True Voice – Mohd Rafi

I am Swaminatha Iyer and I am 78 years old. I hail from Tiruchi and I am a part of music associations in Tiruchi, M’as as well as in West Bengal and Maharashtra.
I think it is wrong to condemn music or artists on either side of Vindhyas. Our Indian music is one of the few which has not been cleaned off by the western music though there has always been a influence. It speaks a lot of the richness of our music. Sometime back director of MTV had said that MTV westernized the music wherever it went but in India , MTV had to be Indianized for it to be accepted. A lot of this credit goes to the Indian film music.
I have been fortunate to have close personal association with Rafi, Sirkali, TMS, Dr. BMK, Kishore, SPB & KJY, PS, Mannadey and the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.
Comparisons are bound to come, but almost every artist or I have met considers Lata to be beyond comparison. Her talents are beyond anyone’s reach. Even Sirkazi used to talk of her singing like a die-hard fan as do countless others.
Now coming to the Rafi-SPB discussion. It might be difficult to convince an South Indian to believe Rafi is the better and at the same time Rafi crowd will never believe any other male singer comes anywhere nearer. There is one more mobile crowd, which is well conversant with Hindi and some south Indian language. Majority of them tilt to either Rafi or Kishore.
During one of my stays in M’as I had stayed with SPB. While talking of true voices he said, I don’t feel like half a singer when listening to Rafi. True voice is not a tech term but many in circle use it. Perfect example would be lata, but to understand consider our own PS who within her range is superb. People who do not have such true voices can never do justice to original. They generally underplay many parts of the song or fake it with bass/superficial singing. True voices make people like Sirkazi, Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Lata… Inimitable. However since Sirkazi and Nusrat did not have the filmy voices their “real” following is limited to their local arena.
In addition to the true voice if the singer has a very good voice then in “most” cases he/she can better songs of others. It is this combination which makes Rafi stand out among the other male singers. There are many here who seem to have mistaken notions on a good bass and also on high pitch.
Bryan Adams does not require a monster bass in “Summer of 69” to sound real manly. It is the punch which gives that feel and that is decided only by the comfort level in most ranges (that is by what your throat can support). This you CAN never disguise with bass. Since people have talked about lack of manly voice viz. a viz. Rafi it was necessary to bring this point out. I have had the fortune of listening to most singers in studio and some times without a mike, practicing with MD’s.When Lata or Rafi do, the level is so high that people hesitate to even hum. It felt silly to sing in their presence (and it feels silly when someone says his voice isn’t manly).
In RD’s tribute when SPB sang “Aaja Aaja mein hoon” or “Chaand mera dil” it sounded only sweet and lacked punch if you compare with Rafi’s original.
Yesu once told me God has been partial to Rafi. He said “god gift term anavasyamaa romba common aa ippo use aardu”.. but idu Rafi kee thaan 100% porundu”. This person could sing “as intricately as a lady without sounding thin”, “cover any mood”, “versatility odey perfect example Rafi”. Yesu said most important is the comfort level over ranges which makes you feel God has been partial to Rafi. (But Of course in Rafi’s early career (1950’s) the voice was relatively feeble).
To people exposed to Rafi’s talent, these or any amount of praise can only seem less. I just wish he was alive and you people could get a live chance to hear him. Probably you can get hold of the DD album for the Geet Gaata Chal series where the first four episodes were dedicated to Rafi. Rafi is on camera singing “O Duniya Ke Rakwaaley” and many other songs. If you see and hear the last part you will realize why SPB said “impossible”. I think particularly those people who have talked about scales w.r.t Rafi should see this album. Its a known fact in industry that Rafi ruled high pitch and there is no male singer better in switching notes so easily. There are artists who can go beyond but then they sound strained or they don’t have pleasant voices when they venture into those territories.
Many singers of today are his compulsive followers. But they end up inheriting only part of his quality. Md. Aziz ended up with a sad voice. Mahendra Kapoor with a thick nasal voice. Anwar with a nasal voice. Sonu Nigam with a feminine voice. Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice he had a good voice. Importantly did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.
There seems to be lot of talk about “Shankara Bharanamo” song. SPB has sung many a great numbers and things being said about this song in this forum are rather amusing, particularly b’cos 3 out of 4 people who can be called as singers will be able sing it and at least one out of 10 will sing it with the same effect. There are lot of other songs of SPB where this great singer has played with songs in total control. You will find most south Indian singers who have had a good exposure say that it is beneficial to learn Hindustani as it gives better breath control and improves expression.
Rafi was not only able to glide over a song, the important thing was that he could express each word/sound when singing. It is one thing to hold your breath, start and reach a crescendo (high note), as like in “Shankara”, “Anbey (Yennai kaan villaye)” it is different ballgame if you have to do it from low notes or suddenly switch notes. With practice the former can be done, latter requires a special gift. Rafi had a natural ability to do the latter. In “Tum joh mil gaye ho” there is such a transition in the “karwaan mil gaya” part. I have never seen anyone do justice to most of his songs in my life time. In “parda hai parda” quawaali the similar part is “kar doon to, Akbar mera naam”. In fact most of his songs will have these specialty as it was his natural ability to sing freely in a wide range at the same time giving that extra expression.
Whereas SPB takes us to heavens with “Idu oru pon maali”,”Ilaya nila” “bisiladarenu”(kannada), when he sings Rafi’s song it lacks the punch or expression, though it has the bass. But at least most agree that SPB does some justice to original, whereas most others murder the original.
One trivial point I would like to add is that singing in Hindi is harder. There are more “JHA”,”CHA”,”HA”,”THA”, “KHA”,”JA”,”FA”. These take away the breath faster. The more expressive you are the more air you are using up. Just singing from Nabhi will not help, your throat also needs to do a lot, for singing in Hindi, Bengali etc. SPB makes you fall in love with his south Indian songs but same cannot be said about his Hindi songs. If you just glide through words having these sounds, you will never be expressive. Doing this as well as reaching high notes is not easy. Rafi had this gift and that’s why it is difficult to imagine anyone else in his shoes. Song “Chalkaaye jaam” has so much expression that it is unthinkable how anyone can sing it. When Rafi switches to a high note with “Mitwaa” in the song “Chaahunga mein tughey” you cannot replicate it with bass. Most others will sound as if they are shouting in such cases. That man’s throat had the ability to freely sing at such levels.
Versatility is not just the ability to sing in various styles, more important is how good you are singing in those styles. You have lot of Ghazal singers today but when Rafi sings a Ghazal you will sit up and take notice. You don’t have to be part of the Ghazal listeners crowd. This is one important aspect. Whatever style you sing you should be able to pull the common man to listen and not just a particular crowd. Pick “parda hai parda” or any qawalli and it will stand tall among other qawalli’s.

