True Voice – Mohd Rafi
The following article was brought to my notice when Sharad posted it on MAS. The article has been trimmed down a bit keeping afloat Rafi details. However, anyone interested can go visit the source at http://tfmpage.com/forum/4980.6302.04.57.19.html
I am Swaminatha Iyer and I am 78 years old. I hail from Tiruchi and I am a part of music associations in Tiruchi, M’as as well as in West Bengal and Maharashtra.
I think it is wrong to condemn music or artists on either side of Vindhyas. Our Indian music is one of the few which has not been cleaned off by the western music though there has always been a influence. It speaks a lot of the richness of our music. Sometime back director of MTV had said that MTV westernized the music wherever it went but in India , MTV had to be Indianized for it to be accepted. A lot of this credit goes to the Indian film music.
I have been fortunate to have close personal association with Rafi, Sirkali, TMS, Dr. BMK, Kishore, SPB & KJY, PS, Mannadey and the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.
Comparisons are bound to come, but almost every artist or I have met considers Lata to be beyond comparison. Her talents are beyond anyone’s reach. Even Sirkazi used to talk of her singing like a die-hard fan as do countless others.
Now coming to the Rafi-SPB discussion. It might be difficult to convince an South Indian to believe Rafi is the better and at the same time Rafi crowd will never believe any other male singer comes anywhere nearer. There is one more mobile crowd, which is well conversant with Hindi and some south Indian language. Majority of them tilt to either Rafi or Kishore.
During one of my stays in M’as I had stayed with SPB. While talking of true voices he said, I don’t feel like half a singer when listening to Rafi. True voice is not a tech term but many in circle use it. Perfect example would be lata, but to understand consider our own PS who within her range is superb. People who do not have such true voices can never do justice to original. They generally underplay many parts of the song or fake it with bass/superficial singing. True voices make people like Sirkazi, Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Lata… Inimitable. However since Sirkazi and Nusrat did not have the filmy voices their “real” following is limited to their local arena.
In addition to the true voice if the singer has a very good voice then in “most” cases he/she can better songs of others. It is this combination which makes Rafi stand out among the other male singers. There are many here who seem to have mistaken notions on a good bass and also on high pitch.
Bryan Adams does not require a monster bass in “Summer of 69” to sound real manly. It is the punch which gives that feel and that is decided only by the comfort level in most ranges (that is by what your throat can support). This you CAN never disguise with bass. Since people have talked about lack of manly voice viz. a viz. Rafi it was necessary to bring this point out. I have had the fortune of listening to most singers in studio and some times without a mike, practicing with MD’s.When Lata or Rafi do, the level is so high that people hesitate to even hum. It felt silly to sing in their presence (and it feels silly when someone says his voice isn’t manly).
In RD’s tribute when SPB sang “Aaja Aaja mein hoon” or “Chaand mera dil” it sounded only sweet and lacked punch if you compare with Rafi’s original.
Yesu once told me God has been partial to Rafi. He said “god gift term anavasyamaa romba common aa ippo use aardu”.. but idu Rafi kee thaan 100% porundu”. This person could sing “as intricately as a lady without sounding thin”, “cover any mood”, “versatility odey perfect example Rafi”. Yesu said most important is the comfort level over ranges which makes you feel God has been partial to Rafi. (But Of course in Rafi’s early career (1950’s) the voice was relatively feeble).
To people exposed to Rafi’s talent, these or any amount of praise can only seem less. I just wish he was alive and you people could get a live chance to hear him. Probably you can get hold of the DD album for the Geet Gaata Chal series where the first four episodes were dedicated to Rafi. Rafi is on camera singing “O Duniya Ke Rakwaaley” and many other songs. If you see and hear the last part you will realize why SPB said “impossible”. I think particularly those people who have talked about scales w.r.t Rafi should see this album. Its a known fact in industry that Rafi ruled high pitch and there is no male singer better in switching notes so easily. There are artists who can go beyond but then they sound strained or they don’t have pleasant voices when they venture into those territories.
Many singers of today are his compulsive followers. But they end up inheriting only part of his quality. Md. Aziz ended up with a sad voice. Mahendra Kapoor with a thick nasal voice. Anwar with a nasal voice. Sonu Nigam with a feminine voice. Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice he had a good voice. Importantly did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.
There seems to be lot of talk about “Shankara Bharanamo” song. SPB has sung many a great numbers and things being said about this song in this forum are rather amusing, particularly b’cos 3 out of 4 people who can be called as singers will be able sing it and at least one out of 10 will sing it with the same effect. There are lot of other songs of SPB where this great singer has played with songs in total control. You will find most south Indian singers who have had a good exposure say that it is beneficial to learn Hindustani as it gives better breath control and improves expression.
Rafi was not only able to glide over a song, the important thing was that he could express each word/sound when singing. It is one thing to hold your breath, start and reach a crescendo (high note), as like in “Shankara”, “Anbey (Yennai kaan villaye)” it is different ballgame if you have to do it from low notes or suddenly switch notes. With practice the former can be done, latter requires a special gift. Rafi had a natural ability to do the latter. In “Tum joh mil gaye ho” there is such a transition in the “karwaan mil gaya” part. I have never seen anyone do justice to most of his songs in my life time. In “parda hai parda” quawaali the similar part is “kar doon to, Akbar mera naam”. In fact most of his songs will have these specialty as it was his natural ability to sing freely in a wide range at the same time giving that extra expression.
Whereas SPB takes us to heavens with “Idu oru pon maali”,”Ilaya nila” “bisiladarenu”(kannada), when he sings Rafi’s song it lacks the punch or expression, though it has the bass. But at least most agree that SPB does some justice to original, whereas most others murder the original.
One trivial point I would like to add is that singing in Hindi is harder. There are more “JHA”,”CHA”,”HA”,”THA”, “KHA”,”JA”,”FA”. These take away the breath faster. The more expressive you are the more air you are using up. Just singing from Nabhi will not help, your throat also needs to do a lot, for singing in Hindi, Bengali etc. SPB makes you fall in love with his south Indian songs but same cannot be said about his Hindi songs. If you just glide through words having these sounds, you will never be expressive. Doing this as well as reaching high notes is not easy. Rafi had this gift and that’s why it is difficult to imagine anyone else in his shoes. Song “Chalkaaye jaam” has so much expression that it is unthinkable how anyone can sing it. When Rafi switches to a high note with “Mitwaa” in the song “Chaahunga mein tughey” you cannot replicate it with bass. Most others will sound as if they are shouting in such cases. That man’s throat had the ability to freely sing at such levels.
Versatility is not just the ability to sing in various styles, more important is how good you are singing in those styles. You have lot of Ghazal singers today but when Rafi sings a Ghazal you will sit up and take notice. You don’t have to be part of the Ghazal listeners crowd. This is one important aspect. Whatever style you sing you should be able to pull the common man to listen and not just a particular crowd. Pick “parda hai parda” or any qawalli and it will stand tall among other qawalli’s.
Variety is amazing :
songs of Guru Dutt’s Khagaz key phool or songs like abhi naa jao chod key, Aaja teri yaad aayi, Aaj kal mein dhal gaya, Aaj kal terey merey pyaar, Aasmaan sey aaya farishta, Dil ney pyaar kiya hai, Deewana mujh saa nahi, Din dhal jaaye, Duniya paagal hai, Jaane walon jara, Dil joh na kaha saka, Dil key jharokon mein, Dil kaa bhavar, Chalkey teri aakkhon sey, Kar chaley hum fida, khilona jaan kar tum, Woh jab yaad aay, Woh hain jara khafa, Vaadian mera daaman, Pathar key sanam, Chaand mera dil, Main zindagi kaa saath, Mainey poocha chaand sey, sun sun jaalima, Koi jab raah na paay, hum to chaley pardes, badan pey sitaarey, laal chadi maidaan, Tum jo mil gaye, O meri shaahey, Sau baar janam lengey, Tum mujhey yoon bhula, Tumney mujhey dekha, Terey merey sapney, Tumny pukaara hum chaley aay
Name a situation/mood and Rafi’s song will be there on the top.

