATEST SINGER THAT INDIA HAS EVER PRODUCED.

Sonu Nigam has an atrocious voice. I wonder how can some people even like what he sings. He is just hyped celebrity with almost no talent in him. Sonu certainly does not derseve the limelight he hogs. There are so many talented singers in our country. We have heard enough of Sonu Nigam’s grunting. Now we deserve to hear a good voice.

You are right. Sonu Nigam does not have it in him. Rafi was par excellence. Infact Shabbir Kumar and Mohammed Aziz did remind us of Rafi saab.
But it is insulting to compare the legendary singer with somebody like Sonu Nigam. Truly Sonu sucks.

I think that “You”, whoever has written this post above does not, for any reason, have a right to criticize someone as great as “Sonu Nigam”. It will be very foolish of you to even say a word against this legend. I, myself, have been a critic of him….but soon i realized as i researched…listened to the vast variety of singing he has done, literally i felt he has even surpassed Rafiji even many ways . Comparing him with rafi sahab doesnt make any sense. I mean why do we want him to completely impersonate somone else. ‘Prem’, above, has said it right that Sonu sings rafi`s song to keep alive rafi sahab`s legacy today. Afterall, No one on this earth can or has sung rafiji better than sonunigam.
Sonu Nigam, is a vey versatile singer and assuredly, the best singer India has today, considering the versatility he possesses. Besides, he is probably the only singer who is equally talented in other things too. So, please rethink it when you utter a word against him!!!

I have learned my music by hearing rafi songs so has sonu( That is what he says ) I saw a programe live on stage when sonu was just 15 years of age and he sand “Madhuban Mein radhika Naache Re” . Th whole Audience was spell bound. I too was surprised to hear a singer (just 15 yrs age ) and singing a very difficult song of rafi live on stage.
He was later on asked how old r u he replied 15 yrs Wow 15 yrs singing like that. We must encourage new talent particularly those who dont just sing but know music.
Sonu is a fresh talent an ardent fan of rafi . He has a big photograph of Rafi in his house and he worships his god.
That is for me end of it no fight he loves rafi we love rafi.

My dear friend Mr Ashok Desai Saabs comments seems to have been taken very sharply & seriously by Mr Binu Nairjee & Savitaa Garciajee.
Friends and all the ardent admirers of dear Rafi Saab — I would like to inform you that Mr Ashok Desai has been one my greatest & best friend and in fact is a far more better voilinist than me and hence he is still in demand in the music industry though I have retired long back.

I disagree that whenever Rafi-saab sang for RD in the mid-70’s, he sounded shrill and different under him compared to other composers.
Pancham brought out Rafi’s vocals very nicely, in all the times they combined together (as did all composers).
Also, RD had very high respect for Rafi, and regretted the fact that he could not work more with the greatest singer of all time.
However, the two still have many songs together for music lovers to cherish.
KK fans have nothing to write in their idol’s site! Now they are here to insult Rafi Saheb. KK fans should first learn manners, which they do not have. Such comments are expected from KK fans only… all sadak chhaap.

Just for the record of these addle brained morons this is what KK had to say about Rafisaab. ” I can only sing a song in one way, Rafisaab could sing in several ways”. KK also admited that it was beyond him to sing Nafrat Ki duniya ko from Haathi Mere Saathi.

with reference to ur post no. 448. i cud not agree with u more, those who like can never like any other singer he was n is the epitome of singing. even though he was a genius he was very humble. i read somewhr on this site tht his voice did not suit dharmender fot this argument i wud say tht just listen to the song “mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse” i have never seen a song befitting an actor tht well also the expresssions of dharmenderji were amazing a complete visual treat. also i read tht dharmji sidelined rafisaab in the 70s wch i feel is not true it cud be bcoz of rdb being the md who was a star in his own rite so wud not want intereference from anyone,so it is quite possible tht dharmjis pleas mite have fallen on deaf/baised ears.
one thing wch i have noticed n i dont know how many other ppl noticed whnevr rafisaab sang under rdb (in mid 70s) he wud make him sound very different rafisaabs voice wud come out shrill n without the honey flow effect while at the same time under other mds rafisaab wud sound his original self. also i feel tht rdb did not have enuf respect for rafisaab so im glad tht rafisaab did not sing many songs under his direction.

