True Voice – Mohd Rafi
The following article was brought to my notice when Sharad posted it on MAS. The article has been trimmed down a bit keeping afloat Rafi details. However, anyone interested can go visit the source at http://tfmpage.com/forum/4980.6302.04.57.19.html
I am Swaminatha Iyer and I am 78 years old. I hail from Tiruchi and I am a part of music associations in Tiruchi, M’as as well as in West Bengal and Maharashtra.
I think it is wrong to condemn music or artists on either side of Vindhyas. Our Indian music is one of the few which has not been cleaned off by the western music though there has always been a influence. It speaks a lot of the richness of our music. Sometime back director of MTV had said that MTV westernized the music wherever it went but in India , MTV had to be Indianized for it to be accepted. A lot of this credit goes to the Indian film music.
I have been fortunate to have close personal association with Rafi, Sirkali, TMS, Dr. BMK, Kishore, SPB & KJY, PS, Mannadey and the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.
Comparisons are bound to come, but almost every artist or I have met considers Lata to be beyond comparison. Her talents are beyond anyone’s reach. Even Sirkazi used to talk of her singing like a die-hard fan as do countless others.
Now coming to the Rafi-SPB discussion. It might be difficult to convince an South Indian to believe Rafi is the better and at the same time Rafi crowd will never believe any other male singer comes anywhere nearer. There is one more mobile crowd, which is well conversant with Hindi and some south Indian language. Majority of them tilt to either Rafi or Kishore.
During one of my stays in M’as I had stayed with SPB. While talking of true voices he said, I don’t feel like half a singer when listening to Rafi. True voice is not a tech term but many in circle use it. Perfect example would be lata, but to understand consider our own PS who within her range is superb. People who do not have such true voices can never do justice to original. They generally underplay many parts of the song or fake it with bass/superficial singing. True voices make people like Sirkazi, Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Lata… Inimitable. However since Sirkazi and Nusrat did not have the filmy voices their “real” following is limited to their local arena.
In addition to the true voice if the singer has a very good voice then in “most” cases he/she can better songs of others. It is this combination which makes Rafi stand out among the other male singers. There are many here who seem to have mistaken notions on a good bass and also on high pitch.
Bryan Adams does not require a monster bass in “Summer of 69” to sound real manly. It is the punch which gives that feel and that is decided only by the comfort level in most ranges (that is by what your throat can support). This you CAN never disguise with bass. Since people have talked about lack of manly voice viz. a viz. Rafi it was necessary to bring this point out. I have had the fortune of listening to most singers in studio and some times without a mike, practicing with MD’s.When Lata or Rafi do, the level is so high that people hesitate to even hum. It felt silly to sing in their presence (and it feels silly when someone says his voice isn’t manly).
In RD’s tribute when SPB sang “Aaja Aaja mein hoon” or “Chaand mera dil” it sounded only sweet and lacked punch if you compare with Rafi’s original.
Yesu once told me God has been partial to Rafi. He said “god gift term anavasyamaa romba common aa ippo use aardu”.. but idu Rafi kee thaan 100% porundu”. This person could sing “as intricately as a lady without sounding thin”, “cover any mood”, “versatility odey perfect example Rafi”. Yesu said most important is the comfort level over ranges which makes you feel God has been partial to Rafi. (But Of course in Rafi’s early career (1950’s) the voice was relatively feeble).
To people exposed to Rafi’s talent, these or any amount of praise can only seem less. I just wish he was alive and you people could get a live chance to hear him. Probably you can get hold of the DD album for the Geet Gaata Chal series where the first four episodes were dedicated to Rafi. Rafi is on camera singing “O Duniya Ke Rakwaaley” and many other songs. If you see and hear the last part you will realize why SPB said “impossible”. I think particularly those people who have talked about scales w.r.t Rafi should see this album. Its a known fact in industry that Rafi ruled high pitch and there is no male singer better in switching notes so easily. There are artists who can go beyond but then they sound strained or they don’t have pleasant voices when they venture into those territories.
Many singers of today are his compulsive followers. But they end up inheriting only part of his quality. Md. Aziz ended up with a sad voice. Mahendra Kapoor with a thick nasal voice. Anwar with a nasal voice. Sonu Nigam with a feminine voice. Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice he had a good voice. Importantly did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.
There seems to be lot of talk about “Shankara Bharanamo” song. SPB has sung many a great numbers and things being said about this song in this forum are rather amusing, particularly b’cos 3 out of 4 people who can be called as singers will be able sing it and at least one out of 10 will sing it with the same effect. There are lot of other songs of SPB where this great singer has played with songs in total control. You will find most south Indian singers who have had a good exposure say that it is beneficial to learn Hindustani as it gives better breath control and improves expression.
Rafi was not only able to glide over a song, the important thing was that he could express each word/sound when singing. It is one thing to hold your breath, start and reach a crescendo (high note), as like in “Shankara”, “Anbey (Yennai kaan villaye)” it is different ballgame if you have to do it from low notes or suddenly switch notes. With practice the former can be done, latter requires a special gift. Rafi had a natural ability to do the latter. In “Tum joh mil gaye ho” there is such a transition in the “karwaan mil gaya” part. I have never seen anyone do justice to most of his songs in my life time. In “parda hai parda” quawaali the similar part is “kar doon to, Akbar mera naam”. In fact most of his songs will have these specialty as it was his natural ability to sing freely in a wide range at the same time giving that extra expression.
Whereas SPB takes us to heavens with “Idu oru pon maali”,”Ilaya nila” “bisiladarenu”(kannada), when he sings Rafi’s song it lacks the punch or expression, though it has the bass. But at least most agree that SPB does some justice to original, whereas most others murder the original.
One trivial point I would like to add is that singing in Hindi is harder. There are more “JHA”,”CHA”,”HA”,”THA”, “KHA”,”JA”,”FA”. These take away the breath faster. The more expressive you are the more air you are using up. Just singing from Nabhi will not help, your throat also needs to do a lot, for singing in Hindi, Bengali etc. SPB makes you fall in love with his south Indian songs but same cannot be said about his Hindi songs. If you just glide through words having these sounds, you will never be expressive. Doing this as well as reaching high notes is not easy. Rafi had this gift and that’s why it is difficult to imagine anyone else in his shoes. Song “Chalkaaye jaam” has so much expression that it is unthinkable how anyone can sing it. When Rafi switches to a high note with “Mitwaa” in the song “Chaahunga mein tughey” you cannot replicate it with bass. Most others will sound as if they are shouting in such cases. That man’s throat had the ability to freely sing at such levels.
Versatility is not just the ability to sing in various styles, more important is how good you are singing in those styles. You have lot of Ghazal singers today but when Rafi sings a Ghazal you will sit up and take notice. You don’t have to be part of the Ghazal listeners crowd. This is one important aspect. Whatever style you sing you should be able to pull the common man to listen and not just a particular crowd. Pick “parda hai parda” or any qawalli and it will stand tall among other qawalli’s.
Variety is amazing :
songs of Guru Dutt’s Khagaz key phool or songs like abhi naa jao chod key, Aaja teri yaad aayi, Aaj kal mein dhal gaya, Aaj kal terey merey pyaar, Aasmaan sey aaya farishta, Dil ney pyaar kiya hai, Deewana mujh saa nahi, Din dhal jaaye, Duniya paagal hai, Jaane walon jara, Dil joh na kaha saka, Dil key jharokon mein, Dil kaa bhavar, Chalkey teri aakkhon sey, Kar chaley hum fida, khilona jaan kar tum, Woh jab yaad aay, Woh hain jara khafa, Vaadian mera daaman, Pathar key sanam, Chaand mera dil, Main zindagi kaa saath, Mainey poocha chaand sey, sun sun jaalima, Koi jab raah na paay, hum to chaley pardes, badan pey sitaarey, laal chadi maidaan, Tum jo mil gaye, O meri shaahey, Sau baar janam lengey, Tum mujhey yoon bhula, Tumney mujhey dekha, Terey merey sapney, Tumny pukaara hum chaley aay
Name a situation/mood and Rafi’s song will be there on the top.