Kindly reply to my following queries:
1. The writer Mr. Swaminath Iyer apparently has written article about MUHAMMAD RAFI, but the writer could not conceal his bias towards the singing sensation of Hindustan.
2. He has narrated a few names in the beginning of the article including Rafi, Sirkali, TMS, Dr. BMK, Kishore, SPB & KJY, PS, Mannadey.
3. Then he went on to call lata mangeshkar, “the one and only”, why.
4. He writes Lata is beyond comparison, and that her talents are beyond anyone’s reach.
5. We know that lata was not known to sing all kinds of songs equally well, her sister asha could sing ghazals, joyful and blissful songs much better than lata. As far as sweetness is concerned, suman kulyanpur’s, surraya, geeta dutt had much sweeter voices than lata’s.
6. In the duets with lata, rafi almost always dominated.

This is my first post in this thread, since so many days I have been reading the comments of various fans (both ghantasala and Kishore Kumar), but I was a bit uneasy to notice your comments which are more like “baazari” (sorry to say such word) whereas I read your earlier comments (Comment ref:2286 in this thread) which shows your tolerance and head-weight as a music lover. I just want to copy your comment just show other rafi fans who might not go such way back to post 2286.

If a shammi kapoor was there, perhaps the song would have hit more popularity.

I have heard the song priye charuseele by ghantasala in your above post mr. Bhushan – There are no words to express my appreciations for the melody, command or expressions rendered by ghantasala – mind blowing as mr. Musharaff says. Not only that I heard other songs of ghantasala provided there, nee madhu murali, dhira sameere, nadu prema bhagya rasi, pralaya payodhijale, – there are no words to describe the happiness felt on hearing these songs. Since they are sanskrit renditions, it does not matter whether one has good knowledge of the language or not.
Dear music lovers including rafi fans, Kindly forget comparisons and arguments for the moment, please do not miss the beauty of the above compositions as well as soulful renditions – magnificient that’s all I can say. Words are short for appreciations for the renditions of the southern legend of legends ghantasala. I am sure if one misses the soulful renditions, great music renditions will be surely missed.