what a pitty,
‘shor-kumar’ and ‘sala – sahab’ are considered some singers.
———– ————
abhishek/bhushan/kishorefan1/rafifan1/ bhattacharya-same person different names.
kie? shor-kumar had no prestigious awards to his credit, struggling since 1948, for earning some name for himself. in the end, he neither turned out to be a good-singer, nor an actor. the area where he got some recognition was comedy. Humor had influence his failed life throughout his career, as he was never serious in anything. in his last interview with lata mangeshkar, he admitted that he knew nothing about singing and confessed that he even did not have the basic understanding of music. he said he knew nothing about, ‘saregamapadhanisa’.
the interview is readily available on internet,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_XWga_O1k
the singer who himself says that he did not know singing, nobody else can never say he was a singer.
mannaday said that kishore kumar was not considered a singer in musical circles and was nick-named as shor-kumar.
Kumar sanu was a better singer, much better than kk.
kk voice had an unpleasant exaggerated bassy voice, suitable for amitabh bhachan only.
“kk”-kekra, had an exaggerated very high unpleasant bass in his voice, which made his voice like “patha huwa dhol”, these useless fans of “shor-kumar” ears are used to “that” lot of noise, hence they feel such silly thing about the most melodious voice, called “god’s voice”.
Hemant kumar was another singer with good manly voice, but kishore kumar was best in hindi and among females lata was the top with good voice.
Tirwezi
forget yoodleeyoo, kishore had a great manly voice so was ghantashala ji, see my previous question ( on manly voice of rafi) what this article says, try to convince those people who are of such views. That is what even this article says. Criticising such people is different, but it is true that many people have such views.