Binu ji,
The ultimate music goal for music lovers is the legend of legends Mohd. Rafi Sahab. No one else.
Binu nair ji correct about rafi’s songs in his post 3237. And in India, in my view, only ghantasala is another singer (in AP) whose songs are evergreen after 37 years of his death.
Dear Binu nair ji post 3237, ghantasala songs are evergreen in radio stations (telugu stations) after 37 years of his passing away, daily in numerous temples his renditions can be heard. Mohd rafi alone does not belong to that category please.
3237 – Binu nair, correct as long as kishore kumar was alive, rafi songs were forgotten in 1980’s
Hans ji, Maha devika ji, Binu, Ratna ji, Rajinder kumar ji and many Rafi devotees,,,,
You are all doing a fantastic job of great research on the times and brilliant career of our Faristha Janab Rafi Sahab who can be called as the father n mother of playback singing… Saigal saab can be called Grandpa of this field..
Even today many popular singers like Sonu Nigam, Shreya Goshal, Udit Narayan, Shaan and others are inpired by Rafi Sahab..
In a recent interview veteran singer Manna da in a Rafio city clearly quotes that all male youth aspiring singers keep a photo of Rafi sahab and practice/ riaz songs..
What more anybody wants now..
So let us ignore the other singers fans and keep doing a good job to love and spread the fragrance of treasure left to us to cherish by Rafi Sahab..