It is sad to see the fighting messages on two great legends – both incomparable in their own ways – if ghantasala is devout arjuna, rafi is dan veer karna – we know both were pandavas and matchless warriors. Hearing the songs of ghantasala and rafi, it is really difficult to even imagine who is great – of course in my view technically and classically ghantasala has got a clear clear edge, and he has got a magnificient melodious voice god gifted as Mr. Musharaff says, going by these terms all put together, I feel that a musician shall definitely put weightage on ghantasala clearly (no offence meant to rafi please in any way – my highest regards for this hindi legend of legends no doubt about his mastery) as compared to rafi. Hope these comparisons end, as we had enough of that. Simply enjoy great music and renditions as provided in the links above.
Actually, the administrator of this site should be thanked profusely, perhaps no other site has mixture of this type of indian music (south and north) this site is really really a feast to the true music lovers. All the best.

you say that the telugu film was bumper hit. you should know that ‘milan’ was a bigger hit in hindi. it perhaps earned more in bombay itself than your ‘mooga manasulu’ could earn in whole of ap.
if you are hateful and jealous of the hindi ‘milan’ because of it being a hindi film, then i may tell you that it was produced by prasad productions of the south and directed by the same director, who directed ‘mooga manasulu’. this should soothe your southern sensibilities.
this film got 3 filmfare awards including best music for lp and it got nominated for best movie also but lost out to ‘upkar’.
otherwise also your comment is meaningless because i was just comparing emotions put in by the respective playback singers into a song in the same situation. and it would not have mattered even if hindi film was a flop.
when i analysed the song i left many things unsaid, because they would have appeared harsh. the emotions put in by ghantasala in this song are akin to those which a beggar puts in when asking for alms. further, gs appears to be breathless in many places in the song. though some of salans argued that he developed respiratory problems after 1967 or 68.

BESIDE THE FACT THAT KK WAS NOT EVEN CONSIDERED A SINGER IN THE MUSICAL CIRCLE AND HENCE NICKNAMED “SHOR” KUMAR, AS STATED BY MANNADAY, THE ONLY REASON BEHIND THIS SEEMS TO BE BECAUSE KK SANG A SONG AS A TRIBUTE TO GS, “SALA MEY TO SAHAB BUN GAYA, HMMM, ATTEN SHUN”.

Dear Rafi fans,
I think it is high time that we stop responding to those posts of ghantasala and kishore fans that reflects only jealousy towards Rafi sahab. Having conceived the fact that their idols are no match to Rafi as far as playback singing is concerned, whether that be in terms of fame, achievement or success they are now making concerted efforts to undermine Mohammed Rafi in our site. But their attempts are futile because the overwhelming and undisputed position Rafi is enjoying is an acknowledged and accepted historical fact and their posts can do but little to alter this. Rather by doing this they are degrading their own idols. Their sites are barren like Sahara deserts compared to Rafi sites since the songs of their idol singers do not possess that charm and beauty that the songs of Rafi possess. Having nothing to do they are intruding in Rafi sites and trying in vain to undermine the greatest playback singer of all times. No language of any nature seem to have any effect on them. So I think we should leave them to their jealousy and stop responding to their posts and enjoy the artistry of our idol.

It is the versatality factor which makes one a greater singer, mohd rafi was both versatile and with a more attractive voice than kishore kumar : that is what rafi makes a class in his own as compared to kishore kumar who has sung some good songs which cannot be denied, but overall rafi is the best when it is rafi vs kishore !!!
Kishore kumar did not have any awards what about that kishore fans. Rafi was a padmashree recepient (so was ghantasala), what about kishore ?

My request is to please stop comparing ghantashala ji with rafi mainly for two reasons : one is he was a genius in the south and topmost ever in his industry and next is he was gifted with a divine voice and great technical skills for which rafi was never a match, so comparison does not make sense. You people should discuss with great musicians about a talent like ghantashala ji and not with people who do not know about music and only no shouting out of jealousy. Hope you take the same in right spirit.
Kishore fans and friends : Regarding kishore, it is a never ending debate and we kishore fans know very well what kishore was. Rafi fans know that kishore was the great singer in hindi. We will continue to show them what kishore was.