these worthless people will keep trying to degrade rafi, but his status will remain highest as ever.
the dwarf singers are nothing in front of the legends.
kk voice never suite anybody except amitabh bhachan.
kumar sanu was a much better singer than kk.
this is what rafi lovers think about kk, who was not considered evn a singer in musical circles of that time, he got fame only in 70’s where good music died.
what can we say about kk who could not grab even a single award in his long long futile and failed struggle to become some sort of singer.
rafi is the “singer of the millenium.”
“YUDLI, YUDLI, YUDLI….YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”
THE JOKER-CUM-SINGER KNEW ONLY ONE THING IN SINGING, AND THATS,

“sala mey to sahab bun gayya hmmm attenshunn”,
this song brings connection between kie? shor kumar and “sala” fans
in “salan” chilies were maximum, TAHTS WHY FEW PEOPLE MADE LOT OF “SHOR”, THESE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE, RAFI FANS MUST NEVER BOTHER THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE AS WORTHLESS AS THEIR COMMENTS.
HOW CAN A SINGER WHO WAS NICK-NAMED AS SHOR-KUMAR, AND ANOTHER LOCAL SINGER WHOSE NAME IS “SALA” SAHAB, COULD BE BETTER THAN THE LEGENDRY RAFI.
LET THESE BURN IN THEIR Jealousy SHOUTING, “YYYUUDDLLLIIIYYYOOO”

in the para 8 of this article true voice , it says that some people also have the view that his voice is not manly, this I too have heard from many people. What do rafi fans has to say on that?
Now some of these rafi fans have started shouting at the moderator, excellent, unki asli rang bahar aa gai.
3362 musharaff – anybody will agree (even a layman) that “classical singing is much superior to playback singing” and classical singers look down playback singing as cheaper. Thus a veratile filmy singer with specialised expertise in classical singing is undoubtedly superior by all means.
Even kishore fans have appreciated rafi to the extent it requires and not exceeding limits (which some of the rafi fans do), this Mr. Hans should know. Songs like Mere naina, roop tera mastana etc. would not have been similar to kishore if rafi would have sung them.
Hans kyon chipak rahe ho edhar, zaheendanish ka route le lo zaldi, tumhara 3366 post brings out the jealousy factor in you when one states some true facts. You are not able to tolerate true facts, please continue. Ghantasala did a excellent job in that song, paadauta theeyaga , I agree with Bharti bhai’s views on that, though it is a simple song, it is hard to replicate what ghantasala did in that song. The situation in the film is quite visible, you have misinterpreted it and ghantasala was perfect. The telugu version mooga manasulu was original and milan was remake, I found telugu actors expressions to be more active than the hindi actors.
Hans, forgot one point, you have misinterpreted my post on lata mangeshkar when i said few songs she is clearly ahead of rafi, this does not mean rafi was ahead in all others, rafi was ok along with lata it should mean, not superior.
Hans – Mooga manasulu was a bumper hit – the hindi remake milan in each and every aspect does not fit for comparison for mooga manasulu, just research and check the facts.
Few rafi fans : kyon chilla rahe hon bhaiya’s, hum logon ne kuch kaha hi nahin aur aap log bhounkna shoor kar rahe ho. aakhir aapka shikayat kya hai ? aap rafi fans ke thode post he nahi publish hote hai kyonki woh nonsense post hai. Aap log kabhi bhi sahi tarah se samajh naki sakenge kaun kya hai. Aur ye hans and others : there was never a issue between kishore fans and ghantasala fans ; a very lengthy and cordial discussion existed between these two music lovers in kishore forum, numerous posts can be read, to be more clear kishore fans have discussed about skills and talent of ghantasala from his industry point of view and as a part of southern music and there was no issue for kishore kumar or hindi industry with southern industry. any problem if found anywhere is found with rafi fans. I am happy to see one Mr. Ram Krishan bharti appreciating ghantasala here, like we kishore fans did on similar terms, we kishore fans have immense respect for such real music lovers like Mr. Bharti ji, who are capable enough for good musical discussions. Hope those “few rafi fans” know this. I have conveyed what I wanted to convey and hope these people understand.
3345 – Bharti Ji
I feel very happy to read your post and I agree with most of your views. If you are interested, we can discuss among various musical genres through e-mails, as here it might not be appropriate.
3371 – Musharaff ji, – there is only one god, if one knows the truth. what the true believer of hinduism believes and says that it is the oldest religion existing on earth and from which all other teachings have originated, – so naturally everything has to be one, since the mother of all religions is one. Depending upon the time and circumstances different messengers have propogated the messages only to the extent it was necessary, from the original source. The misnomer by many people (mainly in west) is whatever has been stated to them is only complete and dis-regarding other aspects, as those aspects were not told to them by the messengers (which they felt it was not necessary to be told to them according to times) and who in fact knew the truths existing in the original source. So if one goes deep, everything is one, all are children of god.
Dear friends,
Hemanta Mukherjee is a well known singer of West Bengal. He has to his credit Tagore songs, Bengali modern songs, Bengali film songs and last but not the least Hindi film songs too. But apart from that he was also a successful Music Director of Kolkata Film world as well as Bollywood. After liberation of Bangladesh he more than once came to Dhaka (My birth place)where he rendered many popular legendary songs of Kolkata film world in Bangladesh Television specially those that he sang for legendary hero Uttam Kumar whose movies I enjoyed from my childhood. However, I am now presenting you a beautiful romantic song Hematada composed for the film “Do Dil” for the hero “Biswajit” and sung by no one else but the greatest Mohammed Rafi in the following link.