Dear friends,

binuji,
you are right. i thought as per my recent experience the longer posts and the ones with more than one link and those posted within a short period are put under moderation, which is also not acceptable.
but today i posted one at 9.44 pm and the other at 11.05 pm. both were of almost the same size and with one link each. the first one is put under moderation, while the second one has gone through. this is really strange behaviour.
the first one i posted in reply to bhartiji. stopping it will kill the healthy discussion, because it will become meaningless by the time it will be released.
or may be the famous ghantasalan going by the name of rafi fan 1 is right and we rafians dont know how to give proper name and e-mail address while posting.
maha devika,
i was inspired by your list. so i prepared lists based on the database in this site as well as stats available in another website ‘earthmusic.net’ which is a very good source of hindi songs’ stats. as you are so hardworking, you can also follow this pattern. i have an advantage in that i belong to that period when these songs ranted the air, so i can easily pick which were hits and which were not. in fact i can list more good songs of kk than his fans, but why should i do that. they keep circling around 10-20 rather ordinary songs of kk.
what i wanted to highlight was that kk – even for his whole career – could not hope to match even these 60 songs of rafi listed for 1970, the year in which they claim rafi was finished.
here is the link for you as well as for other rafians who are interested. there are duplications and errors in the list, which you will learn to discard by experience.

this ‘shagoon’ contained as per me the best music composed by khaiyyam. but unfortunately the film flopped and khaiyyam remained where he was i.e. right at the bottom.
see for yourself. two of the best solos of suman kalyanpur
zindagi zulm sahi, zabar sahi gham hi sahi
bujha diye hain khud apne hathon muhabbaton ke diye jala ke
a song by jagjit kaur which is her identity in hfm
tum apna ranjogham apni pareshani mujhe de do
a top class rafi-suman duet
parbaton ke pedo par sham ka basera hai
and another rafi gem