I agree fully that we must refrain from commenting on all the so called adverse comments by fans of other singers. if we can curtail our responses to these, possibly the website will be spared the mudslinging matches that we get to see. in fact, i do not even read some of these comments and the war of words that keeps on surfacing and i find that the topic or the article itself is made irrevelant by most and wish that this ‘one upmanship’ gives way to saner and mature opinion making on topics relevant to rafi sahab and his songs.
In some posts (including post no. 456 by Ashok Desai) the song ‘Man mora baawraa…’ picturized on Kishore Kumar is stated to be from movie ‘Kalpana’ which is wrong. The song is from film ‘Raagini’.

Nice message sir. As you said, when nadkarni ji’s irrelevant comments were questioned, some rafi fans were on fire. (specially when one music lover here questioned nadkarni ji’s wrong comments on someones’s parents which were totally irrelevant) Moreover, so called some rafi fans did not mention anything against such baseless comments of Mr. Nadkarni ji, thus, indirectly supporting his comments.
For disputes, the problem mainly is with rafi fans ( no offence please). They simply quote statements such as no singer can ….. rafi alone can……….. thus indirectly giving a silent impression of belittling other great singers. When somebody raises that point war brokes out. They would better remember rafi quoting in encyclopaedia on manna dey as ” people listen to rafi songs but I (rafi) listen to Manna dey songs”
Several times questions were raised ; what range and notes did rafi touch, which other singers have not been able to touch – no answer by rafi fans. This is only an instance where there is a scope for dispute. Moreover fans of other singers have not interfered in any way – interference came only when such comments such as no singer……… etc. are made by rafi fans and naturally there will be a response for that as this is a public forum.

Why you do not address yourself as a music lover and human being. No body is bothered whether you practise christianity or islam or hinduism. That is purely personal. I appreciate you for the time spent and posting for such a lengthy message and the same time have pity on you for making some exagerrated paras. I read in some of your posts , you were born in mid 80’s – You do not know what exactly happened before that, you can only infer from the comments of learned people who know the exact truth and you cannot dispute that. Further the words farishta, god etc. I had already disputed earlier. These are all problematic statements due to which all this started. When rafi praises ghantasala, kishore kumar or manna dey or others, what is the wrong if their fans praise their respective singers in response to the comments of rafi fans. What is the wrong in that. When such questions are raised by fans of other singers, reply is do not compare with rafi (when rafi fans themselves start comparison first such as no singer………..) When rafi fans do not accept that the result is war only. It has to beremembered that in the music world, rafi ji is a role model singer and one of the appreciated singers along with other greats. The discussion should be in these lines ( Do not take this as preaching, otherwise again fight will start) You will then see how fair and smooth the issues will be.
Savita ji, i can give a glaring example in this regard – you can refer binu nair ji’s comment in post 609 in true voice forum and the subsequent response in post 611 by an experienced classical musician. Please do not dismiss it as mere example, you will know the essence of it.

Refer post 456 of Mr Ashok Desai-I fully agree withyou sir. This site is now becoming too much obesessed with Rafi-Kishore war which is very sad. I personally love Rafi and his songs and there is not a single day when I do not think of him/listen to his songs. But I would never write/feel anything denigrating other singers like KK/Mukesh/Mannadey/Mahindra kapoor/Talat/Lata/Asha/Jesudoss/SPB etc…
I would request all Rafi fans to kindly ignore whenever some over-zealous person writes bad about Rafi sahab. I have mentioned this in my other posts also.

