This book is not the biography of Mohammad Rafi Sahib, nor a collection of his songs with the sequence of time. As a student of music, I’ve made an effort to write something on distinctive characteristic of his singing modality and his extremely exquisites voice. The life journey; childhood; stay in Lahore and initial engagements; start of singing in Bombay; rise to excellence; then the happenings of 70s and death – on all these aspects written material is available but it’s superficial and provides only a limited information. Today July 31st, innumerable Mohd Rafi Lovers will assemble at Juhu Mosque Grave where he was laid to rest after the legendary singer suffered a massive heart attack in 1980.

Three days prior to July 31st Rafi had recorded few lines for Laxmikant Pyarelal for movie Aas Paas : “Tu kahin aas paas hai dost” which became his last song. “Acha main chalu“? was the parting words of the legendary singer to Laxmikant Pyarelal – while having his last walk from Mehboob studios to his Bandra home. Mohammad Rafi songs are for all seasons. And to keep it alive, a few fans have formed the Rafi Foundation. Trust in IC Colony, Borivali. The pilot of the project is Binu Nair, an ex-NRI, who now devotes his time to run the trust. On December 7, a full house of music lovers were treated to some exquisite Rafi tracks at the Prabodhankar Thackeray Auditorium under the title Romantic Rafi. (more…)

The weather was just right for this concert, with the rains giving Delhi a romantic feel. The event was a tribute to legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi, organized by the Rafi Foundation. And thankfully, the event started without waiting for the stars to arrive. Dec.24th will mark the 86th Birth Anniversary of legendary singer Mohd Rafi.

Dedicated music sessions in memory of Rafi Saaheb, Award to composers Ravindra Jain and  singer Suman Kalyanpur, naming of Bandra’s 16th as Mohd Rafi Road, beautification of Bandras Rafi chowk will be part of the celebrations of the day.

There were 9400 musical tribute shows last july31st, the 30th death anniversary of Mohd Rafi. The trend will continue this december says Narayan P Rafi lover from Bangalore who works for the Baar Baar Rafi forum. (more…)