listen to all these songs and decide for yourself.
I have a doubt, and want to clarify with rafi fans, why all rafians decided to hang on this single thread, as if there are no written material on rafi sahab other than this. Moreover there is not much to discuss on this thread. All the posts represented can be classified as general discussion, which you can carry on other threads also. I request the stalwart rafi fans to concentrate on other threads which are more lovely and beautiful.
Just think over it and please do respond, give your comments to other threads as well that will be more appreciable.
Thanks
Zaheen Danish
not understood “why” comments written previously goes in to “under moderation” mode and which are later are duly published.
either there is a technical fault or the person responsible is doing a “shoddy” job.
my comment posted post 3234 – today 9/9/ at 8.04 am is held up where as post no 3235 at 10.16 am is published.
i agree with mahadevika, what was so good in songs like ‘merey sapnon ki raani, kub aye gee tu’, or ‘mazilen apni jagah hen’, only the tunes was good & credit goes to the md’s, had rafi sahib sung these songs, he would have bettered them by 50%, atleast. as rafi voice was naturally melodious, and sweet and he could convey pathos in the best possible way
A bit of info about “Saat surong Ka raja – mohd rafi saaheb….
a journo writes : it does’nt happen every time that a singer’s songs dominate “radio waves” 31 years after his passing away. Mohd rafi songs dominate in various radio programmes and radio stations.
marketing executives are now using rafi song for the ad. campaigns – as well.
==================================================
yesterday, i had a chance to meeet sonu nigam at the shanmukhananda hall – doing a rehearsal in the massive hall – just prior to his musical renderings. after hearing just three new songs of sonu – i left the place as the songs refused to register in our senses.
many from the organisers too felt the same. they are old songs lovers. One of them remarked : if sonu sang some rafi numbers then it will be good.
after a few months even sonu will not remember these songs . but, these songs and singing gives him handsome returns.
for an evening of his forgetful songs full of rock music and all – the reported budget runs to around 20 lacs.
good for sonu.
but, why i remember sonu nigam and appreciate him is for his love of mohd rafi. said sonu : during the eighties : the name of mohd rafi name was ‘taboo’ in the recording studios after 1980. this statement can be found in the archives of this site.
who were the people behind the scenes who wanted to keeep mohd rafi name out ?? did they succeed??? these questions have beeen in my mind from my school days “when” mohd rafi songs were shunted out on radio stations.
and after thirty one years we see the following trend :
first ten years post 1980 – mohd rafis songs were less heard.
next ten years post 1990 – rafi songs began emerging again.
by 2000 the songs “were” all back and the audiences began visiting
live rafi show in great numbers.
by 2010 – the circle is completed.
radio stations and music organisers and the listening public – cannot “do” without mohd rafi songs.
the vested interests of the eighties is disappearing it seems.
lata mangeshar says : mohd rafi is ‘divine’. i miss him when i hear my songs with him.

thanks for adding to the list, i only included few famous songs of each year to show that rafi sahab had more popular numbers than kishore kumar, proving the fabricated ‘myth’ propagated by his fans that the 70’s era belonged to him.
i have made a humble effort to prove them wrong.
look at these songs, they were far better songs both technically & melody-wise.
hansji, keep on educating us with the enormous wisdom that you have got for the first love of my life, mr mohd rafi.

now see the above list and add 4 from maha devika’s list (nafrat ki duniya is from 1971) you get 60 songs from 1970 alone. this is a partial list of 1970 and i have excluded some semi-hits from the list which is available with me. i will add to that list when i get the remaining songs from 1970.
even looking at this list can kk compete with this list for the whole of 70s. hits of rafi from 1971 to 1980 are pending and i will be posting them from time to time.
Thank you very much Hansji.
I will definitely try in accordance to your tips.

what a good selection, you have a good music taste indeed

bhagchandaniji and bhushanji have not understood your point. i faced this problem till some time back so i know what you want. such things are faced by those who are not computer-buffs, so there is nothing to be ashamed in asking.
when you search for a song and get various search results and normally press the left click to play the song. what you have to do to copy the link is press the right click instead of the left click and you will get some options to choose from. choose the option which says copy link location/address or any other which means the same thing depending on the operating system you are using. then go in the window where you are writing message for this site and again press right click and choose ‘paste’ from various options.
another procedure is to copy the address from the address bar of your browser when the song you want to send link is playing. then paste in the message box of this site.
i hope this will work.
I am thankful to moderator, as each and every post of mine in past 4 years or so has been published here. I think proper name and e-mail address should be correctly given for comments to appear – dear rafians.