Dear behna, Post-3359.
It is amazing that you have quoted a Koranic verse. It reflects that you also take keen interest in other religions too. For your food of thought I would suggest that you listen to some lectures of Dr.Zakir Naik, an outstanding scholar of India who has got Veda, koran and Bible to his heart. He is a master in comparative religion. In one of his lectures he has shown how Veda, the original book of Sanatana Hindu religion and Koran the book of the Muslims has a striking agreement regarding the oneness of God. I think his lectures are available in you tube or his own website.

Most respected shri hans!
If you read my comments, never have i said that ghantasala is better than rafi.
To me rafi is unparalleled, even much better than lata. If you analyses lata singing, she has not sung all kinds of songs, in ghazal singing, and hip hop type of songs, asha was always ahead of lata, but in contrary to that, rafi has sung all kinds of songs with utmost perfection.
I was commenting on the particular songs presented here sung in Telugu.
To me Rafi Saab is, and will always remain the greatest singer, some people use the word greatest play-back singer, but in my humble opinion Rafi was much more than a play-back singer. When Rafi sings ghazal, he takes it to the ultimate heights. Look, Rafi was gifted by almighty, with such a beautiful voice that makes him popular in all kinds and norms of singing. He has the most melodious and sweetest of voices. It is never an exaggeration when people call his voice as divine or heavenly.
I love Rafi sahib voice and his singing style more than anybody else. I think not mukesh, not talat mehmood, not anybody in past, present and future can sing like Mohammad Rafi.
You have also rightly pointed out that Rafi is not liked by kk fans due to a reason. let me mention that reason, let me be fair in accepting the fact that despite India being a secular sate but we still have not learned to live amongst different cultures, religions, and sects in harmony, peace and affection. Look where are other countries going. They are making such a progress but we are not one, even after living together for so many years. Rafi was a Muslim, that’s why some people persist on degrading him. If he is judged with pure music sense, nobody, i repeat nobody is a better singer than him. Even nobody comes near his status; he is a giant and unpararelled king of music. If we analyses that most of his admirers are Muslim, there are far few like me, who supports Rafi sahib. I will appeal to all by brothers and sisters to learn judging people without religious, sectarian, ethnic, cultural prejudice.
We love Rafi sahib and he is the ultimate, the first and last word, the “alpha and the omega” in singing. Hats off to this greatest asset and heritage of Hindustan.
Devika Deedi, Post-3364.
Please do not underestimate yourself. You are a great and an outstanding writer. You analysis, choice of words and lastly your unquestionable love for rafi are ample evidences of your writing talents.
Please go ahead. Hamari duayen aap ki saath hai.