The Mohammed Rafi – Kishore Kumar war in this beautiful site is profusely the hand-work of the so-called politicians who claim to be their fans. My dear friend from Mumbai Dr Suhas Paranjape has sent me a sms message informing me about this most stupid gimmick ever played by these dirty politicians who probably have no business or work of their own and are just interested in maligning the image of this great site and also tarnish the image of these 2 great legends. Indeed when I surfed this site and this article I was totally shocked & surprised beyond my doubt and imagination that such a war can be created for exactly no fault or purpose whatsoever. I remember of having posted my single comment on my friend, philosopher and guide Mr Sandeep D Nadkarni Sir earlier and for me after reading the rubbish comments of Mr Nadkarni on this created war I was totally taken a back & could never believe what I had read with my eyes which can be simply described as disgraceful.
Coming back to the pure business I clearly remember that day when I myself and mR Nadkarni Sir were together for the recording of that beauty of a rendition by Rafi Saab from the film Kalpana with music score by O P Nayyar in which Kishore Kumar was the lead and the song “Mana mora bawara – aashaonke deepa jalakar†was to be shot on Kishore Saab. The greatest Rafi Saab as usual in his ever cool completed the recording of this song after a couple of re-takes and as all are aware he had left no stone unturned in singing forth this song by pouring out his heart & soul out for the master piece rendition. Rafi Sab had brought out his best mainly since he was play-backing for none other than the great Kishore Kumar and Rafi Saab wanted to be almost 200% sure and perfect in all the respects. After the final take was okayed Kishore Kumar almost wept profusely and came towards Rafi Saab and fell on his noble feet as a mark of his gratitude for the terrific rendition. Rafi Saab ne Kishore ko tab apne gale se lagaya aur kaha “Kishore agar aap ye gana gathe tho mujhase kaheen zyada behtar gatheâ€
You crazy politicians please note that this was the heart & soul of these 2 great legends aur aap log inke beech mein war kara rahe hain. Shame on all of you – please stop calling your selves as Rafi or Kishore fans mainly since you all have maligned this beautiful site and have been fighting amongst for no fault of these great legends.
In fact I would like to plead with the concerned coordinator & administrator of this site to please put an end to such dirty politicians entering in this beautiful site and further please ensure decoram and discipline Sirs mainly since Rafi and Kishore were great friends and above all deeply respected each other. Rafi Sahab is the best singer ever, one who do’nt accept this fact might be suffering from insanity. we Rafians enjoy the uniquely sheer quality of voice, genuinely natural expression which the insan one like kisore fan can’t perceive. such a individuals need a treatment.
here m suggesting a good prescription—-
1. listen to 5 Rafi Sahabs’s Romantic songs (does 2 b taken in the morning)
2. listen to 5 Rafi Sahabs’s sentimental songs(does 2 b taken 1/2 hour after d first does)
3. listen to 5 Rafi Sahabs’s duet songs( with lata, asha, suman kalyanpur………) (@ noon)
4. listen to 5 Rafi Sahabs’s other songs( qawwali, bhajan, naat,shabad,ghazal, folksy song, punjabi, bengali, marathi, gujrati, sindhi etc. song) (does 2 b taken in the evening)
if u use the prescribed tablets(songs), u’ll certainly get rid of dis problem. Many like u has changed their views & become Rafi fans. u should’nt be surprised if u joine the list…….

kishore kumar was a good singer and he has sung about 1600 songs in his entire career.
mohd rafi sang approx. 6000 songs . ashabhosle has sung over 12000 songs and holds the record for maxximum songs – sung. lata didi sang about 5066 songs betwen 1945 up to 1989.
mohd rafi made heroes out of ordinary actors and all you “jalte huwe few fans” of kk know that this is a long list enough. kishore kumar’s name will also figure in this.
kishore kumars time had come in the seventies. yes . this is a fact. the jalte huwe fans do not have to say this – again, again and again.
mohd rafi had virtually taken up residence in london for about a year during the times. and kishore kumar had a field day to some extent. yes he did give some good songs as well as some crass numbers.
the noted composer r.d.burman’s era was brought down during kishore kumars era and it was the king of playback singing mohd rafi who brought back glory to r.d.b with those popular award winning numbers.