The irony is rafi fans even cannot identify for which rafi is special and for which he was not special. The biggest false propoganda circulated by rafians is that rafi is best in all genres, which is the greatest ever lie in the universe. Excepting for few songs that too slow type and in the medium speed level, rafi does not create much ice for a music lover, of course excepting hardcore rafi fans who think otherwise. And most of rafi songs are composed in that slow and medium type, where he was comfortable and no special compositions or difficult compositions with remarkable varieties can be noted for rafi. the songs which rafi had rendered can be comfortably rendered by manna dey, kishore, talat and others, There is nothing great in rafi songs, since rafi has sung them, people are habituated to them and if the same songs would have been sung by other singers, people too would have been habituated to them.
Mr. Hans and Binu Nair – One Mr. Shankar Narain swami posted continuous derogatory posts which were published in succession and use of language which was totally condemnable in that – you people were just watching and did not raise your voice at that time. Decent posts and languages are escaping.
Sorry, read it as – “you will get the link if it exists” – Musharaff ji
Musharaff ji,
Type the name of a song (initial two to three words) in “google” mentioned you tube – you will get the link it that exists – that is just simple.
Mr. Hans and Binu Nair
similarly, all derogatory comments (in language which deserved utter condemnation) of one Mr. shankar narain swami were posted in succession in disguised names. Dignified comments were kept under moderation. You people did not raise your voice at that time and were watching.
Mr. Hans and Mr. Binu Nair
You are under the impression that gs/kk fans are all posted. That is purely incorrect. For your information, even one of my posts has not come here, hope you are clear now. There might be some set standards for the moderator to post them – be it from a rafian or others, as this is a public forum.
Dear Bhagchandani and Hansji,
Thank you very much for your kind co-operation. As a matter of fact I already know how to find a song in you tube. But what is the technique to find out the link to a particular song? Hansji has provided the following link to the song “Taqdeer ka fasana” that I have copied and pasted from the post 3217.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V17uJqdFZTQ&feature=related. But how did he find it out?
Bhagchandaniji also provided the link to “Aye husn zara jaag”. I just want to learn the technique so that I can also find out similar links to the songs that I feel to bring to the attention to our distinguished music lovers.
I hope I am not taxing on your patience and will excuse me for my ignorance.
Regards.
i know of few rafi saheb fans “leaving” this site as there was “over Moderation” or else “no” moderation at all.
Pradip ji knows about it.
the easiest way is to have “no Moderation” for regular contributors and full moderation for mohd rafi baiters.
is there anyone listening? please…..

from what i perceive the posts of rafians are only being moderated.
recently ani cherian has stopped posting after protesting against his posts being regularly held up for moderation. musharrafji complained against his six posts being held up for a long time and i dont think they ever appeared. maha devika is complaining of the same thing.
i posted three on kk and initially they all were held up, then one was released after two-three days and two were held up for more than a week. in between my simple posts in which links of songs were given. they were also held up. a post with two links was held up and a post with 9 links, which were in reply to your post where you had posted a rafi-lata duet was also held up. in the meantime i tried to repost the kk posts, one was published but the other was held up as i had posted within a short time of the second. when so many of my posts were held up i referred to that to moderator and it was then that all were released.
even now one of my posts is held up though it was posted after 9 minutes of the previous one.
you must be remembering that some time back i exposed the fact that gs/kk fans posted in conjunction. in that sequence there were 3-4 instances where the same person posted within two minutes, but they were not stopped.
it appears that the effort is on to de-popularise this site and to take it in a dead state like the kk site. and we can do nothing except sit like impotent men, because the person moderating is invisible and unapproachable like god.
what a sorry state of affairs.
Moderator Ji : I very strongly feel that “Comments” of mohd rafi lovers ought to be published right away without any moderation or whatsoever.
articles/comments which are “derogatory” must surely be moderated.
what i now feel is that the person u have appointed to post and moderate has been doing a shoddy job. the bigger crime is that “he” is not even reading the comments and putting it on hold.
if this is the case it’s unfortunate since rafi lovers are putting so much of their time – only for the love of mohd rafi sahib.
I hope mohd rafi lovers will have “no” cause to complain and you will set things right by publishing popular sentiments and comments without any delays.