the song ‘paadutha theeyaga challaga’ link of which you provided is from film ‘mooga manasulu’. the director of this film a. subba rao made a remake of this film in hindi by the name of ‘milan’ in 1967, which starred sunil dutt and nutan.
there was a song ‘ram kare aisa ho jaye’ sung by mukesh in hindi film ‘milan’ on the same situation. if we listen to mukesh’s song, we find that he has conveyed the right emotions for the situation, when hero is sympathising with heroine who has been widowed. what was needed was a song with emotions filled with sympathy and a soothing song so that the heroine sleeps peacefully. mukesh did it admirably.
but, what has ghantasala done. he has sung a song where he himself appears weeping. how would he soothe the heroine. his voice is also very coarse for the situation without any modulation, which was the hallmark of ghantasala singing, never leave your monotony of voice whatever the situation. even kk had better flexibility of voice in many songs.
it is to the credit of the heroine that she went to sleep in the film despite the hoarse and coarse song.
i hope bharti would also change his view when he knows the situation for which gs was singing.
when gs could not even match mukesh, how he can even come near to rafi.
kishore fan – 3298
when you say that ghantasala ke songs rafi se bhi tough the and when you say lata was even ahead of rafi in some songs ( which otherwise means that rafi was ahead in all others ) you accept the greatness of rafi.
most kk fans have unashamedly accepted the superiority of ghantasala over kk, but are not ready to accept rafi’s superiority. the reason behind this lies in something else other than singing capabilities. you are accepting everything being said by gs fans to get their support, while they never accepted kk to be a better singer still you support them. they even go to the extent to say that every tom, dick and harry of a singer from south is better than even the greatest of singers of hindi. fir bhi tum unke peechhe dum hilate ghumte ho, ye ghulami nahin to aur kya hai.
about lata i had asked a pin-pointed question and i had asked to rate the four named singers. but, i can not expect a direct reply from you. asha left behind lata in number of songs as well as no of hits in the later period starting from early 70s and even in quality of songs she was not far behind, may be better in later era. later lata was left behind in quantity of songs and hits by anuradha paudwal and yagnik also. but you are not ready to apply the same criteria for lata vis-a-vis asha, anuradha and yagnik, but you are jumping like monkeys when you try to project kk as better singer just because he sang a few songs more than rafi in the whole of 70s. in quality and no of hits rafi was always on top. this is pure double standards and the reason again lies somewhere else than singing. i would not state the obvious.
i would myself anyday rate lata as the greatest among female singers because of her overall work and singing capabilities. but as per your theory she is not even better than yagnik.

Devika didi, Post-3343,
Thank you for the song”Mahfil se uth jane walo” Really a cute song that I am listening again after a long time.
Regards.
Bhushanji,
The song Rave na chelia is definitely a better song than the former one that you had quoted. I too like Mr. Bharti have thoroughly enjoyed the song. This song as usual reflects the classical expertize of ghantasala. As I have observed from listening to Ghantasala, one immediately feels on hearing his songs that some “Ustaad” or “Pandit” is singing generating the classical flavor whereas if you listen to Rafi you will instantly feel the filmy flavor, that it is a hero singing to a heroine even if that song has been sung in a classical or in the Ghazal andaaz.
Now please listen to the following song sung by Mohammed Rafi that I have already posted earlier in my post 3259.”Jiyo to ayse jiyo, jaise sab tumhara hai”. See the melody and the style with which Rafi had rendered the song. This versatility in playback singing has made him unparallelled.

POWER IS THE ULTIMATE THING IN THIS WORLD. MR. MODERATOR IS ENJOYING THIS AND MAKING FULL USE OF HIS NUISANCE VALUE. HE WILL ALWAYS GO BY HIS OWN “PULSE-FEELING”. HENCE “SABAR KARO BHAYYA” AND N-JAYI, ZAHEENDANISH SAHAB.

do you know what you are saying. in 3223 you defend the moderator by saying there must be some set standards. in the very next post 6 minutes later you contradict yourself and say that derogatory statements of swami were posted and dignified comments were kept under moderation. so at that time moderator’s policy was to pass derogatory and hold up decent comments.
i have no hope of your being ever consistent.
you say i and binuji were silent at that time. i was not even in the discussion at that time. but, for me the first and foremost person who deserves dignity is rafi whose site this is. if he is being belittled under whatever disguise anything in retaliation is a lesser crime. on this analogy i had supported swami when i later came into discussion. so dont expect me to chastise any rafi fan. they have full freedom to say whatever they like to those who try to degrade rafi.