if you read my comments, never have i said that ghantasala is better than rafi.
to me rafi is unparalleled, even much better than lata. if you analyses lata singing, she has not sung all kinds of songs, in ghazal singing, and hip hop type of songs, asha was always ahead of lata, but in contrary to that, rafi has sung all kinds of songs with utmost perfection.
i was commenting on the particular songs presented here sung in telugu.
to me rafi saab is, and will always remain the greatest singer, some people use the word greatest play-back singer, but in my humble opinion rafi was much more than a play-back singer. when rafi sings ghazal, he takes it to the ultimate heights. look, rafi was gifted by almighty, with such a beautiful voice that makes him popular in all kinds and norms of singing. he has the most melodious and sweetest of voices. it is never an exaggeration when people call his voice as divine or heavenly.
i love rafi sahib voice and his singing style more than anybody else. i think not mukesh, not talat mehmood, not anybody in past, present and future can sing like mohammad rafi.
you have also rightly pointed out that rafi is not liked by kk fans due to a reason. let me mention that reason, let me be fair in accepting the fact that despite india being a secular sate but we still have not learned to live amongst different cultures, religions, and sects in harmony, peace and affection. look where are other countries going. they are making such a progress but we are not one, even after living together for so many years. rafi was a muslim, that’s why some people persist on degrading him. if he is judged with pure music sense, nobody, i repeat nobody is a better singer than him. even nobody comes near his status; he is a giant and unpararelled king of music. if we analyses that most of his admirers are muslim, there are far few like me, who supports rafi sahib. i will appeal to all by brothers and sisters to learn judging people without religious, sectarian, ethnic, cultural prejudice.
we love rafi sahib and he is the ultimate, the first and last word, the “alpha and the omega” in singing. hats off to this greatest asset and heritage of hindustan.

The song rave na cheliya you have given link is extremely great and i have no words to express the melody of ghantasala and his skills in the song. There cannot be any comparison to him, specially in terms of his technical brilliance. The second para is more beautiful and mind blowing. Thank you for that beautiful soulful song.

‘kash khabon men’ is one of my favourites. what a song.

‘sonwa ke pinjra men’ is one of the most sad songs in bhojpuri. this was composed by chitragupta, who was from bihar and composed for many bhojpuri films. rafi was his main male voice for these as well as hindi songs.
i give here the link for, perhaps rafi’s best song in local dialect (i am not sure whether it is bhojpuri). this was composed by ravi shanker the famous musician. its starting lyrics ‘pipra ke patwa sarikhe dole manwa ki hiyara men uthat hilor’ correspond to the mood of rafi fans when they hear his songs.

similarly tirwezi, amal rajinder and partvi and charvedi have all posted outstanding songs. the song posted by partvi ‘meri tasveer lekar kya karoge’ from kala samandar was a top hit song in the mid 60s, though nobody i know had seen that film. this song was rediscored by me about 10 days back and i immediately listened to it many times.

i had a very good expectation on kk after hearing the duet
song from the film “trishul” sung by lataji,kk and kjy.in that
song kk could come up with both lataji and kjy.but after
hearing his song from “muqadahr ka sikander” with lataji
“salaami ishque…. l lost the hope.also when i see in the film
“amar akber antoney” when amithab using the voice of kk
in the famous qawaali”pardaha hei pardha’ like akber teraa
naam nahee hai…. it is just like kk is crying like a child.
i was wondering if he got chances to sing low pitch and
high pitch songs, his most ardent fans will throw him out
when they hear his such songs.

Actually the two songs of ghantasala on which i gave my comments are misunderstood by few.
i was discussing about those two particular songs which had been linked by mr bhushan. i liked them and enjoyed them thoroughly.
but, never in my comments have i said the ghantasala is a better singer than rafi
to me rafi is the ultimate singer hindustan has ever had.
rafi is the “alpha and the omega” of singing.
he is the university of singing, a legend of legends. he has got the most melodious, the most velvety, the most sweet voice that i have ever heard in my life. his voice was divine. he had expressions in the songs which nobody else could ever had. rafi voice was strong, based, beautiful and amazingly flexible. he had the range which no body can think of. he was a far better singer than his contemporaries, even he was much better than lata.
i was only commenting upon the two particular telugu songs of gs.
stories of “rafi deewanes” coming out every now and then.
the last one i heard was the “mehfile-e-mohamed rafi
trstaurant” opened by mr.dheeraj bajaj in new delhi!
the interiors are decorated with photographs and wall
paintings of rafi saab in the restaurant and a live brand
also plays throughout.
so many stories before that.one sardarji from chandigrah
used to visit the village where rafi saab born and brought
up.he brought some earth from the place to keep in his
home.another famous one is the rafian from gujrat who
spared the two rooms of his flat only to display the photos
and songs of rafi saab!one of the story writers of super hit
malayalam movies mr.razak told he need to hear the song
of rafi saab on his last breath.another fan from kerala need
to ply rafi saab’s songs on his last journey.some fans of the
opinion that after the necessary things for humanbeing such
as food,cloth and shelter rafi saab’s songs be a must.the rafian
dixitji from lucknow built a temple in his home on rafi saab!

HE ALSO SAID THAT WHEN GOOD MOVIES WERE MADE, HE LEFT ACTING AS HE WAS NOT SUITABLE FOR ACTING IN STANDARD MOVIES.