Finding a song on you tube is not that difficult. Just go to the home page of You tube http://www.youtube.com/ and then type few words of the mukhra of the song in the address bar of the site (important: do not type in the address bar of main internet address bar, type in the address bar of the you tube site appearing at top on the right of You tube emblem), then click ‘search’. You will get one or more results of that song. Then just click any one option of the song. The song will start playing. If the internet speed is slow then the song will get struck intermittently. In that case take your curser at the bottom bar of you tube screen area (where the song duration is displayed, in that line you will find two small vertical bars, press that, it the pause option. On pressing the two vertical bars, in its place a triangle will appear (meaning pause). After doing this, wait for 1-2 minutes for song to download completely, then press that triangle again (meaning releasing the pause and playing the song). This will play the song without interruptions. At this time, what is appearing in the main address bar of your internet is the link of that song which you can copy/ paste and send to anyone.
Another point: Sometimes the songs are uploaded on you tube with starting words which is not mukhra of the song. Like someone has uploaded with the heading : ‘A Rare Bhajan by Mohd. Rafi’ This song will not be displayed even if you type the first few words of that bhajan. Such songs are discovered… ‘by the way’ on you tube. Typing some key words in the address bar of you tube (for example Non-filmi songs of Rafi saab’ or Raai-Lata duets (instead of typing the mukhra) gives wider results. It is a matter of exploring.
Have I gone too much in detail? May be you know most of it. I got carried away. But anyway wishing you ‘Happy you-tubing’ You can start with a Rafi’s non-filmi gem ‘Mere liye to bas wahi pal hain hanseen bahar ke…’

Bhagchandaniji(post 3201),
Thanks for yet another cute non-filmy song of Rafi Sahab. Actually there are many non-filmy gems of Rafi Sahab which are lying as undiscovered treasure. I really appreciate your attempt to bring them to the notice of the music lovers.
I know P. Halderda pretty well. He too hails from Bengal like me.
Bhagchandaniji, can you give me some tips as to how to find out links from you tube(If it is not too much technical or difficult to elaborate)? I can go to you tube, listen to the song but I can not find the link that I can provide others.
I will highly appreciate if you could take the trouble of providing the link to one of the very beautiful sad of Rafi that I frequently listen in you tube. The song is from the film “Sehra”. The beginning is “Taqdeer ka fasana, jakar kise sunayen, is dil mein jal rahe hain armanon ki chitayen”.
Thanks and regards.
Musharraf.

great news P.Haldar sahab
Friends,
Mr. Shahid Rafi is wrting a biography of Rafi saab, along with Sujata Dev. Mr. Sirish Kulkarni, who used to frequent this forum before (I don’t see him nowadays), is providing valuable inputs for the book.
Thanks Mt. Binu nair sahib,
for telling us about the books about rafi sahab. it is so strange that why rafi sahab has not been interviewed frequently in an era where there were lot of tv channels & other forms of media available.
why was not rafi sahab’s life not revealed to the world.
i sincerely want to know everything about his life, his personal life, how music directors and rafi colleagues would feel while listening to this greatest singer of hindustani cinema. what did mukesh say about him. lata was obviously jealous of the utmost talent rafi sahab possesed and the love and popularity he used to enjoy.
binu nair ji!

I feel enormously honored when most respected, honorable & well-educated populaces, such as you take notice of my meager remarks. I feel even minor in front of intellectuals & specialists of rafiology like you, hansji & j.k. bhagchandani ji.
In my modest view, if you pay attention to the track ‘khilona jaan kur tumto mera dil tod jate ho’, rafi sahab has very wisely shaped his voice to sound as if the lead of the movie is humming after crying for some time, there is a distinct nasal tone presented by rafiji here. (We all know that after crying, there is usually a nasal basal tone in the voice when one talks).
Such was the virtuoso & brilliance of rafi sahib, a feature not branded to any other singer.
Lot of regards, sir,
Most affectionately,

It is yours,

J.K. Bhagchandani ji!

You have provided the linkage to yet another of the most mellow ghazal of mohd rafiji.
What a marvelous tune your kindself have picked.
You have enquired my response. Sir! Who am I to remark in front of such scholarly folks alike you, hansji, binu nairji, musharafji and ram krishna bhartiji.
Anyways, i will try to very modestly add a small number of lines vis-à-vis my impression about this particular song:
Once again rafiji has demonstrated that how versatile is Muhammad Rafi.
The word “SHAAM” articulated BY RAFI SAHAB IS Pretty distinctive here; i have never heard this sort of recitation of this word before in any of his songs.
This is where rafi sahab is distinct, leaving behind all other singers way back. Such a meek looking singer is such an intellect & packed with wisdom to render such a great variations in his songs. I am certain of the fact & this is my strong conviction that rafi sahab sings ghazals better than any other singer, even better than the ghazal singers. I think no vocal sound on the soil can ever be more fragrant than rafi’s. Look, how untainted, how sugary, how melodic is his voice.
If i am queried to define this celestial voice in one word, i would say just “”flawless””.
His voice is very pure, crystal clear, vivacious, velvety & at all times soothing to the ears, calming to the soul and enters your emotions direct, stirring the deepest cords of one’s heart & ambiance.
There is no other vocalist in india whose voice keeps its melody and mellifluousness at the uppermost notes, it even sounds more honeyed the higher the sound-pitch goes.
As regards pathos, i do not think that even lata, mukesh, or for instance talat mehmmod could express the inmost grieves of the character than rafi sahab would do.
One added thing i want to share for the interest of the readers; and that is, my eldest brother is a fan of mukesh, my elder bother likes kishore kumar,, while my father loves rafi and talat mehmood, but in the course of arguments, I regularly triumph in the discussion. My eldest brother always says that everybody listens to rafi songs, but only sophisticated people pay attention to mukesh. I retortby saying that yu have self-confessed that rafi is adored and liked by masses and this is the evidence that he is in fact the paramount songster of hindustan.
with loads of regards,

bharatiji -3177,
i am sure many others would also like this qawwali. rafi sang a lot of qawwalis which were really gems, most top class qawwalis were penned by sahir. but, nowadays we hear only about ‘parda hai parda’, which is nothing when we see the old qawwalis.
here is one from film pyar ka bandhan picturised in very different style on two comedians johny walker and dhumal. ‘sambhalkar ishq farmana’ was sung by rafi and balbir. this film also contained the rafi gem ‘ghoda pishori mera’ picturised on raaj kumar in a role of tangewala. also watch this, which is also on youtube.

even we the oldtimers are nothing as compared to many who are busy 24 hours in searching for rarest of rare gems and uploading them on youtube for us people. people like me and binuji have the benefit of watching these gems of songs in cinema halls which brings back the nostalgia. we know about many great gems of rafi which are less remembered because of out first-hand experience. but you have on the other hand the advantage of you-tube where music lovers upload the rarest of songs and videos.
i was listing songs for the other thread of rafi’s pathos laden songs, and i put the songs which are less talked about for rafi lovers. when you listen to them you will certainly discover some related songs. now gs and kk work has almost finished, so i would continue to post songs which i think are great.
here is one more song from punar milan picturised on jagdeep, who initially appeared as hero. song is ‘paas baitho tabiyat bahal jayegi’.

Musharraf ji (Post 3189):
The Pankaj Mullick resemblance Rafi saab’s of rendering of words ‘….. payal ki jhankar liye…’ (in the song ‘Tum aao rumjhum kari payal ki jhankar liye.’) was pointed out by Mr. P. Haldar in one of the trails on this forum. Mr. P. Haldar is another great Rafian… his posts always crisp and enjoyable.
Meanwhile sending you the link of another non-filmi gem of Rafi saab…. ‘Shaam ke Deepak jale…’… enjoy
